Missouri wins final exhibition game against UMSL

MUThe Mizzou men’s basketball team wrapped up exhibition play with a 77-54 victory over UMSL Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena. Freshman Montaque Gill-Caesar paced the Tigers with a game-high 19 points and Jonathan Williams recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

After holding a five-point lead at halftime, Mizzou pulled away down the stretch by attacking down low and getting to the free throw line. The Tigers outscored UMSL 34-8 in the paint for the game and cashed in at the charity stripe, converting 13-of-17 as a team.

On the defensive end, Mizzou posted eight total blocks and prevented the Tritons from getting many second chance opportunities. In the second half, the Tigers limited UMSL to just one offensive rebound and held a 22-10 advantage on the glass.

Mizzou countered a slow start from the field with a 16-3 run midway through the first frame. Following a long three-pointer from sophomore Wes Clark, Gill-Caesar tossed in back-to-back buckets to pull within five, 26-21. The Tigers then turned to Williams III, who earned a trip to the free throw line on three consecutive possessions and made five-of-six. On the final possession of the first half, Williams III stepped outside and knocked down a deep trey to hand Mizzou a 39-34 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Tigers consistently found ways to get to the rim and score easy buckets. Junior forward Ryan Rosburg worked in the paint for a basket twice in the opening minute to set the tone. Two possessions later, Gill-Caesar yanked down an offensive rebound and made a put back layup in traffic and the Tigers never looked back.

At the 10:09 mark, Keith Shamburger dished an extra pass on the perimeter to set up freshman Tramaine Isabell for a corner three. Shamburger then scored on back-to-back possessions with a jumper and trey of his own. The senior put an exclamation point on the Tigers’ big second half with a nifty alley-oop pass to Deuce Bello, who threw down a ferocious dunk. Shamburger finished his all-around performance with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists.

With exhibition play in the books, the Kim Anderson head-coaching era will officially begin as Mizzou opens up the regular season next Friday, Nov. 14. The Tigers will take on UMKC at Mizzou Arena. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m.

No. 7 K-State gets rolled at No. 6 TCU 41-20

riggertKStateFORT WORTH, Texas — Trevone Boykin did an acrobatic flip on the second of his three touchdown runs and threw for 219 yards and another score for No. 6 TCU in a 41-20 victory over No. 9 Kansas State on Saturday night that had huge Big 12 and playoff implications.

Aaron Green, filling in for the injured B.J. Catalon, ran 18 times for 171 yards for the Horned Frogs (8-1, 5-1) in their first-ever home game matching top-10 teams. Green had a 65-yard TD run in the third quarter.

A week after Boykin apologized in the locker room after a one-point win at West Virginia for what he considered a subpar performance, the dual-threat quarterback set a career high with 123 yards rushing on 17 carries and completed 23 of 34 passes. Boykin had a 2-yard TD run and a 10-yard scoring pass to David Porter in the first quarter that put TCU up 14-0 against coach Gary Patterson’s alma mater.

The end of Kansas State’s five-game winning streak created a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings with the Wildcats (7-2, 5-1), TCU and No. 10 Baylor (8-1, 5-1) with three games left in the regular season.

In the College Football Playoff rankings, TCU is sixth, a spot ahead of Kansas State with Baylor 12th. The new rankings come out Tuesday, and the final poll in four weeks will take into account conference championships.

Boykin and Green gave TCU two 100-yard rushers for the second time in three games, with this performance coming against the Big 12’s best rushing defense at an average of 101 yards per game. K-State also led the league by allowing averages of 321 yards and 18.6 points, but the Frogs rolled up 553 total yards and the most points allowed by the Wildcats this season.

Tyler Lockett had 11 catches for 196 yards with a 70-yard TD, giving him 3,073 career yards receiving and surpassing his father’s K-State record of 3,032 set from 1993-96. The younger Lockett also has 203 receptions with 24 TDs, closing in on the school record of 218 catches and 26 TDs by his father Kevin.

Tyler Lockett had a 91-yard kickoff return late in the first half wiped out by a holding call.

On TCU’s opening drive of the second half, Boykin took off on a first-down run from the K-State 19 and was in a sprint when he got inside the 5 and did a somersault, hurling himself into the air. Though he was unable to keep his balance when his heels hit the ground first, he quickly bounced up after landing in the end zone to give TCU a 24-7 lead.

Kansas State responded with Jake Waters’ 15-yard TD pass to Curry Sexton, a drive extended by a pass interference call on Kevin White on a deep third-down incompletion intended for Lockett.

Three plays after Sexton’s catch, Green took a handoff to the right and was along the sideline before cutting back and past several defenders. Green went all the way across the field, and picked up a line of blockers before finishing off a 65-yard run.

The Frogs played their fifth ranked opponent in six games. Their only loss in that span came four weeks ago at Baylor when they led by 21 points in the fourth quarter before the Bears kicked a field goal on the last play of the game for the win.

TCU has games left at Kansas and Texas before the regular-season finale Dec. 6 at home against Iowa State. None of those teams have a winning record.

Kansas State, whose only previous loss had been at home to Auburn, has an open date next week before going to West Virginia, playing its home finale against Kansas and then going to Baylor.

Kansas hammers Iowa State for rare Big 12 win

riggertKULAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Michael Cummings threw for 278 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, Corey Avery ran for 103 yards and another score, and Kansas beat up Iowa State 34-14 on Saturday for just its second Big 12 win in the past four years.

Tony Pierson added 101 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Nigel King had 101 yards receiving as the Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5) raced out to a 24-0 lead in the battle for the basement.

Iowa State put together a pair of touchdown drives to make the game interesting, but the Jayhawks answered with inspired play by their defense and just enough offense.

The victory ended the Jayhawks’ four-game losing streak to Iowa State (2-7, 0-6), and may go a long way toward helping interim coach Clint Bowen earn the full-time job. He’s already matched the number of Big 12 wins that Charlie Weis and Turner Gill managed during their brief tenures.

No. 21 Nebraska defeats SW Minnesota State in exhibition opener

NebraskaNo. 21 Nebraska shook off a slow start in its exhibition opener and rebounded for an 83-61 win over Southwest Minnesota State Thursday evening.

The Huskers, who shot just 30 percent in the second half, rallied behind the play of sophomore Tai Webster, who scored nine of his 16 points in a 15-4 surge to open the second half.

Webster went 4-of-5 from the floor on the night, including a trio of 3-pointers as four Huskers finished in double figures. Junior Shavon Shields led all scorers with a game-high 29 points and nine rebounds, while Terran Petteway and Benny Parker added 10 points apiece for the Big Red.

The Huskers, who trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, were down 34-30 at the break before Webster took over. The sophomore hit consecutive 3-pointers during an 8-0 Husker run to give Nebraska its first lead since the opening minutes. The 6-foot-4 sophomore then capped the run with a conventional 3-point play, putting Nebraska ahead 45-38 with 15:06 left.

Southwest Minnesota State continued to hang around and was within 45-43 with 12:55 left, but a jumper by David Rivers and four Webster free throws capped a 6-0 spurt and put the Huskers ahead 51-43. SMSU pulled to within five at 51-46 on a Cole Martin 3-pointer, but the Huskers put the game away with a 16-3 run highlighted by eight straight points from Shields.

Martin, an Omaha native, led SMSU with 12 points, while Joey Bartlett added 11 in a losing effort.

Early on, the Mustangs gave the Huskers fits, using a 16-2 first-half run to build an 11-point lead after a 3-pointer from Bartlett. The Huskers were ice cold for the first 12 minutes, hitting just two of their first 15 shots from floor, as SMSU pushed the lead to 22-9 after Bartlett’s second 3-pointer of the half.

The Huskers roared back with increased intensity on the defensive end, as a Shields 3-pointer and a Petteway steal and dunk cut the margin to eight and forced SMSU to take a timeout. The Huskers kept chipping away and got a strong effort from Benny Parker off the bench, as he had six points and three steals and helped NU converted nine Mustang turnovers into 12 points in the half.

Nebraska trailed 34-25 before closing the half with five straight points, including Webster’s first 3-pointer of the night, to pull within 34-30.

The Huskers open the season on Sunday, Nov. 16, when they take on Northern Kentucky. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
