Missouri Western volleyball wins at Emporia in five sets

riggertMissouriWesternThe Missouri Western volleyball team won for the 10th time in 11 tries Friday night as they defeated Emporia State in five sets at Emporia.

MWSU claimed the decisive set with a 15-13 victory, winning on a Hornet attack error. Nothing was easy for the Griffons who pulled out the win with a .173 hitting percentage. After dropping the first set, 25-18, the Griffons were in danger of falling in a 2-0 hole to the Hornets. Emporia State led 24-20 in the second set before Missouri Western rallied for five straight points, including two service aces from Kelsey Olion and two kills from Erica Rottinghaus. MWSU took the second set 28-26 then took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-23 win in set three.Emporia State forced the fifth set with a 25-20, then Missouri Western took control, leading the entire final set.

Rottinghaus finished with a season-high, 21 kills and matched her season best, 15 digs. Amanda Boender also matched her best performance of the season with 15 kills. Olion and Jessie Thorup each finished with 13 kills. Jordan Chohon had 60 assists and 10 digs, while Sarah Faubel led the team with 19 digs.

The first-place Griffons are now 16-4 and 10-2 in the MIAA. They travel to Topeka for a rematch with No. 5 Washburn Saturday night. The last time the two squared off, Missouri Western handed the Ichabods their first loss of the season. The two teams are now part of a four-way tie atop the MIAA standings with Central Missouri and Nebraska Kearney. The match will begin at 6 p.m.

Griffon soccer defeats Nebraksa-Kearney for fifth straight 1-0 win

riggertMissouriWesternThe script was there and Missouri Western women’s soccer team followed right along with their fifth consecutive 1-0 victory Friday night against Nebraska Kearney. With the win, the 2014 Griffons have matched the school record for most wins in a season with eight.

Tara Russell scored in the first minute of the second overtime to give Missouri Western the victory. Russell scored in the box off a deflection for her second-straight game winner and the fourth goal of the season for the senior.

Neither team managed much offense with the Lopers claiming a 7-6 advantage in total shots. Each team mustered just three shots on goal. All three of those Nebraska Kearney shots equated to saves for Sarah Lyle and her, school record, eighth save of the season. The Griffon defense has pitched five straight shutouts, not allowing a goal since Sept. 28 against Northeastern State.

Missouri Western is now 8-4-1 and 5-3-1 in the MIAA. The Griffons travel to Fort Hays on Sunday for a, something must give battle with the Tigers, who completed their third straight shutout on Friday night. The match begins at noon.

Cardinals’ season ends in Game 5 of NLCS on Ishikawa’s walk-off HR

riggertCardinalsSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Travis Ishikawa hit the first homer to end an NL Championship Series, a three-run shot that sent the San Francisco Giants to the World Series with a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 5 on Thursday night.

These every-other-year Giants will face the Royals in an all wild-card Fall Classic that begins Tuesday night in Kansas City.

Pablo Sandoval singled to start the ninth against Michael Wacha, making his first appearance of the postseason for the Cardinals. After an out, Brandon Belt walked to bring up Ishikawa, who drove a 2-0 pitch into the elevated seats in right field to set off an orange towel-waving frenzied celebration.

It was the first time a homer sent the Giants into the World Series since perhaps the most famous drive ever in baseball — Bobby Thomson’s “Shot Heard `Round the World” in a 1951 playoff.

“These guys have been through it,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “They have been battle-tested and they know how to handle themselves on this type of stage, and then add to that the kids that we brought up, and then Ishikawa. I mean, what a great story.”

Ishikawa knew right away on his first career postseason homer, raising his right arm into the air as he watched his ball sail into the seats. He emphatically threw his helmet down to the dirt in triumph and joined his jubilant teammates at home plate as fireworks shot off from the center field scoreboard.

Pinch hitter Michael Morse homered leading off the eighth against Pat Neshek, who replaced Adam Wainwright to start the inning, to tie it 3-all.

Morse was batting for Madison Bumgarner, who was named NLCS MVP.

After taking a 3-1 lead in the series wild throws the past two days, the Giants used the long ball to advance to their third Series in five years by knocking out the defending NL champions.

Rookie Joe Panik hit a two-run drive in the third inning off Wainwright for the Giants first homer in seven games.

“Just a gutty effort through all this and I couldn’t be prouder of these guys. They just don’t stop fighting,” Bochy said.

Ishikawa was Pittsburgh’s Opening Day first baseman, but was soon cut. He re-signed with the Giants, his original team, and went to the minor leagues before making it back to the majors.

Ishikawa took a winding journey to his winning home run, too. Earlier in the game, he misplayed a fly ball to left field that cost his team a run. He more than made up for it with his final swing.

Bumgarner did not allow a hit after Tony Cruz homered to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead with two outs in the fourth, working eight efficient innings. Matt Adams also went deep in the fourth.

Santiago Casilla worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth for the win.

Adams drew a one-out walk and Daniel Descalso entered to pinch run. Randal Grichuk singled and Descalso reached third on Kolten Wong’s grounder.

Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford snagged the chopper that glanced off diving third baseman Sandoval’s glove, then Crawford threw to second for the force.

Cruz walked to load the bases with two outs after consecutive pitches near his head, and Giants manager Bruce Bochy lifted him for Jeremy Affeldt. Pitching for the fourth straight day, the lefty retired pinch-hitter Oscar Taveras on a grounder that Affeldt fielded and sprinted to first.

Out to prove himself, Wainwright rediscovered his old postseason rhythm after a couple of rough October outings, and that still wasn’t enough once the bullpen took over with a one-run lead.

Once Wainwright left the game, the Giants grabbed their chance.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny turned to Neshek after Wainwright reached 97 pitches and retired his final 10 batters in order.

For the bottom of the ninth, Matheny made a move that will be second-guessed all offseason. He went with Wacha, the hard-throwing star of the 2013 NLCS. But Wacha had missed much of the summer with an injury and last pitched on Sept. 26.

Missouri’s Ray added to Bednarik Award watch list

riggertMizzouMizzou Football junior DE Shane Ray (Kansas City, Mo.) has been added to the watch list for the 20th Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to college football’s defensive player of the year. Additions were made by the Maxwell Football Club to bring attention to several noteworthy players from thus far in the 2014 season.

Ray has been one of the standout defensive players across the college football landscape in 2014, ranking second nationally in tackles-for-loss (12.5) and tied for third in sacks (8.0). His 8.0-sack total through six games is already tied for the eighth-best single-season mark in Mizzou history.

In his first season as a full-time starter, Ray has easily surpassed his 2013 totals (14 games). While backing up future NFL Draft picks Kony Ealy and Michael Sam, Ray registered 9.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.5 sacks among 39 total tackles.

Ray joins teammate Markus Golden (St. Louis, Mo.) on the watch list. The senior Tiger has been stout in 2014, totaling 8.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks among 35 stops.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced on November 3 and three finalists for the award will be announced November 24. The winner of the 2014 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be held on December 11. The formal presentation will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 13, 2015.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2014 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.

St. Louis drops game four of NLCS to Giants; trail series 3-1

riggertCardinalsSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Buster Posey drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants took advantage of some clunky defense by St. Louis first baseman Matt Adams, beating the Cardinals 6-4 on Wednesday night to move within one victory of the World Series.

Chasing their third title in five years, the Giants lead the best-of-seven NL Championship Series 3-1 after poor throws cost the Cardinals yet again.

October ace Madison Bumgarner can pitch San Francisco to another pennant Thursday night at home in Game 5. Struggling All-Star Adam Wainwright starts for St. Louis, now facing the same daunting deficit the Giants overcame to beat the Cardinals in the 2012 NLCS.

Kansas City awaits the winner after completing its ALCS sweep of Baltimore earlier in the day. The wild-card Royals will host Game 1 of the World Series next Tuesday night.

Royals edge Orioles 2-1 to take 3-0 lead in ALCS

riggertRoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Moustakas had his eye on the ball from the moment it left Adam Jones’ bat, tracking it against the bright lights of Kauffman Stadium. When it settled into his glove and he tumbled into a dugout suite, a dozen fans were waiting to pick him right back up.

Just like Moustakas has picked up his team during its perfect postseason.

The third baseman with the four playoff homers dazzled with his glove Tuesday night. And when Billy Butler drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, the long-downtrodden Kansas City Royals were on their way to a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles and a commanding 3-0 lead in their American League Championship Series.

“It really did fire up the whole stadium,” Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said of his teammate’s circus catch. “Hats off to the fans in the dugout suite, pick him up and put him back on the field. That was great. ‘Moose’ finding ways to get it done.”

The entire team has found ways to get it done. The wild-card Royals have won 10 straight postseason games, including all seven this year in their first playoff appearance in 29 years.

The only thing that has slowed Kansas City so far was a rainout Monday.

“We’ve got a snowball effect going right now,” Butler said. “The confidence couldn’t be any higher. That’s when you come to the park each day, focus on the next pitch, focus on your job and just not be the guy to end the streak.”

Fresh off a combined three-hitter, Kansas City will send Jason Vargas to the mound for Game 4 on Wednesday, trying to advance to its first World Series since 1985. Miguel Gonzalez will go to the mound for the Orioles.

“It’s hard to take advantage of mistakes when they’re not making any,” Orioles first baseman Steve Pearce said. “This is tough, man. We’ve got one loss left. We’ve got to find a way to start pulling this out. We got to find somebody to get it done.”

The Orioles are the 34th team to trail 3-0 in a best-of-seven major league postseason series. The only team to come back and win was the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 ALCS against the Yankees, according to STATS.

“It’s been done before, so that gives you a chance,” Jones said. “We’ve won four games before. Obviously, not in this situation. But we’ve won four games, four games, four games. So start tomorrow, start in the first inning and get some runs on the board.”

The Royals’ Jeremy Guthrie and Orioles’ Wei-Yin Chen hooked up in a tense pitching duel for five innings Tuesday night, and the game was still 1-all when Chen gave up a leadoff single to Nori Aoki in the sixth. Hosmer followed with a one-out single to put runners on the corners, and Orioles manager Buck Showalter brought in hard-throwing reliever Kevin Gausman.

Butler greeted him with a fly ball to left field for the tiebreaking run — just the latest example of Kansas City doing all the little things right.

One of the best bullpens in baseball took care of the rest.

Winning pitcher Jason Frasor breezed through the sixth, and Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis nailed down the next two innings. Greg Holland worked a perfect ninth for his third save of the series, setting off a wild celebration in the stands.

In all, Kansas City pitchers retired the final 16 batters.

It was the 13th game to be decided by one run this postseason, matching the record set in 2011 and tied last year. Six games have gone to extra innings, including the Giants’ 5-4, 10-inning victory over the Cardinals hours earlier in the National League Championship Series.

“I wish I didn’t have so much stake in it,” Showalter said dryly. “I’d probably enjoy watching both teams play more than I do.”

After failing to take the lead in the first two games of the series, Baltimore managed to strike first this night, temporarily silencing a frigid, flag-waving capacity crowd.

It happened in the second inning, when Pearce and J.J. Hardy hit back-to-back doubles for a 1-0 lead. Guthrie wiggled out of the jam, though, and grinded through five innings against his former team in his first start since Sept. 26.

Chen matched him pitch for pitch until the fourth, when the Royals put together one of their quintessential innings: a pair of bloop singles, a walk and a tying RBI groundout.

The Royals played catch up with their gloves, too.

Moustakas made a diving grab to rob Pearce of a single in the fourth. Then in the sixth, he tracked that popup by Jones into foul territory, steadied himself at a railing near the dugout, then extended himself to catch the ball and tumbled into the stands.

“They were both tremendous plays,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.

The blue-clad crowd rose to its feet to give Moustakas a rousing cheer, and many fans were still standing when Butler drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the inning.

By the time the Royals’ big three of Herrera, Davis and Holland had closed it out, the Royals were on the verge of another postseason sweep.

“We’ve got to zone in on the task at hand,” Holland said. “They’re not going to lay down. We understand that.”

STATS AND STREAKS

Orioles DH Nelson Cruz had his streak of six straight multihit playoff games end. He was 0-for-4. … Pearce had been 0-for-9 in the series before his double in the second inning.

UP NEXT

Orioles: Gonzalez has not started since his final regular-season outing Sept. 28. “I’m going to try as best as possible to give our team a chance,” he said.

Royals: Vargas also has had a long stretch without a start, last taking the hill against the Angels in Game 1 of AL Division Series on Oct. 2. “I’ll be ready to go,” he said.

Missouri announces 2015 football schedule

riggertMizzouThe 2015 schedule for the University of Missouri football program has been released, as announced today by Mizzou Athletics, in conjunction with the Southeastern Conference.

The Tigers have six home games currently finalized for the 2015 campaign at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium, including a Thursday-night prime time game on Nov. 5th against Mississippi State set for an 8 p.m. (central time) kickoff on ESPN.  The Bulldogs, ranked #1 in the nation for the current season, will be making their first trip to Columbia since 1984, when Mizzou claimed a 47-30 win.

Other home games in 2015 include contests against Southeast Missouri State (Sept. 5), UCONN (Sept. 19), South Carolina (Oct. 3), Florida (Oct. 10) and Tennessee (Nov. 21).

Road contests are set against Arkansas State (Sept. 12), Kentucky (Sept. 26), Georgia (Oct. 17), Vanderbilt (Oct. 24) and Arkansas (Nov. 28).

A 12th game, most likely to be played on Nov. 14th, is still being finalized, with opponent and location information to be released at a later date.

The Thursday night game will be a unique mid-week nationally-televised opportunity as the Tigers will take on the Bulldogs.  It will be the third time Mizzou has hosted a Thursday-night game, with prior instances coming in 1992 (vs. Colorado) and 2009 (vs. Nebraska).  It will be one of three Thursday night games played by SEC teams in 2015 (the league has five Thursday night games in 2014).

“We are excited to have this schedule almost completed.  It’s been a long time in the works, but we’re pleased and grateful to everyone who has helped it come together to this point,” said Executive Associate Athletic Director Bryan Maggard, who oversees football scheduling.

“The Thursday night home game is certainly unique, and it’s a great opportunity to showcase Mizzou to a national audience,” said Maggard.  “The SEC asked both schools to consider it, and after we visited with campus and faculty leaders, we decided to go that route.  We will consider future Thursday opportunities if asked by the league, but only occasionally,” he said.
