Lawsuit seeks payback for asbestos exposure at Jackson County Courthouse

Jackson County CourthouseKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lawyers are seeking what could be millions of dollars in damages for people who worked at the Jackson County Courthouse during an asbestos removal project in the early 1980s.

Attorney Lou Accurso says the employees should receive free medical testing for the rest of their lives. He filed the lawsuit for two former employees but is seeking class action status.

The family of a woman who died in 2010 from asbestos-related illnesses received $10.4 million from the county and the firm that did the removal, U.S. Engineering Co.

The Missouri Court of Appeals reinstated the case this month after a lower court denied it class-action status.

The county and U.S. Engineering contend there’s no proof toxic levels of asbestos were found in the courthouse.

Death date set for Missouri man who plotted with hit man to kill his ex-wife

Kimber Edwards

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Supreme Court has scheduled a May 12 execution for a former St. Louis jailer convicted of hiring someone to kill his ex-wife in 2000.  The state’s high court set the execution date Thursday for Kimber Edwards, who turns 51 on Sunday.

Thirty-five year-old Kimberly Cantrell was shot and killed in August 2000 in her apartment in University City near St. Louis.  The man Edwards was convicted of hiring, Orthell Wilson, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

Prosecutors said Edwards wanted Cantrell dead to relieve him of paying overdue child support.

Edwards insisted at trial he had been framed and had no motive to harm his ex-wife because the former couple had worked out a deal to make up the child support.

PHOENIX (AP) — Junior Seau, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Charles Haley and Will Shields, of the Kansas City Chiefs, have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The class of 2015 also includes a pair of contributors, Bill Polian and Ron Wolf, along with senior selection Mick Tingelhoff.

The announcement was made Saturday night.

Shields was a picture of consistency.  A  12 time Pro Bowler with the Chiefs from 1993 to 2006. The Kansas City offensive lines that paved the way for Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson in the early 2000s were dominant with Shields leading the way as a highly athletic pulling guard.

Five nominees were eliminated in the final vote: Tony Dungy, Kevin Greene, Marvin Harrison, Orlando Pace and Kurt Warner.

Earlier Saturday, the selection committee reduced the list of 15 modern-day finalists by cutting Morten Andersen, Terrell Davis, John Lynch and coaches Don Coryell and Jimmy Johnson.

The induction ceremony is in August at Canton, Ohio.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Add one big-name supporter to the list of those who want to keep pro football in St. Louis: Baseball Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr.

DeWitt told KSDK-TV that professional football is not only good for St. Louis, it’s good for the Cardinals. He says he has no involvement in the effort to keep the Rams, but he’s following it closely.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke is part of a group planning a new stadium in Los Angeles, spurring speculation that the Rams could move as early as 2016. To keep a team in St. Louis, a proposal was unveiled earlier this month for a new stadium that would sit along the Mississippi River, just north of the Gateway Arch.

Former Rams offensive coordinator, Chiefs assistant moving to SEC

St. Louis RamsATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Former St. Louis Rams and New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is moving back to the college ranks to direct Georgia’s offense.

Georgia coach Mark Richt announced Wednesday that Schottenheimer also will coach the Bulldogs’ quarterbacks.

The 41-year-old Schottenheimer was the Rams’ offensive coordinator the past three seasons after heading the Jets’ offense from 2006-11. He previously served as quarterbacks coach for the San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins.

Before moving to the NFL, Schottenheimer was an assistant coach with Southern Cal and Syracuse. He coached for his father, Marty Schottenheimer, with the Redskins and Chiefs.

Richt says Schottenheimer’s NFL experience will be a “perfect fit” for Georgia’s pro-style offense.

Schottenheimer replaces Mike Bobo, who last month was hired as the Colorado State coach.

First bill in GOP-led Senate will address Keystone

DINA CAPPIELLO, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-controlled Senate’s first piece of legislation will seek to approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline, testing President Barack Obama on a project he’s been increasingly critical about, saying it wouldn’t have a huge benefit for U.S. consumers.

The bipartisan legislation, which is sponsored by 54 Republicans and six Democrats, was expected to be introduced later Tuesday.

Supporters said they had 63 votes in favor of the bill, enough to overcome a filibuster but not a presidential veto. The House is expected to vote and pass a bill approving the pipeline Friday.

The bill is identical to one that fell a single vote shy of passage in November, when Democrats controlled the Senate and Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana pushed for a vote to save her Senate seat. She lost.
