Kansas women upset Delaware to advance to Sweet 16

Elena Delle Donne and Delaware are done, ousted from the NCAA women’s tournament by Kansas.

Angel Goodrich scored 27 points to lead 11th-seeded Kansas past Delle Donne, the nation’s leading scorer, and the third-seeded Blue Hens with a 70-64 victory Tuesday night.

The Jayhawks (21-12) move to the second weekend of the tournament for the first time since 1998. They’ll face Tennessee on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.

They advanced by rallying in the second half behind Goodrich, who fell one short of her career high in scoring. The junior was 12 of 21 from the field, 3 of 6 on 3-pointers, and also added six assists.

Aishah Sutherland added 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Chelsea Gardner had 10 points for Kansas.

Delle Donne finished with 34 points for the Blue Hens (31-2), who had their 21-game winning streak snapped.

The standout junior, who had 39 points in an opening-round win over Arkansas-Little Rock, was harassed throughout by a swarming Kansas defense. She was double- and triple-teamed at times as the Jayhawks did their best to keep her from finding a comfort zone.

Delle Donne finished 9 of 18 from the field, 15 of 18 from the free throw line, and also had 10 rebounds.

Goodrich, meanwhile, had no such problems finding open space while running the point for Kansas.

The Jayhawks in the Sweet 16 seemed improbable when the team’s leading scorer Carolyn Davis went down for the season with a knee injury on Feb. 12.

Kansas lost six of eight to end the regular season and was anything but a certainty to make the tournament, but the Jayhawks have made the most of their stay so far.

Delaware led 37-31 at halftime, but Kansas took control early in second half behind Natalie Knight. The freshman, who scored only five points in the Jayhawks opening-round win over Nebraska, was scoreless at halftime before scoring eight points in a row at one point to put Kansas up 50-43.

That capped a 19-6 run to open the second half for the Jayhawks, and it was part of a 13-0 run that put them up 53-43 after a free throw by Gardner.

Delle Donne took control at that point with Delaware’s season on the line. She scored 12 straight points, the last three on free throws after she was fouled on a 3-point attempt, to pull the Blue Hens within 59-57.

They were never able to get closer, however, as Goodrich answered with nine of Kansas’ next 11 points. Her last during the stretch came after a steal and layup on the fast break to put the Jayhawks up 68-57 — their largest lead of the game.

Delaware was unable to get closer than six points after that.

Bourgeois, 30, played in a career-best 93 games for Houston last season, batting .294 (70-for-238) with eight doubles, two triples, one home run, 16 RBI and 30 runs scored.  The speedy and versatile outfielder also recorded 31 stolen bases in 37 attempts while playing all three outfield positions.  In his four-year big league career with the White Sox (2008), Brewers (2009) and Astros (2010-11), Bourgeois compiled a .262 average in 192 games with 46 steals in 56 attempts.  The right-handed hitter is a career .369 (61-for-186) batter against left-handed pitching.  Born and raised in Houston, Texas, he was originally a second-round selection of the Texas Rangers in 2000.

Chapman, 24, split the 2011 season between Wilmington (High A) and Northwest Arkansas (AA).  He was the club’s fourth-round selection in the 2010 Draft out of the University of Florida.

Jayhawks’ Robinson named NABC First Team All-America

Kansas junior forward Thomas Robinson has been named to the 2012 NABC Coaches’ Division I All-America First Team, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced Tuesday.

The ESPN.com National Player of the Year, Big 12 Player of the Year and Naismith and Wooden awards finalist, Robinson leads the nation with 25 double-doubles in 2011-12, which is tied for the Kansas single-season record set by Drew Gooden in 2002. The Washington, D.C., native, Robinson is the only player in the Big 12 to average a double-double with 17.7 points and 11.8 rebounds. A certain consensus All-American first-team selection and four-time Big 12 Player of the Week this season, Robinson’s 11.8 boards per game are second nationally.

Joining Robinson on the NABC All-America First Team were Anthony Davis (Kentucky), Draymond Green (Michigan State), Doug McDermott (Creighton) and Jared Sullinger (Ohio State). A complete list of the NABC All-America teams is located at www.nabc.com. The last Jayhawk to be named to the NABC All-America First Team was Sherron Collins in 2010.

Located in Kansas City, Mo., the NABC was founded in 1927 by Phog Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men’s basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today’s student-athletes. The four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education.

Missouri QB James Franklin to have shoulder surgery

University of Missouri junior quarterback James Franklin will undergo surgery to repair his injured right shoulder, and he will miss the remainder of spring camp, but is expected to be ready for the beginning of the 2012 season.

Franklin, who threw for 2,865 yards and 21 touchdowns and ran for 981 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2011 as a first-year starter, injured his shoulder last Tuesday in practice when he jumped on a fumble at the end of a play.  During the scramble, a defender landed on his outstretched arm, causing the shoulder injury, which was diagnosed as a sprained glenohumeral (GH) joint.

Initially, surgery was not included in the diagnosis, and it was hoped that Franklin would be able to return prior to the end of spring camp, which concludes April 14th with the annual Black & Gold Spring Game.  However, after further evaluation, it was decided that repairing the injury surgically would be in Franklin’s best interests long-term.

“We’re disappointed for James naturally,” said MU Head Coach Gary Pinkel.  “But this is absolutely the right thing to do, and we all know he’ll be in great hands, as we have the best doctors and trainers in the nation.  James has an outstanding work ethic, and he’ll be able to get past this setback just fine.  We expect him to be 100 percent and ready to go for the season.  Until then, our younger guys will benefit from more reps and more work with the number one offense, and we’ll look at that as a positive,” he said.

Franklin’s surgery will be performed this Friday and a timetable for his return to throwing will be determined following the procedure.

Mizzou’s Haith named USBWA National Coach of the Year

On the heels of a record-setting season which saw the University of Missouri men’s basketball team record one of the most successful years in school history, Mizzou Head Coach Frank Haith has been named the recipient of the 2011-12 Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award, presented annually to the National Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

With a roster featuring just seven scholarship players, Haith and his staff guided the Tigers to a 30-5 overall record, marking just the second 30-win season in MU history.  Mizzou, picked fourth in the Big 12 Conference pre-season coaches’ poll, won a school-record 14 Big 12 games, and finished second in the league standings with a 14-4 conference mark.  The Tigers won the school’s second Big 12 Tournament Championship with a 3-0 run in Kansas City, before seeing their season end last Friday in the NCAA Tournament.

“I am so unbelievably honored and humbled by this,” said Haith.  “The award might be in my name, but I look at it as a team award, because this belongs just as much to our kids and our staff as it does to me.  The year we had was special because it was touched along the way by so many people that made it possible, and that also includes our administration and our fans.  We have a lot to look forward to in the future at Mizzou, but I will always look back at this senior class and be grateful to them for their leadership and their character, which was such a key to our success,” he said.

Haith becomes the third Mizzou coach to win national honors, joining former coaches Norm Stewart and Mike Anderson in that group.  Stewart twice won national coach of the year honors (1982 [UPI] and 1994 [AP]), while Anderson won the same distinction by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 2009.

Haith will receive the Henry Iba Award at the USBWA’s College Basketball Awards Breakfast held in conjunction with the NCAA Final Four on Friday, March 30th at the New Orleans Marriott at 8 a.m.  The Henry Iba Award is named in honor of the legendary Oklahoma State coach who won 655 games and two national championships in 36 seasons in Stillwater.  The award is voted on by all members of the USBWA at the conclusion of the regular season.  The USBWA has presented a National Coach of the Year Award each year since the 1958-59 season.

Kansas junior Thomas Robinson has been named one of four finalists for the Naismith Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year presented by AT&T, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Monday.

The other three finalists for the award are Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis, Michigan State senior Draymond Green and Creighton sophomore Doug McDermott.

Other wireless carriers must opt‐in for their subscribers to participate. Standard messaging rates apply.

The finalists were voted on by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s National Voting Academy, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. The academy based its criteria on player performances this season. The vote was tabulated and certified by the accounting firm of Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, LLP. HA&W is the largest independent accounting firm in Georgia and one of the top 50 firms in the United States. The winner will be announced at the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Guardians of the Game award program April 1 during the Final Four in New Orleans.

“With the variety of talent these finalists have shown, we know this will be a close race,” said Jamie Kerr, Director, AT&T Corporate Sponsorships. “We at AT&T are looking forward to the results as college basketball fans vote for their favorite finalist to be named this year’s Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year.”

Chiefs announce signings of Brady Quinn & Eric Winston

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Monday that the club has signed free agent quarterback Brady Quinn and tackle Eric Winston.

Quinn (6-3, 235) played in 14 games (12 starts) with the Cleveland Browns from 2007-09. Over his three seasons in Cleveland, Quinn completed 184 passes on 353 attempts (52.1%) for 1,902 yards, 10 TDs and nine INTs. He rushed 25 times for 119 yards (4.8 avg.) with a TD. Following the 2009 season, Quinn was traded to the Denver Broncos in a deal that sent newly-acquired Chiefs RB Peyton Hillis to Cleveland. Quinn served as a Broncos backup QB for the 2010-11 seasons.

The Columbus, Ohio, native originally entered the NFL as a first-round pick (22nd overall) of the Cleveland Browns in the 2007 NFL Draft. He completed 929 passes for 11,762 yards with 95 TDs and 39 INTs at the University of Notre Dame (2003-06).

“I had the opportunity to work with Brady in Cleveland and I can tell you he is a true professional,” said Head Coach Romeo Crennel. “He is a veteran player who knows how to study and prepare for game days and you can count on him to always go out there and give you his best, whether that be on the practice field or on Sundays.”

“Brady is another solid addition for our team,” said General Manager Scott Pioli. “In Brady, we have added another good football player who will increase competition and provide quality depth.”

Winston (6-7, 302) has played in 92 games (87 starts) in six seasons with the Houston Texans. In 2011, Winston was part of an offensive line that helped the Texans finish second in the NFL in rushing yards and paved the way for Houston’s first postseason appearance and win in franchise history. He originally entered the NFL as a third-round selection (66th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft. The Midland, Texas, native attended the University of Miami (Fla.).

“We are always looking for good football players, and when Eric became available, we decided to pursue him,” said Head Coach Romeo Crennel. “He is a big, strong, physical player up front that will be a good addition to our offensive line.”

“We are very happy to add a quality right tackle like Eric to our team,” said General Manager Scott Pioli. “He is a smart lineman who is going to bring passion, intelligence and toughness to our offense.”
