Western soccer drops heartbreaker to Fort Hays State in MIAA Tournament

MWSUA record breaking season for the Missouri Western women’s soccer team came to a heartbreaking end Wednesday night as the Griffons fell to Fort Hays 1-0 in double-overtime in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.

Kelsey Steffens snuck a ball past Sarah Lyle in the 107th minute for the winner. The ball made it just past Lyle inside the left post.

It was Missouri Western’s first postseason appearance and ended a season that saw more than 20 records broken, including the most wins in school history. MWSU ends the season 9-9-1 overall.

Lyle finished the game with eight saves and the Griffon defense, which has been stellar all season, allowed just nine Tiger shots on goal on 21 total shots.

Six Griffons earn All-MIAA soccer honors

riggertMissouriWesternSix members of the Missouri Western women’s soccer team have been named All-MIAA, the most since 2009.

Goalkeeper Sarah Lyle, Defender Taylor Gant and Forward Tara Russell were named to the second team. It’s the first time more than one Griffon has appeared on any team other than honorable mention.

Lyle and Gant each earned MIAA Student Athlete of the week at their respective positions once this season. Lyle, a sophomore from Duluth, Minnesota, set MWSU records for goals against average (0.85), most wins (9) and most shutouts (8). Her 11 career wins also moved her to the top of that category.

Gant, a sophomore from Overland Park, Kansas, has been a key part of a Griffon defense that set season records for goals against average and most shutouts.

Russell has left her mark on the MWSU record book in two years. The senior from Olathe, Kansas, led the Griffons with four goals this season. She will leave Missouri Western as the program’s all-time leader in points per game (0.70), goals per game (0.30), shots per game (2.67) and shots on goal per game (1.56). Her three game winning goals this season are tied for the most in a season at MWSU.

Defender Sydney Andrews was named to the third team. Andrews, a junior from Wichita, Kansas, has helped the Griffon defense to new heights along with helping the Griffon offense. She added two goals this year, including a record breaking, ninth game winning goal for the team in their overtime win over Lindenwood last week.

Defender Paige Phipps and Mid-Fielder K.C. Ramsell were named to the honorable mention team. Phipps is a freshman from Omaha, Nebraska and is part of a young, impressive defensive unit. A four-year player from Bellevue, Nebraska, Ramsell is in the top-10 of nearly every career statistical category at MWSU. Her three goals this season are the second most on the team.

Jayhawks roll to exhibition win over Washburn

KUThirty minutes in, the big play that Kansas fans await each gameday came through via a Kelly Oubre, Jr. breakaway dunk delivered by a grinning Wayne Selden, Jr. Kansas downed Washburn, 85-53, in the unofficial start to the 2014-15 men’s basketball season Monday night inside Allen Fieldhouse.

Squaring off in exhibition play for the first time since 2012 and the 40th time overall, No. 5 Kansas and Washburn were heartily welcomed by the Allen Fieldhouse crowd, eager to watch the latest edition of the Jayhawks in action. High-octane recruit Cliff Alexander played to his hype, leading the Jayhawks with a game-high-tying 14 points on 6-for-8 accuracy and coming in just one rebound short of a double-double. His three blocks, all in the first half, led his team’s solid defensive effort as the Jayhawks chalked up nine rejections and held the Ichabods under 30 percent shooting.

KU’s other freshman All-American, Oubre was also solid in his debut with nine points, including his thunder dunk inside the 12-minute mark. By night’s end, all 15 Jayhawks checked in and 12 scored en route to a 30-for-53 field-goal performance (56.6 percent). Nine of those came from behind the arc, only one shy of KU’s best three-point total a year ago (10 vs. Iowa State, 1/29/14).

Sophomore guard Frank Mason started the game at point, flanked on either side by Selden and freshman Devonte’ Graham, the only newcomer to crack the starting lineup. All-Big 12 returnee Perry Ellis reclaimed his starting spot, while junior forward Jamari Traylor would have registered his second career start had the game counted.

Mason looked the part at floor general, dishing out a game-high seven assists to just one turnover while turning in 13 points with only one missed shot on the night. Sophomore forward Landen Lucas posted a perfect 4-for-4 show to tally nine points and six rebounds. He, Traylor, Alexander and junior forward Hunter Mickelson all swatted multiple shots in the win.

On the opposing bench, senior guard Korey Fisher tied Alexander for the game’s lead with 14 points. He hit two of Washburn’s three three-pointers on Monday as the Ichabods were held to 3-for-20 from long range.

Senior guard Kyle Wiggins connected on a long jumper to put his team ahead 2-1, but the early lead would be the Ichabods’ last. Selden answered with a three on the other end to fuel an 8-0 run, capped by Graham’s first fastbreak layup as a Jayhawk. Not 15 seconds after he checked in, Alexander turned KU’s run to 12-straight points with back-to-back buckets. Halfway through the opening 20 minutes, Ellis already had a three-pointer to his credit and four of KU’s five freshmen had checked into the game. Like Alexander, Oubre also wasted no time collecting his first basket as he drained a three from the corner in hurry.

The rookies shared their night of firsts with Mickelson, who at long last heard his named called after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. He scored a put-back layup, a turnaround hook shot and blocked a shot to power KU’s lead past the 20-point plateau. Moments later, a three from Mason pushed it over 25 points.

Three minutes remained in the first half when a runner through the lane by Fisher finally put the Ichabods in double-digits. By halftime, KU’s defense had taken its toll, pestering Washburn with seven blocks and five steals. While Kansas shot 52 percent in first frame, the Jayhawks forced the Ichabods to miss 25 of their 30 first-half shots to take a commanding 42-13 lead to the lockerroom.

Scoring was slower to start the second half as nearly five minutes ticked away before free throws from Ellis and Mason saw KU eclipse 50 points. The ‘Svi for Three’ call from the PA announcer rang out for the first of, what the Jayhawk fan base hopes many, times this season after freshman guard Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk connected from three-point territory, and the Jayhawks found themselves ahead by 30 points, 59-29.

Firmly in command, Kansas utilized various lineups for the rest of the night – all of which are likely to appear in the regular season. Graham spent some time in the point guard spot and fired off five late points, before Evan Manning, Tyler Self and Josh Pollard replaced the backcourt for the final minutes of the 85-53 win.

UP NEXT

Kansas will conclude exhibition play when it plays host to Emporia State on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.

K-State’s Waters named semifinalist for Maxwell Award

riggertKStateKansas State senior quarterback Jake Waters is one of 20 semifinalists for the 2014 Maxwell Award, given annually to the College Player of the Year, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.

Waters is the second Wildcat in the last three years to be named a semifinalist for the award and the third overall as Michael Bishop and Collin Klein were finalists in 1998 and 2012, respectively. A product of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Waters is joined on the list by fellow Big 12 quarterbacks Trevone Boykin (TCU) and Bryce Petty (Baylor) as well as wide receiver Kevin White (West Virginia).

Waters has been effective as both a passer and runner during his senior campaign, accounting for 285.3 yards of total offense through eight games, including 234.8 yards through the air. He has accumulated 300 yards of total offense on two occasions as he totaled 395 yards (290 pass, 105 rush) in a 45-13 win over Texas Tech and 377 yards (239 pass, 138 rush) in a 32-28 victory at Iowa State. His total against the Red Raiders was tied for ninth in school history, while his performance against the Cyclones earned him Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors.

A former community-college transfer, Waters has thrown for at least 200 yards in nine-consecutive games dating back to the 2013 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl victory, the longest streak by a Bill Snyder-coached quarterback. He is on pace for 3,052 passing yards this season, which would be the second-most in school history and the most under Snyder. Additionally, he has gone 183 touches (combined passes and rushes) without a turnover dating back to the Auburn game on September 18.

Three finalists for the 2014 Maxwell Award will be announced on November 24, while the winner will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast on ESPN on December 11.

No. 9 Kansas State (7-1, 5-0 Big 12) travels to No. 7 TCU (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) for a top-10 primetime matchup on Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. The game, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m., will be shown to a national audience on FOX.

riggertMizzouMizzou Football junior DE Shane Ray (Kansas City, Mo.) has been named one of 20 semifinalists for the 20th Chuck Bednarik Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. The award is presented annually by the organization to the outstanding defensive player of the year.

With his record-breaking effort against Kentucky (Nov. 1), Ray leads the SEC in sacks with 12.0. During the final minutes of the game, Ray sacked Kentucky QB Patrick Towles to break the single-season sack record of 11.5, previously set by Aldon Smith in 2009 and matched by Michael Sam in 2013. His sack total currently ranks tied for second nationally.

The first-year starter also leads the SEC in tackles-for-loss with 16.0 among his 50 total tackles. Ray has earned SEC weekly honors twice and been the heart of the Mizzou defense that leads the league in sacks (31.0) and ranks tied for first in tackles-for-loss (69.0).

Ray was added to the Bednarik Award watch list on Oct. 15, based on his excellent performance at that point in the season. The original watch list was compiled based on top performers in 2013.

The Maxwell Football Club will announce the three finalists for the award on Nov. 24. The winner of the 20th Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast on ESPN on Dec. 11. MU’s Shane Ray named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week

Missouri Football vs. Kentucky - November 1, 2014Photo by: Clayton HotzeMizzou Football junior DE Shane Ray (Kansas City, Mo.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week, as announced tonight by the league office.  Ray was cited for his outstanding play in helping lead Mizzou to a 20-10 win last Saturday against Kentucky.  In the game, Ray tallied two quarterback sacks to up his season total to 12, which broke the Mizzou single-season record of 11.5, previously co-held by former standouts Aldon Smith (2009) and Michael Sam (2013).

Ray ended the game with five total tackles, the two sacks – which both came on 4th down plays to give Mizzou possession of the ball – while adding a pass break up to his ledger.  It marked the fifth two-sack game of the season for Ray, who now leads the SEC in both sacks (12.0) and tackles for loss (16.0), while ranking second and third in the nation in those categories, respectively.

This marks the third time in 2014 that Ray has won the SEC defensive lineman of the week award, adding to the previous honors claimed on Sept. 27th (at South Carolina) and Oct. 18th (at Florida).  Additionally, he won the SEC Defensive Player of the Week award for his stellar play against UCF on Sept. 13th, giving him four league awards this year in all.

Chiefs send Jets to eighth straight loss

riggertChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith insisted he was looking for Dwayne Bowe in the end zone, a rarity considering the Chiefs quarterback has yet to throw a touchdown pass to a wide receiver this season.

What happened next in their 24-10 victory over the Jets on Sunday was even rarer.

The pass was batted at the line of scrimmage by Jets linebacker Calvin Pace. It bounced right into the hands of tight end Anthony Fasano, who had been blocked to the ground, and he rolled over across the goal-line for a touchdown that extended the Chiefs’ lead to two scores.

More from ESPN.com

The Chiefs did just enough right to come away with an uninspiring victory against the Jets. That won’t be enough next week against the Bills, writes Adam Teicher. Story

Every TD is an epic struggle for the Jets, but the Chiefs were able to score with a player sitting on his behind. “Bad team, rotten luck” sums up the latest twist in a lost season, Rich Cimini writes. Story

“I don’t know what to say,” Smith said, smiling. “A freaky play.”

Just the kind of play that’s been going Kansas City’s way during a three-game win streak — and the kind that has been going against New York during its eight-game skid.

The Jets’ losing streak is their longest since 1996, when they went 1-15 in their final year under Rich Kotite. The franchise has never lost nine in a row, an embarrassment embattled coach Rex Ryan and his troops will try to avoid next Sunday against Pittsburgh.

“I thought it was typical of how this season’s gone for us,” Ryan said of the bizarre bounce that led to Fasano’s touchdown. “That’s what I thought.”

Smith finished with 199 yards and two touchdowns passing, and Jamaal Charles ran for another score for the Chiefs (5-3), who won for the fifth time in six games on the same day that former running back Priest Holmes was inducted into their ring of honor.

Starting his first game with the Jets (1-8) in place of Geno Smith, Michael Vick threw for 196 yards and a touchdown. He briefly left early in the fourth quarter after taking a massive hit from the Chiefs’ Josh Mauga and walking unsteadily off the field, but returned to finish.

Smith was inactive with a shoulder injury, so Matt Simms had to play one series.

“My head hit the ground, but it was cool,” Vick said. “Initially, I was dinged for a minute. But I respect the NFL rules and the concussion protocol. I went through it. I took all the appropriate steps and I passed all the tests and I came back.”

New York actually moved the ball well through gusty conditions, utilizing Percy Harvin in the running and passing games. But the Jets kept misfiring deep in Chiefs territory, settling for a field goal just before halftime and then turning it over on downs at the Kansas City 3 early in the fourth quarter — Vick was injured on that fourth-down play.

In all, the Jets were stopped on fourth down three times in the fourth quarter.

“We had some opportunities and we didn’t capitalize on them,” said Vick, who will start next Sunday against Pittsburgh. “Whenever that happens, and the other team does capitalize on theirs, you don’t finding yourself winning the game.”

The Chiefs set the tempo from the opening drive, moving 81 yards in relative ease. Charles was the workhorse, carrying six times and capping the drive with a 1-yard TD plunge.

After the Chiefs forced three-and-out, it took them just seven more plays to score again — this time on a play that encapsulated the way everything has been going right for Kansas City, and the way everything has been going wrong for New York.

With first-and-goal at the 2-yard line, Smith’s pass was knocked down by Pace. But the nice defensive play sent the ball right to Fasano, who caught the inadvertent pass on his rump, rolled over the goal line and gave the Chiefs a stunning — if not humorous — touchdown for a 14-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ defense was getting after Vick every time he dropped to pass.

Justin Houston, who had 4 1/2 sacks of Vick when he faced the Eagles a year ago, had two more on the elusive quarterback Sunday. Defensive tackle Dontari Poe also tracked Vick down for a sack, all before Mauga knocked him from the game with his crushing blow in the fourth quarter.

The only bright spot for the Jets was the play of Harvin, who caught 11 passes for 129 yards in his second game since getting traded from Seattle. Harvin showed the speed and shiftiness that the Jets were hoping he would provide when they made the deal.

It was just far too little in a game dominated by Kansas City’s defense.

“When we were 0-2, nobody really believed in us. We’re 5-3 right now, and pretty sure nobody believes in us,” Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali said. “Our goal is to continue to believe in what we’re doing and win games. That’s all that matters around here.”

MWSU women’s soccer falls to Central Missouri in regular season finale

MWSU
The greatest regular season in Missouri Western women’s soccer history came to an end Sunday with a 4-0 loss to No. 9 Central Missouri.

The Griffons end their season with the most wins (9) in school history and fewest losses (8) in program history. They now await their pairing in the team’s first ever appearance in the MIAA tournament.

Western used the wind to their advantage in the first half against the Jennies, going to the break in a 0-0 tie and even in shots with the MIAA leading squad. Central Missouri took advantage of the second period wind at their backs, scoring four goals including an own goal off a Griffon defender to cap off the victory.

Missouri Western takes a 9-8-1 overall record and 6-7-1 MIAA mark into the first round of the conference tournament scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
