Chiefs draft Auburn DE Dee Ford in first round

ChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nobody seemed to think that the Kansas City Chiefs were going to choose a defensive end with their first-round pick in the NFL draft Thursday night.

That included Dee Ford, the one they ultimately selected.

Despite glaring holes at wide receiver and in the defensive backfield, the Chiefs grabbed a potential replacement for Tamba Hali or Justin Houston by taking Ford, a pass-rushing specialist out of Auburn who they believe can make a smooth transition to outside linebacker.

“I’m definitely surprised it was Kansas City. I’m not surprised it was the first round,” Ford said. “I haven’t spoken to Kansas City as much. But in all honesty, all the vets I talked to in the NFL told me it would be a team I had not spoken to.”

That doesn’t mean Ford is unfamiliar with Kansas City. He said he’s a “big fan” of Hali, who turns 31 this season and is winding down his career, and that he hopes to learn from fellow pass rusher Houston, who is eligible for free agency after the season.

Reid declined to say the Chiefs were planning to replace one of their incumbents. Instead, he praised the flexibility that Ford gives the Chiefs, especially on passing downs.

“I think it’s more mixing him in with that group. You need as many of those guys as you can possibly get out there,” Reid said. “I can probably tell you if he wasn’t the quickest defensive lineman off the ball in this draft, he was the closest to it.”

Perhaps as fast as Jadeveon Clowney, who went first overall to Houston. In fact, Ford said at the scouting combine that he was a better prospect than the former South Carolina star.

The Chiefs nearly had a chance to land Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, who went one pick earlier to the Cleveland Browns. Manziel could have given the Chiefs some leverage in their ongoing negotiations with Alex Smith, who also will become a free agent after next season.

The Chiefs and Smith’s representatives have been talking about a long-term contract, but the two sides still appear far apart. There is no heir apparent already on the roster.

“When you’re sitting at the 23rd pick you’re looking at everybody. Absolutely, we checked the quarterbacks out,” Reid said. “But by no means did it have anything to do with Alex’s play or contract or anything else. That had nothing to do with it.”

The Chiefs traded their second-round pick to San Francisco last year in the deal that landed Smith, which means Kansas City won’t pick again until the third round. And with the draft as deep as it’s been in years, the Chiefs were open to trading down to acquire more selections.

“I would tell you the phone was ringing, probably for the kid that went before us,” Reid said. “They don’t tell you exactly who they want, but the phones were ringing.”

Ford will be moving from defensive end to outside linebacker in the Chiefs’ defensive scheme, and he’ll be asked to drop into pass coverage for the first time. But it is the same kind of switch that Hali made when he was drafted by Kansas City, and one that Reid is confident Ford will be able to make given his athleticism and his performance during the scouting process.

And while Ford is known for his pass-rushing ability, he is also confident that he will be able to defend the run — a requirement if he is to emerge as an every-down player.

“Relentless football player,” Reid said. “He’s going to give you an honest snap every snap. Tremendous motor, great attitude, all those intangibles are a real positive there, and I’ve said this before, your offensive line, defensive line, make everybody around them better. If they’re playing at a high level, it works out pretty well for you.”

Ford led the SEC with 10½ sacks last season, despite a nagging knee injury. He also had back surgery earlier in this career, though Reid said the Chiefs gave him a clean bill of health.

“Extremely high motor on the football field. Very intelligent player. He’s a concert pianist on top of being a heck of a football player,” Reid said. “We look forward to bringing him into our defense. You can’t have enough good pass rushers and Dee falls into that category.”

Kansas City loses pitchers duel at Seattle, 1-0

RoyalsSEATTLE (AP) — Hisashi Iwakuma scattered four hits over eight innings and Corey Hart hit an RBI single to lift the Seattle Mariners over the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Thursday night.

Seattle won for the 11th time in 14 games since losing eight straight from April 15-22.

Iwakuma (2-0) was making his second start after beginning the season on the disabled list with a strained tendon on the middle finger of his pitching hand. The All-Star right-hander struck out seven and walked none.

Fernando Rodney worked around a pair of walks in the ninth to earn his 10th save in 11 chances. The Mariners have shut out the Royals for 27 straight innings dating to September 2013.

Danny Duffy (1-3) gave up one run and two hits in six-plus innings. He has allowed two hits and a run in each of his first two starts this season after pitching out of the bullpen to begin the year.

Iwakuma has thrown 48 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings against AL Central teams, the second-longest streak by any pitcher against one division dating to 1974. Orel Hershiser tossed 55 straight scoreless innings against NL West opponents in 1988.

The Mariners pushed across the lone run in the third. Mike Zunino led off with a double for Seattle’s first hit and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Duffy intentionally walked Robinson Cano. Hart followed with a single up the middle.

Seattle batters have driven in runs three out of the six times opposing teams have intentionally walked Cano this season.

Kansas City managed just four singles and advanced a runner to second base only once during the first eight innings. The Royals had their best opportunity to score in the ninth when Rodney walked a pair, but the closer struck out Billy Butler and induced a game-ending groundout.

Shields, Hosmer lead Royals to second straight win at San Diego

RoyalsSAN DIEGO (AP) — James Shields scattered seven hits over seven innings, Eric Hosmer drove in a season-high four runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the San Diego Padres 8-0 Wednesday.

The Royals scored three times in the first and that was plenty for Shields (4-3). He struck out four, walked two and threw 118 pitches.

Shields won his fourth straight road start of the season. Since 2013, he is 14-4 in 24 road starts with a 2.00 ERA.

Two relievers finished for the Royals. The Padres were shut out for a major league-high sixth time this season. San Diego has lost six of eight overall.

Andrew Cashner (2-5) took the loss as he was again derailed by an anemic offense and shoddy defense.

Cashner, who lasted a season-low four innings, had trouble from the start. He threw 43 pitches in the first, hurt by a pair of errors from shortstop Everth Cabrera that led to two unearned runs.

Alcides Escobar reached when Cabrera misplayed his ground ball after Nori Aoki opened with a single. Hosmer hit a two-run single, Alex Gordon reached base two batters later when Cabrera mishandled his grounder and Danny Valencia followed with a broken-bat, RBI single.

Cashner ended the inning by getting Shields to ground out with the bases in a nine-pitch at-bat.

The Padres had a chance to cut into their deficit in the second when they got three hits. But Cameron Maybin was too aggressive rounding second base on an infield single, and Escobar slid in behind from shortstop, took Hosmer’s throw from first base and made the tag.

Padres manager Bud Black requested a review, but the call stood. It marked the first time in five appeals this season that Black had lost.

The Royals’ lead grew to 4-0 in the third when Gordon doubled and later scored on Mike Moustakas’ sacrifice fly.

The Padres tied a season high with three errors, and had a passed ball and wild pitch in allowing four unearned runs.

Benedictine men’s basketball announces 2014-2015 recruiting class

riggertBenedictine3Benedictine College men’s basketball coach Ryan Moody announced the signing of four new Ravens that will join the program for the 2014-15 school year.

Christian Hatterle from Bellevue West High School in Bellevue, Neb., Terryl Curry from Francis Howell Central High School in St Charles, Mo., Payton Heinen from Axtell High School in Axtell, and John Meyer from Shullsburg High School in Shullsburg, Wisc., will all join the Benedictine College basketball program as freshmen in fall 2014.

“We are excited to add these young men to our program,” Coach Moody said. “Each one of them is a high-character, quality individual that is committed to being the best student-athlete possible. They are a great fit for Benedictine College and we are excited they have chosen to be Ravens.”

(Bellevue West HS): Hatterle was a standout for the Nebraska Class A State Champions Bellevue West Thunderbirds (21-6) and head coach Doug Woodard earning Bellevue Leader Class A All-Metro first team, Omaha World Herald Honorable Mention All-Metro and Lincoln Journal Star Honorable Mention All-Metro. Hatterle averaged 12.5 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game and 1.7 assists per game.

Terryl Curry – Guard – 6-1 – St. Charles, Mo. (Francis Howell Central HS): Curry averaged 16.7 points per game for the Francis Howell Central Spartans and head coach Larry Anders and was named Gateway Athletics Conference South Division First Team.

Jayhawks to meet Florida again in SEC/Big 12 Challenge

riggertKUNational powers and defending regular-season men’s basketball champions in each of their respective conferences, Kansas and Florida will square off in the second SEC/Big 12 Challenge, Dec. 5 in historic Allen Fieldhouse, the two leagues and ESPN announced Wednesday.

The Kansas-Florida contest is one of two in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge that will pit preseason-ranked teams in the early ESPN.com “Fab 50” ratings. Kansas is at No. 4, while Florida is No. 7 in the early poll. No. 6 Texas will play at No. 1 Kentucky on Dec. 5 in the Challenge. Last season, the Big 12 won the Challenge by capturing wins in seven of the 10 meetings.

In last season’s inaugural Challenge, then-No. 19 Florida defeated then-No. 13 Kansas, 67-61, on Dec. 10 in Gainesville. The two teams would climb the national rankings for the remainder of the season with Florida at No. 1 the final four weeks of 2013-14 and Kansas as high as No. 5 on Feb. 24. Both teams won their regular-season conference championships and Florida won the SEC Tournament, as well. KU finished 25-10 and 14-4 in the 2013-14 season and entered the NCAA Tournament a No. 2 seed, while Florida went 36-3 overall, 18-0 in the SEC and was the overall No. 1 seed of the 2014 NCAA tourney.

Though there have only been five games in this series, the Kansas-Florida matchups have been highly touted. Kansas leads 3-2, with three of the five meetings being top-10 nationally-ranked contests. Four of the five meetings has seen at least one team ranked in the top 10.

In the first meeting, No. 5 Kansas defeated No. 6 Florida 69-63 in Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 7, 1994. KU was ranked No. 3 when the Jayhawks defeated the Gators 69-64 on Jan. 11, 1996, in Gainesville. No. 7 Florida bested No. 2 Kansas in the third meeting 83-73 on Nov. 29, 2003, in the consolation finals of the Preseason NIT at Madison Square Garden. Prior to last season’s meeting in Gainesville, No. 10 Kansas defeated top-ranked Florida 82-80 in overtime on Nov. 25, 2006, in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational. Florida went on to win its second-straight NCAA National Championship that season, while Kansas claimed the national title the following year in 2008.
