Pujols leads St. Louis past Florida in opener

For Albert Pujols, slumps tends to be brief.

The St. Louis Cardinals slugger snapped out of a three-game skid, hitting his 25th home run and finishing a triple shy of the cycle to help beat the Florida Marlins 7-4 on Thursday night.

“I just put a good swing on them,” he said. “Hopefully I can continue to do that the rest of the series.”

Pujols came into the game only 1 for 14 on the Cardinals’ trip. He walked and scored in the first inning, singled and scored in the third, homered in the fourth and doubled in the sixth. The first baseman also made a lunging backhanded stop to start a 3-6-3 double play.

“Watch him play defense and run the bases — he’s a great player,” manager Tony La Russa said.

The Cardinals’ David Freese suffered a mild concussion when he was hit in the helmet by a 3-2 pitch from Clay Hensley with the bases loaded in the third inning. The hard-earned RBI put the Cardinals ahead to stay, 4-3.

“It’s not how you would want one, but I’ll take it,” Freese said.

Freese said he was dizzy after the game but feeling better. He said he likely would miss at least one game but didn’t expect to be sidelined long.

Marlins second baseman Omar Infante broke his right middle finger diving for a grounder in the third.

Six St. Louis relievers limited Florida to one run after Kyle Lohse lasted only three innings — his shortest outing this season — even though his teammates gave him a 7-3 lead. He allowed seven hits and walked three and threw 74 pitches.

Florida had 14 hits, including five doubles, but stranded 12 runners and hit into two double plays.

The Marlins’ odd home-road disparity continued. They are 24-33 at home and 31-23 on the road.

Kyle McClellan (9-6) replaced Lohse and pitched three scoreless innings. Lance Lynn struck out the side in the seventh.

Fernando Salas came on to retire Gaby Sanchez on a flyout with the bases loaded to end the eighth, then pitched a perfect ninth for his 20th save in 23 chances.

Matt Holliday hit his 17th home run for St. Louis, while Skip Schumaker had three hits, including a two-run double.

August has historically been Pujols’ best month, and a 3-for-4 night hiked his average to .280. He batted in the eighth needing a triple to complete the cycle and lined out to right field.

“Albert gets pitched tough all the time, and he’s just amazing,” La Russa said.

Clay Hensley (1-4), making his fourth start since joining the rotation from the bullpen, lasted 2 1/3 innings and allowed six runs. His ERA rose from 3.09 to 4.46.

After coming out of the game, Hensley phoned Freese and apologized.

“I didn’t have any idea where the ball was going. Hands down, the worst I’ve ever pitched in my entire career,” Hensley said. “It’s frustrating, because the lack of control that I had tonight could have seriously hurt somebody.”

In the first inning, Hensley walked consecutive batters before Holliday homered.

“We can’t give guys free passes — three or four walks and a couple hit batsmen,” Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. “They’ve got guys like Pujols, (Lance) Berkman and Holliday. We can’t put guys on in front of those guys and expect not to get burned.”

Florida pulled even with four hits in the bottom of the first, including an RBI double by Infante and a two-run double by Logan Morrison.

Hensley hit Holliday and Freese with pitches in the third. The pitch to Freese was Hensley’s last, and Schumaker then hit a two-run double to put the Cardinals up 6-3.

Infante was hurt when Schumaker’s grounder deflected off his right hand before rolling into right field.

Kansas City resigns Carr and add Piscitelli

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday that CB Brandon Carr has signed his restricted free agent tender. The club also announced the signing of unrestricted free agent S Sabby Piscitelli (pronounced Pis-Ka-Tell-Ee).

Carr (6-0, 207) has started all 48 games in three seasons with Kansas City (2008-10). He has registered 207 tackles (175 solo), four interceptions for 98 yards, 47 passes defensed, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries. Carr also has four tackles (three solo) and one pass defensed in one postseason start. He was a fifth-round selection (140th overall) of Kansas City in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Carr won two NCAA Division II titles at Grand Valley State. He earned all-conference honors at Carman-Ainsworth High School in Flint, Mich.

Piscitelli (6-3, 224) has played in 50 games (20 starts) with Tampa Bay (2007-10) and Cleveland (2010). He has recorded 115 tackles (93 solo), five interceptions for 144 yards, 14 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and 18 special teams tackles. Piscitelli entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick (64th overall) of Tampa Bay in 2007.

Piscatelli finished his collegiate career at Oregon State with 178 tackles, a sack, 29 passes defensed and 15 interceptions. He earned all-state honors as a senior at Boca Raton High School in Boca Raton, Fla.

KU releases 2011-2012 basketball schedule; entire slate on national TV

Kansas’ men’s basketball regular season schedule is now complete with the release of Big 12 schedule and the release of the bracket for the EA Sports Maui Invitational, which were both announced Thursday. The season’s highlights include two games on CBS as well as 21 games on the ESPN family of networks, which include four Big Monday appearances and two ESPN Saturday primetime games.

The Jayhawks’ schedule will feature at least 11 games against teams that played in last year’s NCAA tournament, and at least 19 games against schools that were in the top-100 of last season’s RPI rankings.

“I believe this is the hardest schedule we have played since I’ve been here,” explained ninth year head coach Bill Self. “Our strength of schedule and RPI have been in the top 10 almost yearly, but this will be the hardest schedule not only because of Kentucky, the three games in Maui, South Florida, Ohio State, Long Beach State, Davidson and USC, but on top of that you play everyone in the Big 12 twice, which makes the league that much harder.”

November looks to be a challenging month for the Jayhawks. On Nov. 15 they will travel to New York for a contest against the Kentucky Wildcats in Madison Square Garden. Six days later the team will make the trip to Maui, Hawaii for what is sure to be an entertaining EA Sports Maui Invitational. Kansas will go up against the Georgetown Hoyas in the first game and could face the likes of UCLA, Duke, Memphis, Tennessee or Michigan in the later rounds.

“The Maui field is good every year but this year it’s exceptional,” said Self. “We play Georgetown. Their style is totally different. The rest of the field – with UCLA and Chaminade on our side and, with Duke, Tennessee, Michigan and Memphis – certainly makes for the best field any tournament will have this year.”

Besides the network and national cable telecasts, four KU games will air on the Big 12 Network, while three contests will be shown on the in-state Jayhawk Television Network (JTV). The Big 12 Network and JTV contests will be available nationally on ESPN’s Full Court package. Additionally, KU’s two exhibition contests will also air on JTV but will not be shown nationally.

Kansas TV Notables

·         For the sixth-straight season and 12th time in the 16-year history of the Big 12 conference, the Jayhawks will play in four ESPN Big Monday games. KU’s ESPN Big Monday contests will be Jan. 16 against Baylor, Jan. 23 against Texas A&M, Feb. 13 at Kansas State and Feb. 27 at Oklahoma State. Kansas is 41-16 all-time on Big Monday (23-1 at home, 18-15 on the road), including 22-8 under head coach Bill Self.

·         Kansas will make multiple regular season appearances on CBS for the 11th-straight year, dating back to the 2000-01 season. Under Self, the Jayhawks have appeared on CBS 45 times, amassing a 33-12 record (8-1 home, 7-5 away, 18-6 neutral).

·         The Jayhawks will appear on Fox Sports Net (FSN) for the fifth-consecutive season as a part of the Big 12/Pac 12 Challenge against USC on Dec. 22. KU is 3-1 in contests televised by FSN.

Other Kansas 2011-12 Schedule Notables

·         Kansas will play a total of 24 games against schools from BCS conferences – two from the Big East, one from the Big Ten, one from the SEC, one from the Pac 12, one yet to be determined in the Maui Classic and 18 from the Big 12.

·         Kansas will play four non-conference opponents that won their respective league titles in 2011 – Kentucky (SEC), Florida Atlantic (Sun Belt), Long Beach State (Big West) and Ohio State (Big Ten).

·         Two of the most storied programs in college basketball history will meet in one of the world’s most historic arenas on Nov. 15 when Kansas takes on the Kentucky Wildcats in Madison Square Garden as part of the Champions Classic. Kentucky leads the all-time series 19-6, however, the Jayhawks have claimed victories in the last three meetings. KU also boasts a 21-13 all-time record in New York.

·         The Jayhawks will play one of the toughest fields ever assembled at the 2011 Maui Classic. Duke, Georgetown, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee, UCLA and Kansas, all of which played in the NCAA tournament last season, will highlight the three day tournament set to take place in Hawaii Nov. 21-23.

·         When the Jayhawks face Davidson Dec. 19, it will be for the first time since the thrilling 2008 regional final victory that propelled KU to an eventual national championship. The rematch will be played in Kansas City’s Sprint Center, making this the fourth-consecutive season Kansas will host a game in the venue. KU has garnered a 13-2 record at the Sprint Center, including wins in the last eight contests.

·         Kansas is the only school in the Big 12 to have a winning series record against every conference team in men’s basketball.

·         The Big 12 is coming off another outstanding season in which it ranked No. 3 in the RPI rankings, had six teams with 23 or more victories and had five teams advance to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Kansas won the 2011 Big 12 regular-season championship with a 14-2 record.

·         Kansas and Texas, the two winningest programs in Big 12 history, will square off twice in the regular season for the first time ever. The Longhorns will host the first match-up at 3 p.m., Jan. 21 on CBS. The series will then move to Lawrence on the last day of the regular season (March 3) at 8 p.m. on ESPN. Kansas is first in the conference with a combined 232-46 record against Big 12 competition (regular-season and league tourney play), while Texas is next at 187-88. Kansas has won the last seven Big 12 regular-season titles, yet Texas tied KU for two of those in (2006 and 2008) and the two teams met in four of the last six Big 12 Championship title games, all won by the Jayhawks.

The 2011-12 Jayhawks will be a team filled with much youth but great potential as they welcome eight newcomers (six of which are freshmen) and return just one starter – Tyshawn Taylor – and eight additional letterwinners from last year’s 35-3 team that won the Big 12 regular-season title with a 14-2 record, the postseason Big 12 Championship and was a No. 1 seed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

“We know that this is going to be a young team, much like that team was the year after we won the national championship,” said Self. “We know we’re going to have to grow up fast but this should be a great way to force us to do so.”

Along with Taylor, another leading contributor returning from the 2010 campaign is junior forward Thomas Robinson, who was the Jayhawks leading scorer and rebounder off the bench last season. The Washington, D.C., native saw action in 33 games and averaged 14.6 mpg.

Kansas has won five of the last six Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships, including the 2011 title. This year’s event will be held at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., March 7-10 and NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday will be Sunday, March 11.

Mustangs blow 3-1 ninth inning lead and lose to Valley Center at NBC

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost for the first time at the NBC World Series in Wichita Wednesday night as they blew a 3-0 lead and lost in 10 innings to Valley Center (KS), 4-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team scored two runs in the first inning and added a run in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead, but Valley Center got one run back in the seventh before rallying in the ninth inning.

Adam Maddox started for the Mustangs and went seven innings before giving way to closer Doug Shields.  Shield allowed two base runners in the eighth, but struck out the side to keep the score 3-1.

Shields tried for the two-inning save, but he allowed three hits and a walk as the Diamond Dawgs tied the game and forced extra innings.  Jordan Guida threw out a runner at the plate for the third out in the inning for Valley Center would’ve taken the lead.

St. Joseph only managed six hits the entire night and didn’t get a base hit after the sixth inning.  Valley Center took the lead in the top of the 10th against Josh Parrish and the Mustangs couldn’t rally as they fall to the loser’s bracket.

Spiker Helms led the St. Joe offense with two hits and one run scored.  Nate Bauman add a run scored and an RBI.

The Mustangs drop to 41-11 this season and will play in Wichita again Friday against the Derby (KS) Twins.  The game time will be announced on Thursday.

Chiefs sign former Raven FB Le’Ron McClain

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Wednesday that the club has signed unrestricted free agent FB Le’Ron McClain.

He has rushed 314 times for 1,185 yards (3.8 avg.) with 12 touchdowns and caught 70 passes for 453 yards (6.5 avg.) with two TDs. He has also played in seven postseason games (five starts), carrying the ball 39 times for 102 yards (2.6 avg.) with two scores. McClain originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick (137th overall) with Baltimore in 2007.

The Fort Wayne, Ind. native played in 48 games (29 starts) at Alabama, rushing 37 times for 170 yards with two TDs and catching 48 passes for 405 yards with eight TDs. McClain was an all-state selection at Tuscaloosa County High School in Northport, Ala.

Hochevar, Butler lead Royals past Orioles

Luke Hochevar took some time to reflect during the All-Star break. He’s pitched like an All-Star since then.

Hochevar pitched neatly into the eighth inning, Billy Butler homered and drove in four runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 on Wednesday night.

Hochevar (8-8), the first player picked in the 2006 draft, is 4-0 in his past seven starts and has matched the longest winning streak of his career. He also set a personal high for wins in a season, having gone 7-13 in 2009.

“It gave me time to sit down and look at the things I wanted to do,” Hochevar said of his time off. “I just looked down the road, what I wanted things to look like in a month and the things I needed to do to get there. Just really keeping the game simple and let things come to me instead of just trying so hard, just play the game instead of working at it.

“I’m just going out and trying to execute quality pitches and try to keep it as simple as possible and just make good pitches really, changing speeds, keeping guys guessing, not being predictable,” he said. “You can do those things, but if you’re not executing, they’re good enough hitters to square the ball up. That’s really where my focus has been, making quality pitches.”

Hochevar allowed one earned run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out seven, walked one and retired 16 straight batters during one stretch.

Hochevar is 3-0 with a 2.70 earned-run average in his past four starts.

“Hoch has been on a roll since the All-Star break,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He was terrific. He pitched up, pitched down, pitched in, pitched out. He’s refined his approach and simplified it.”

Jeremy Guthrie (5-15) yielded six runs on eight hits in seven innings. He leads the majors in losses.

Hochevar gave up a run in the first when Adam Jones doubled with two outs and scored on Vladimir Guerrero’s single but did not allow another hit until the eighth.

“We didn’t mount much offense,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “That was the story of the game. Hochevar really picked it up from the third inning on. You’d like to see us mount a little more offense. That seems to happen when Jeremy pitches.”

Butler had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and hit a three-run homer in the seventh. His 13th homer came on a 3-0 pitch after Manny Pina doubled for his first big league hit and Alex Gordon singled.

“It was down the middle, thigh high,” Butler said. “If it’s not in that spot where I’m looking, I’m not swinging. What you do on a 3-0 pitch is you’re looking to do damage. If not, you take it.”

Alcides Escobar’s triple in the second scored Yamaico Navarro and Chris Getz, putting the Royals up 3-1. Escobar and Gordon each contributed three hits.

The Orioles got unearned run in the third when Hochevar committed a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, allowing Robert Andino to advance to third. He scored on J.J. Hardy’s sacrifice fly.

After Matt Wieters singled and Pie doubled in the eighth, Greg Holland replaced Hochevar. Holland hit Andino to load the bases with one out but struck out Hardy and retired Nick Markakis on a ground out to end the inning.

Holland picked up his first career save in his second opportunity.
