Royals’ four-game win streak ends with loss at Oakland

riggertRoyalsOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Sonny Gray was a little frustrated and Josh Reddick was feeling great. The combination helped turn things around.

Reddick and Stephen Vogt homered to back Gray’s solid effort, and the Oakland Athletics ended a four-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

“I’ve been feeling great ever since we left here the first time,” Reddick said. “When you can get the lead at any point, especially the way we’ve been playing, it’s a good thing.”

Gray (2-1) pitched through trouble, lasting six innings to earn his first victory against the Royals in four starts, leaving the Boston Red Sox as the only AL team he has not yet beaten.

“You look at the way the Royals and it’s hard to get deep into the game,” Gray said. “Every one of them make you work for everything. It was a frustrating game. I’d get two quick outs and then 15, 16 pitches later I’d finally get out of the inning.”

Gray, who needed 100 pitches to finish five, gave up two runs and seven hits, walking one and striking out six. He stranded six runners, four in scoring position.

Reddick, who hit the ball hard in every at bat, erased the Royals’ early lead with a three-run shot in the bottom of the first off Chris Young (0-3), who failed to get through five innings for the second straight start.

Young gave up four runs and eight hits in four-plus innings. He walked two and struck out two. The Royals had a four-game winning streak snapped.

“It’s not necessarily command,” Young said. “I think it’s more of the life. I felt like the last few times I my arm slot was a little bit high and I made the adjustment in the third inning and the results got better.”

Ryan Madson, who was part of Kansas City’s championship season last year, earned his third save in three chances.

Lorenzo Cain singled in a run in the first as the Royals scored in the opening inning for the fourth time in five games. Gray struck out Eric Hosmer and Kendrys Morales to end the inning.

Marcus Semien also drove in a run for the A’s, while Raymond Fuentes and Alcides Escobar drove runs for the Royals.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: C Salvador Perez got a regular day off with a day game following a night game.

Athletics: INF Eric Sogard will have arthroscopic surgery performed on his left knee, an injury that has bothered him on and off for two years. “I’m going to have to get a bone spur removed out of my tendon,” Sogard said. “There’s loose bodies in there, so he’s going to go in and take care of that. My patella bone as well is a little pointed at the end, so he’s going to shave that down.” Sogard dealt with it through spring training and then came up with a sore neck that landed him on the DL to open the season. While he was resting the neck, the knee continued to hurt. “It’s unfortunate it’s during the season, but I have to go through that and be out. It’s something I’ve been dealing with for a few years now. It’s been affecting me out there a little bit, mainly at the plate, being my back knee.” … RHP Henderson Alvarez (right shoulder injury) will throw a bullpen Sunday and if he comes out of it OK, will go on a rehab assignment.

UP NEXT

Royals: RHP Kris Medlen (1-0, 3.60) makes the start against Oakland on Sunday. He went 5-0 with a 1.20 ERA in nine road games last year.

Athletics: RHP Chris Bassitt (0-0, 2.92) gets the call in the series finale. He’s 0-0 with a 6.23 ERA in two starts against the Royals.

Houck, Tigers fall at home to No. 9 LSU

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball dropped game two of its series with No. 9 LSU, 9-5, on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Stadium. The game was tied 4-4 going into the seventh, but LSU scored five runs in the frame with four coming on a grand slam by Beau Jordan to take a 9-5 lead. LSU tagged Mizzou starter Tanner Houck (Collinsville, Ill.) for a career-high eight runs and five walks as he took the loss, his third of the season. Mizzou falls to 20-17 and 4-10 in SEC play this season.

LSU’s Alex Lange earned the win, his third of the season. LSU improves to 24-11 and 8-6 in SEC play. Senior 1B Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) extended his hitting streak to a career-long nine games, the longest streak by a Tiger this season. C Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) and OF Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) each homered in the loss. Harris drove in two of Mizzou’s four runs, his seventh game this season with multiple RBIs, second on the team.

Houck cruised through the first inning on 13 pitches, getting a pair of strikeouts looking and an easy 1-3 bounce out to retire the side. After Mizzou put two men aboard against Lange in the first, Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) struck out to strand a pair. LSU then tagged Houck for a two-out run in the second inning on an RBI single to RF by Beau Jordan.

Houck then escaped a runners-on-the-corners, no-out jam in the third with a pair of Ks and a flyout to center. Mizzou then took that momentum into the bottom of the third and plated a pair of runs, both with two outs. The first came on an RBI single by Harris and the next on a bases-loaded walk by Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas).

LSU then scored three in the fourth inning, all with two outs, to take a 4-2 lead. Mizzou then homered in back-to-back innings in the fourth and fifth with solo shots by Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) and Harris to tie the game at 4-4. Bond’s homer was his team-leading fifth while Harris’ was his first of 2016.

The game remained tied until the seventh inning as Houck struggled, loading the bases with two singles and a walk. He then walked in a run to give LSU a 5-4 lead while ending his day in favor of reliever Liam Carter (Highland Park, Ill.). Carter surrendered a grand slam to Beau Jordan and that gave LSU a 9-4 lead.

Mizzou then went quietly in the seventh and eighth despite reliever Austin Tribby (Springfield, Mo.) coming in and settling things down, pitching 2.1 shutout frames to close the game. Mizzou added a run in the ninth on Lavy’s team-leading 14th double of the season, cutting the lead to 9-5.

Mizzou and LSU will close the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.

St. Louis belts six homers in 14-3 win over Reds

riggertCardinalsST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday was back in the groove Friday night.

The St. Louis outfielder homered twice and drove in four to pace a six-homer attack as the Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 14-3.

Hollliday, who entered the game with a .188 average and without a home run, reached base four times and recorded his 20th career multi-homer game.

“The results haven’t been what I wanted, but you’ve just got to stick with it,” Holliday said. “I felt like I was getting good swings and tonight I finally got some results.”

Aledmys Diaz and Brandon Moss each added three-run homers to help the Cardinals to their sixth win in the last seven games. They have scored seven or more runs in all six wins and hit double-digits four times.

Moss was sure that Holliday would eventually bounce out of his funk.

“He’s been hitting the ball well,” Moss said. “He probably hasn’t gotten as many hits as he’d like, but he’s been squaring the ball.”

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny was glad to see Holliday break loose. Holliday had just four homers in 73 games during an injury-plagued campaign last season.

“It’s always nice to see Matt get on the board in the home run column,” Matheny said. “He hit the ball a couple times with authority to center and that’s tough to do.”

Holliday wasn’t the Cardinals only long-ball artist.

Moss, Randal Grichuk and Matt Adams also homered. Adams’ pinch-hit homer was the second of the game and sixth of the season. That surpasses the Cardinals total of four from pinch hitters last season.

Carlos Martinez (2-0) allowed three runs and six hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Martinez was pleased with his pitching performance, but wanted to join the home run parade as well.

“When Moss hit a homer, I wanted to hit a homer too,” Martinez said.

Rookie starter Tim Melville (0-1) gave up seven runs in three innings for the loss.

Joey Votto had a three-run homer for the Reds, who have lost eight of their last 10 at Busch Stadium.

Holliday drilled the 11th pitch from Melville over the wall in center to give his team a 3-0 lead. He added a solo shot in the sixth.

Melville began the game with nine successive balls.

“Obviously, he was having a hard time finding the strike zone,” Holliday said. “You just keep taking until you get a strike and then you get aggressive with him.”

Diaz pushed the lead to 7-3 with a line drive over the left-field wall in the third.

Melville, who went to high school in the St. Louis suburb of Wentzville, gave up six earned runs in his second major league start.

“I just wasn’t executing pitches,” Melville said. “It was tough, any loss is tough.”

The Reds injury-plagued pitching staff gave up 13 hits and walked four.

“It was kind of a blood-letting,” Cincinnati manager Bryan Price said. “It wasn’t a competitive effort.”

Griffons sweep Fort Hays State, move into 2nd place in the MIAA

riggertMissouriWesternHAYS, Kan. – The Missouri Western baseball team (28-11, 20-8) did what it’s been doing and did what it hasn’t done in a doubleheader sweep at Fort Hays State on Friday. The two wins pushed Missouri Western into second place in the MIAA standings and gave the team a seven-game winning streak. The team also improved to 21-3 on the road.

Game 1: MWSU 13, Fort Hays State 2 (8 innings)

Five runs in the top of the eighth inning for the Griffons gave the team a run-rule win in the first of the twin-bill.

David Glaude started the five-run eighth with a two-RBI double, his second double of the game. Kody Matthews picked up two RBIs in the eighth with his record-tying fifth hit of the game. Matthews is one of a handful of Griffons to record five hits in a game, though no one has ever done more. He was 5-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the game. Cosimo Cannella went 3-5 with a pair of RBIs. Brandon Downs drove in four going 1-3 at the plate. His one hit was his sixth home run in his last five games.

Richard Peoples moved to 7-3 with the win. He went seven innings and held Fort Hays to the two runs on 10 hits.

Game 2: MWSU 2, Fort Hays State 1

For the first time in 2016, the team won a game without scoring four or more runs. Nick Gawley’s RBI single in the sixth proved to be the game winner and broke a 1-1 tie. Gawley’s two-out single up the middle scored Orenco Fisher.

The one-run lead was enough for Evan Jones and Preston Baiely, who combined to give the Griffons another solid pitching performance. Jones moved to 5-1 on the year allowing just three hits in seven innings of work. He struck out three and walked one. Bailey earned his third save of the year and also struck out the three and allowed one hit in two innings.

Missouri Western now returns home for four-straight beginning Tuesday night when Northwest Missouri State visits for a 7 p.m. first pitch.

No. 15 Griffon softball splits doubleheader with Northwest Missouri State

MWSUST. JOSEPH – The No. 15 Griffon Softball team turned to theatrics once again, splitting a non-conference doubleheader with Northwest Missouri State. The Griffons rallied in the seventh inning of both games, coming up short in game one, but tying game two before an extra-inning victory.

Game 1: Northwest Missouri 3, #15 MWSU 2

Missouri Western tried to mount another seventh inning rally against the Bearcats, but came up just short with the tying run at first base.

Down 3-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Hamilton led off with a double up the middle. Shelby Uhl scored, running for Hamilton, two batters later on Katie Klosterman’s one-out double to left center. Sydney Washington got Klosterman to third with a fly ball to center that went all the way to the warning track. Megan Korgie singled down the right field line to drive in Klosterman, but Rebekah Mueller popped up to the shortstop to the game.

The Griffons’ three hits in the inning gave them five for the game. Kendle Schieber held Missouri Western to two hits through the first six innings. All the Northwest Missouri State runs came via Alexix Kelsey home runs. She hit two for the Bearcats, a two-run shot to right in the first and a solo homer to left in the fourth. Other than Kelsey’s two long balls, the Bearcats were limited to two hits off Janie Smith.

Game 2: #15 MWSU 4, Northwest Missouri 3 (8 innings)

Down 3-1 headed to the bottom of the seventh, Katie Klosterman started what had to feel like Déjà vu for the Bearcats. The junior led off the inning with a home run to right center that Sydney Washington followed with a home run down the left field line to tie the game. Missouri Western stranded a runner on second.

Taylor Hamilton then did it again, earning her third walk-off hit of the season with a double to right center that scored Paige Shifflett who singled to lead off the eighth. Riley Wilson got Shifflett to second with a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt.

The Griffons were able to overcome four errors in the game and just three hits through the first six innings. Hamilton went 3-4 in the game and Washington was 2-3. Shyanne Saladino picked up the win that moved Missouri Western to 35-11 overall.
