High Speed Chase With Toddler In Car Lands Missouri Man In Jail

Grandview PDA 23-year-old Missouri man is in jail after police say he led officers on a chase while his 2-year-old child was unrestrained in the car.

Grandview police say the chase early Sunday sometimes reached 100 mph before officers stopped following the car.

Eventually, the car was abandoned and police found the 2-year-old boy in the back seat, not in his car seat.

Kansas City and Grandview police searched the area where the car was abandoned and found the man hiding in a creek in waist-deep water.

The man was taken to a hospital for hypothermia.

Police say he appeared to be under the influence of drugs.  He faces possible charges of child endangerment.  The boy was placed in state custody.

Keystone Pipeline Expansion Could Be Delayed Again, By Power Line Construction Delays

New Keystone RouteA Nebraska utility says the new route for the Keystone Pipeline expansion through the state will delay work on electric transmission lines for the pipeline.

Nebraska Public Power District officials say they won’t be able to build the transmission lines by the deadline TransCanada set for the end of 2014.

NPPD Chief Operating Officer Tom Kent says there’s no way the transmission lines will be ready by 2015.

TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline expansion will double its capacity from Alberta to the Texas coast if the Obama Administration gives the project final approval.  That approval could be months off, according to recent statements from the State Department.

Winning The Lottery May Have Been The Worst Thing That Ever Happened To These Guys

WPDAuthorities say two brothers accidentally blew up their house after celebrating a $75,000 winning lottery ticket by purchasing marijuana and meth.

Wichita police Sergeant Bruce Watts says one of the brothers was taken to a hospital and the other to jail after Friday’s explosion.

The injured 27-year-old brother is in serious but stable condition with second-degree burns on his hands, arms and chest.

One of the brothers went to the kitchen to refuel the butane torches they planned to use to light their bongs, according to police.

The brother emptied a couple of large cans of butane lighter fluid, leaking butane into the air.

Eventually, butane vapor reached the pilot light in the furnace, causing the blast.

Missouri has recorded its first fishing record of the year.

The Department of Conservation says a southeastern Missouri man caught a record gizzard shad in the Black River last month.

Brian Taylor caught the fish by jigging. It measured 16 inches and weighed 1 pound, 14 ounces. That was 6 ounces heavier than the previous state record for gizzard shad in the alternative-methods category. The old mark was set in 2011.

Gizzard shad live in quiet waters of lakes, ponds, reservoirs and backwaters. They can be found at least occasionally in every major stream system and are most abundant in reservoirs and large rivers.

A Missouri man facing a third murder trial after judges overturned two earlier convictions has been freed from jail and says he’s overwhelmed.

Mark Woodworth walked out of the  jail at midday Friday and repeatedly said he was overwhelmed by the prospect of his new freedom.

He thanked his friends and relatives for their support, hours after a judge’s order releasing him on a $50,000 bond.

Woodworth has been serving a life sentence in the fatal shooting of Cathy Robertson, the wife of his father’s farming partner. His latest conviction was thrown out in January when the Missouri Supreme Court ruled state prosecutors had failed to share evidence with Woodworth that could have helped his defense.

Attorney General Chris Koster quickly announced he would try Woodworth again.

(Update) School District Changes Policy; Same Sex Couple Can Go To Prom

SPLC
A southern Missouri school district is ending a policy prohibiting same-sex couples from attending prom, a day after a national anti-discrimination group threatened to sue.

Scott County Central School District superintendent Alvin McFerren told The Associated Press Friday that the school board has agreed to revise a handbook policy that prohibits same-sex dates at school dances. McFerren says the policy was adopted 10-15 years ago because students were attending prom as couples simply to save money — the couples price was cheaper than the individual cost.

The Southern Poverty Law Center on Thursday threatened legal action on behalf of Stacy Dawson, a male student who wanted to attend prom with his boyfriend. McFerren says Dawson can attend the dance on April 20 with whomever he chooses.

Napping On The Job Could Forfeit Unemployment Benefits

Missouri State Seal2People fired for sleeping on the job and missing work could have a harder time getting unemployment benefits under a bill endorsed by the Missouri Senate.

The Senate gave initial approval Wednesday to a measure expanding the definition of “misconduct” in the workplace.

The change would make it harder for people to qualify for unemployment insurance after they are fired.

Supporters say the bill will protect businesses from liability and give them more freedom to fire employees who misbehave at work.

The legislation is sponsored by Republican Senator Will Kraus of Lee’s Summit. It needs one more affirmative vote in the Senate before moving to the House.
