Kansas Statute Of Limitations Expanded For Sex Crimes

kansas flag
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback on Monday signed into law a bill that changes the statute of limitations for prosecuting rape cases.

Kansas is among 10 states that required rape cases to be prosecuted within five years.

The new law also allows for prosecution of a sexually violent crime within 10 years if the victim is at least 18 years old. For younger victims, prosecution would begin within one year of the date the suspect is identified through DNA testing, or within 10 years of the victim’s 18th birthday, whichever is later.

Rape victims say the change in the law helps them with their healing after the crime.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt issued the following statement on Governor Brownback’s signing of House Bill 2252:

“As technology has improved in areas such as DNA evidence, our ability to successfully prosecute perpetrators has increased. This new law will allow prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to bring these cases forward whenever sufficient evidence is available without an artificial time limit.”

Aerial Delivery For Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Egg DropPeter Cottontail has made a special aerial delivery to a southwest Missouri church.

The bunny flew Saturday in a helicopter to King’s Way United Methodist Church in Springfield.

He then dropped thousands of eggs on a field that soon would be filled with children.

Besides the egg drop, there were games like bowling and a petting zoo.

Church spokeswoman Katherine Botts says the egg drop has been happening for several years and was sparked as an idea by the pastor. The helicopter flew from Branson to the church. It then made several passes and hovered off the ground as the eggs were dropped.

SW Missouri Ranchers Rediscover Cattle Branding After Theft Of 200 Head

MU extensionHundreds of cattle owners in southwest Missouri turned up for a recent demonstration on cattle branding, which officials say may help deal with the recent upsurge in cattle thefts.

Lawrence County Sheriff Brad DeLay says a spate of cattle thefts across southwest Missouri in recent weeks has subsided. But officials estimate that up to 200 head of cattle have been stolen in the past two years in southwest Missouri, creating a potential loss of $200,000.

The most recent theft was reported about a month ago in Greene County.

The demonstration was staged by the University of Missouri Extension office in Lawrence County, the Southwest Missouri Cattlemen’s Association and area sheriffs’ departments because branding remains a good way to identify the ownership of cattle.

Missouri has confirmed four new cases of chronic wasting disease in deer in a north-central part of the state.

The state Conservation Department said Tuesday the four free-ranging deer were among about 100 deer killed in January and February in the 29-square-mile chronic wasting disease core area in Linn and Macon counties.

The fire chief in the eastern Missouri town of Potosi is hospitalized in serious condition after the tanker truck he was driving overturned on the way to a fire call.

The accident happened Monday afternoon, injuring 51-year-old Richard Knight.

He was driving the tanker on Route 47 when it veered off the roadway and flipped, partially ejecting the chief.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says it isn’t clear if icy conditions played a role in the accident. Troopers say the shifting weight of water in the tank may have been a contributing factor.

Delaware Tribe Considers Move To Kansas

Delaware Tribe logoThe Delaware Tribe of Indians is considering moving the tribe’s headquarters from Oklahoma to Kansas.

Dee Ketchum, a former chief of the tribe, says it is looking for property in Kansas, focusing on Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties. He met with Leavenworth city officials last week.

Ketchum says the tribe is not looking for land for a new reservation. It could use the new headquarters for several things, such as health care, housing and child care.

The Leavenworth Times reports Ketchum acknowledged that gaming could be part of an economic development effort.

He says the move is being considered because of restrictions the Delaware Tribe faces at its current location, which is in the jurisdiction of another tribe.

The Delaware Tribe of Indians has about 10,500 members.
