KCPD: Mayor Got No Special Treatment

Sly JamesKansas City police say Mayor Sly James didn’t get special treatment when retrieving his son’s car from the city tow lot without paying a $200 fee.

Because the car had expired tags and damage, an officer thought it was abandoned. It was towed April 25 from in front of the mayor’s house and impounded with an outstanding warrant and expired tags.

But after James relayed that Kyle’s warrants had recently been taken care of, a supervisor ordered the car to be released with no fee.

It turns out the car did have one remaining warrant for parking at an expired meter. It apparently had been overlooked.

Topeka DA To Discuss Police Shootings

Shawnee County Sheriff logoAuthorities have scheduled a news conference to discuss the killings of two Topeka police officers.

Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor plans to discuss the Dec. 16 deaths of Cpl. David Gogian and officer Jeff Atherly. The two were shot to death while checking possible drug activity outside a Topeka supermarket.

Their killer, 22-year-old David Tiscareno, was shot and killed by law enforcement officers during the altercation December 17.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office investigated the shooting because Atherly and Gogian were police officers. A third officer in the grocery store parking lot fired shots at the officers’ shooter.

Missouri Senate Passes Abortion Drug Restrictions

Missouri Senate chamberThe Missouri Senate has passed a bill that would require a doctor to be physically present when an abortion-inducing drug is first administered.

The legislation was passed with a 23-7 vote on Monday. It now heads back to the House.

Senate Democrats opposed the measure but allowed it to come to a vote after reaching a compromise.

An amendment was adopted to remove a provision that would’ve required the patient to see the same doctor a few weeks after receiving the drug.

Supporters say the measure protects the health of a mother, but opponents say it restricts abortions, particularly in rural areas where doctors are not always readily available.

Two Questioned After Bodies Found Near Ottawa

Franklin County Sheriff patchAuthorities in Franklin County, Kansas are investigating the deaths of three people whose bodies were found on a farm near Ottawa Monday. Two persons of interest are being questioned.

The bodies of two adult men and one woman were found Monday on the farm west of Ottawa, which is located about 60 miles southwest of Kansas City.

The deaths are being investigated as homicides.

Sheriff Jeff Richards declined to release other details , including the victims’ identities or how they were killed.

Friends of a resident of the farm said they went to the farm Sunday and called police after smelling a foul odor. They said police looked over the home and area and attributed the bad smell to garbage.

Police returned to the farm Monday and found the bodies.

Olathe police are waiting to learn whether one of the three bodies is that of a young mother reported missing along with her daughter. Sgt. Brad Caldwell said Tuesday that 21-year-old Kaylie Bailey and her 1 ½-year-old daughter, Lana Bailey, were last seen Wednesday. They were reported missing Friday.

Caldwell says Olathe police have sent detectives to the Franklin County crime scene because of the open missing person case.

Caldwell says the case of the missing girl doesn’t meet the criteria for an Amber Alert.

Owner Of Smelly Landfill Offers To Pay For Temporary Housing

smelly landfillA company is offering to pay for temporary housing for people living near a St. Louis-area landfill that is causing quite a stink.

Republic Services of Phoenix, which owns the Bridgeton landfill, is offering to pay for lodging for 270 households from May 20 to June 14. The lodging would be at an extended stay hotel that takes pets. Residents who decide to stay with someone else will be paid $125 per week.

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster has sued Republic Services on eight charges of violating state environmental laws.

Residents near the landfill have complained for years about the smell. Republic Services said in a letter to the residents Tuesday that upcoming work to remove concrete pipes at the landfill is expected to temporarily make the smell worse.

NE Kansas Raid Nets Nearly A Dozen Exotic Animals

jack Laurie Atch cty sheriff badgeA northeast Kansas man is in custody after a menagerie of wild cats was seized from private property in northeast Kansas.

Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says one tiger, two cougars, three bobcats, two lynxes, one serval and two skunks were taken Sunday from land belonging to a relative of the suspect. Laurie says the animals were living in inadequate enclosures and were infrequently fed.

Staff with the Humane Society of the United States and the Kansas City Zoo helped sedate and move the animals. They’ve been taken to animal sanctuaries in Texas, Florida and Kansas.

Laurie says the owner became combative during the seizure and was found to be in possession of methamphetamine. He was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges, including interference with law enforcement and disorderly conduct.

Bodies Found In Rural Ottawa Barn

Franklin County Sheriff patchAuthorities say they are investigating the deaths of two people whose bodies were found in a barn in east-central Kansas as homicides.

Franklin County authorities say the bodies were found Monday afternoon in a barn near Ottawa.

Sheriff Jeff Richards says the deaths appear to be homicides. He declined to release other details, including the genders of the victims or how they were killed.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department is helping with the investigation.

Man Critical Suffers Critical Hammer Injuries In Fight Over Lighter

lighterA dispute over a cigarette lighter is blamed for a brutal attack in St. Louis.

Two men began fighting Wednesday evening after arguing over the lighter. Police say the 54-year-old suspect retrieved a hammer and began beating the 55-year-old victim over the head, then left the man in the middle of the street.

Neighbors found him with a severe head injury and called police.

Officers found the suspect several blocks away and took him into custody. Formal charges have not been filed.

The victim is hospitalized in critical condition.

Woman Pleads No Contest To Abandoning Baby Son

Elizabeth MichaudA 28-year-old Leavenworth woman who left her baby alone in an alley pleaded no contest to endangering a child and drug charges.

Prosecutors say Elizabeth A. Michaud entered the pleas Wednesday to aggravated endangering a child and two drug charges arising from other cases.

Michaud’s 7-week-old son was left sitting alone in a stroller in May 2012.

Officers who responded to a report of a missing child found Michaud crying and saying she needed to find her baby. She wasn’t able to provide any information while officers searched for the baby.

Another woman found the baby about three hours after he was reported missing.

She will be sentenced May 31.

Snow Shuts Down I-70 In Western Kansas

KDOT road camSnow and strong winds combined to close Interstate 70 in western Kansas from Goodland to Burlington, Colo., overnight.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says driving conditions combined with road construction projects caused slide-offs and some accidents Wednesday evening.

Other roads in northwest Kansas were snowpacked and icy by Thursday morning.

Snowfall totals recorded by early Thursday were between 1-3 inches.

The National Weather Service says the storm system is expected to move east across Kansas through Thursday bringing light snow or cold rain to much of the state.
