Kansas football announces coaching staff adjustments

riggertKUAn adjustment has been made in staff responsibilities within the Kansas football program, effective immediately. Rob Ianello will move to a new position as Director of Research. Reggie Mitchell will add the title of Recruiting Coordinator. Head coach Charlie Weis will take over the wide receiver position.

“I have decided to adjust our staff,” said Weis. “Reggie Mitchell will return to a position he is very familiar with as our recruiting coordinator. Rob Ianello will move to an off-field position as director of research, spending most of his time on recruiting. Coach (John) Reagan and I discussed several alternatives and have decided to have me handle the wide receiver position at this time.”

“Coach Weis and I discussed our approach moving forward,” said Reagan. “I decided, and we have agreed, that the best immediate answer is to have Coach Weis handle the wide receiver position.”

Mizzou All-American DE Michael Sam says he’s gay

MUMissouri All-American Michael Sam says he is gay, and the defensive end could become the first openly homosexual player in the NFL.

In interviews with ESPN, The New York Times and Outsports that were published Sunday, Sam said his teammates and coaches at Missouri have known since August.

“I am an openly, proud gay man,” he said.

The 255-pound Sam participated in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., last month after leading the SEC in sacks (11.5) and tackles for loss (19), and he is projected to be a mid-round NFL draft pick.

“It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be … I want to be a football player in the NFL,” he said in the interviews.

There have been numerous NFL players who have come out after their playing days, including Kwame Harris and Dave Kopay.

Last year, NBA player Jason Collins announced he was gay after the season. Collins was a free agent and has not signed with a new team this season. MLS star and U.S. national team player Robbie Rogers also came out a year ago.

Division III Willamette kicker Conner Mertens, a redshirt freshman, said last month he was bisexual.

“We admire Michael Sam’s honesty and courage,” the NFL said in statement. “Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in the NFL. We look forward to welcoming and supporting Michael Sam in 2014.”

Sam said many people at the college all-star game for NFL prospects seemed to know that he was gay.

“I didn’t realize how many people actually knew, and I was afraid that someone would tell or leak something out about me,” he told ESPN. “I want to own my truth. … No one else should tell my story but me.”

Before coming out to all his teammates and coaches, Sam said he told a few close friends and dated another Missouri athlete who was not a football player.

“Coaches just wanted to know a little about ourselves, our majors, where we’re from, and something that no one knows about you,” Sam said. “And I used that opportunity just to tell them that I was gay. And their reaction was like, ‘Michael Sam finally told us.'”

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said in a statement Sunday night he was proud of Sam and how he represented the program.

“Michael is a great example of just how important it is to be respectful of others, he’s taught a lot of people here first-hand that it doesn’t matter what your background is, or your personal orientation, we’re all on the same team and we all support each other,” Pinkel said. “If Michael doesn’t have the support of his teammates like he did this past year, I don’t think there’s any way he has the type of season he put together.”

Missouri linebacker Donovan Bonner has been a teammate of Sam’s for five years.

“We knew of his status for 5 years and not one team member, coach, or staff member said anything says a lot about our family atmosphere,” Bonner tweeted.

The rest of the half belonged to the Lions building an 11 point lead at 40-29 after an Aaron Ramirez layup with 38 second to play. Colbert capitalized on an old fashioned three point play with 20 second to play cutting the deficit to 40-32 at the half.

Cooper, Starzl lead Bearcats to big win over Lincoln, 97-78

Northwest2013riggertMake it 10 straight wins for the Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team as the Bearcats defeated Lincoln University Saturday, 97-78.

The Bearcats came out on fire in the first half, shooting 52 percent from the floor as they jumped out to an early lead.

DeShaun Cooper led all scorers in the first half with 15 points.

Early in the second half, Dillon Starzl put in his 1,000th career point three years, two months and 25 days after scoring his first bucket as a Bearcat.

“I was never really worried about it,” Starzl said on scoring his 1,000th point. “I was more concerned with winning the game. It’s a great accomplishment, I have loved my time here at Northwest, but I just need to keep contributing to the team’s success this season.”

The Blue Tigers kept the game close in the beginning of the second half trailing, at one point, by three. Northwest then turned on the offense and began to pull away.

Cooper had his second 30 point performance of the season, finishing with a career high 35 points.

Starzl finished the game with 14 points while pulling down three rebounds. Conner Crooker had 11 points while Grant Cozad had 10. Bryston Williams had 10 points with four assists and three steals.

The 10 game winning streak is the longest under head coach Ben McCollum. Northwest improved to 18-5 on the season and 13-1 in the MIAA. The Bearcats will head to Missouri Southern to take on the Lions Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Tigers come up short at Ole Miss, 91-88

MUOXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi guard Marshall Henderson does not have the green light to take a 3-point shot. He has no light.

“I heard some guy behind me in the front row telling me to shoot it,” said Henderson, who scored 29 points on eight 3-point shots in Saturday’s 91-88 win over Missouri. “That’s all I need to hear.”

The Rebels (16-7, 7-3 Southeastern Conference) needed everything Henderson provided — 10 of 18 from the field, 8 of 15 from 3-point range and five assists — to record what Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy admitted, “a game we absolutely had to have. Marshall hits big shots.”

Ole Miss enhanced their hopes for an NCAA Tournament bid with the win, with home dates remaining against Kentucky and Florida. The Rebels are 27-10 with a .729 winning percentage in SEC play since 2012, trailing only Florida for the league’s best mark.

The Rebels remained alone in third place in the league standings and won for the third time in four meetings with Missouri (16-7, 4-6) over the past two seasons. The past two wins for the Rebels were turned on the game’s final possession.

“Huge. Just huge. It’s the only time we play them (Missouri) during the regular season,” Henderson said. “They’re a quality club with a high RPI and we needed it. I was able to get some good looks, but we had big games from everybody today.”

Jarvis Summers and LaDarius White had 16 points apiece, while Anthony Perez added 11. The Rebels won the rebounding battle, 44-43, including game-high performances of 11 and 10 rebounds from Aaron Jones and Sebastian Saiz, respectively.

Despite trailing by as many as 17 points in the first half and 50-35 at halftime, Missouri put on a furious second half rally. Earnest Ross led the Tigers with 24 points, six rebounds and four assists and missed a 28-foot shot at the buzzer that could have forced overtime.

Ross was complemented by Jordan Clarkson with 23 points, Jabari Brown with 20 and Ryan Rossburg with 11, all in the second half.

“I thought the difference was our post players didn’t compete well in the first half and their press bothered us,” Missouri coach Frank Haith said.

“In the second half, we took better care of the basketball and our effort was there.”

The Tigers pulled within two points on four occasions, but Henderson responded three times with a 3-point shot or an assist. Missouri’s made another late surge to get within 79-78 on a 3-point shot by Brown with 3:18 left.

Ole Miss outscored Missouri 6-0 in the following minute, all by Summers, and built a seemingly insurmountable 91-83 lead with 19 seconds remaining. Missouri scrambled within 91-88 and forced a turnover with 0.9 remaining, setting up a final opportunity for Ross.

“There were times I felt like we were just blowing them out by the way we were shooting,” Henderson said. “Then you’d look up and they were right there. Every game comes down to the wire for us. We embrace hard. We know it’s going to be that way.”

The loss was the third straight for the Tigers, who have lost consecutively to the top three SEC teams — Kentucky, Florida and Ole Miss. Despite the loss, Missouri remains a factor in the title chase with five of the next seven games at home.

Ole Miss shot 50 percent (29 of 58) from the field and 48.3 percent (14 of 29) from 3-point range. Missouri shot 47.5 percent (28 of 59) from the field and hit 11 3-point shots, led by Ross with five.

Missouri Western responded nicely going on a 10-1 tying the score at 23 after a Kyrsten Crawford layup with 5:09 left in the half. Lindenwood outscored the Griffons by four the rest of the frame taking the 34-30 lead at the half.

No. 8 Kansas extends Big 12 lead with win over West Virginia

KULAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Every time West Virginia coach Bob Huggins looked to the scorer’s table, Kansas coach Bill Self was getting ready to send another line change into the game.

You see, depth is a luxury for the eighth-ranked Jayhawks. It’s a liability for the Mountaineers.

So as the fouls began to pile up Saturday, Kansas was able to keep shuffling fresh bodies into the game. That allowed the defending Big 12 champions to bide their time until their starters could take over down the stretch, spurring them on to an 83-69 victory.

Andrew Wiggins finished with 19 points and Wayne Selden Jr. added 17, but most of that came after reserves such as Tarik Black, Frank Mason and Jamari Traylor had provided a spark.

“There were a couple starters that obviously didn’t play with the energy they should,” Self said, “and you need your best players playing their best. The reason they start is they’re your best players. But we didn’t have a drop-off at all.”

Black finished with 11 points, Mason had five points and five assists, and Traylor was 3 for 3 from the field for the Jayhawks (18-5, 9-1 Big 12), who honored the 40th anniversary of their 1974 Final Four team by taking a two-game lead over surprising Texas in the conference race.

The 15th-ranked Longhorns on Saturday lost to Kansas State, which will host the Jayhawks on Monday night. Kansas routed the Wildcats 86-60 on Jan. 11.

“I feel like going in, we’re expecting the worst, expecting a hostile environment, expecting not to get any calls,” Selden said, “but we’ll battle through it.”

Juwan Staten scored 22 points and Eron Harris had 17 for West Virginia, which dealt with foul trouble nearly the entire game. At one point, the Mountaineers had five players with four fouls apiece, and Brandon Watkins and Devin Williams eventually fouled out.

Still, the Mountaineers hung around until late in the game.

They closed within 69-65 on two free throws by Harris, who briefly left after turning his ankle earlier in the game. Another free throw by Staten a few minutes later got them within 72-66 with 3:49 to go, silencing another packed crowd at Allen Fieldhouse.

That’s when Joel Embiid, the Jayhawks’ talented 7-foot freshman, scored in the paint. Naadir Tharpe drained a 3-pointer on their next trip down the court, and Selden sliced into the lane for a layup that made it 77-66 and forced Huggins to call a timeout.

Just like that, a nip-and-tuck game began turning into a blowout.

“We just didn’t make any open shots,” said Huggins, who has never beaten Kansas in seven tries with Cincinnati, Kansas State and now the Mountaineers.

“Their rebounding at the foul line hurt us,” he said. “They go 1 for 2 from the foul line and then offensive rebounded at the foul line and score. Those are the things that really hurt you.”

The first half was far more entertaining than the second, when the whistles really began. Kansas raced to an early lead, the Mountaineers answered with a trio of 3-pointers from Harris, and the Jayhawks slowly crept out to another lead when West Virginia suddenly went cold.

The Mountaineers didn’t make a field goal over the final 7:36 of the first half, allowing Kansas to take a 43-36 lead on Wiggins’ buzzer-beating dunk.

The superstar freshman did most of his damage in the second half by driving to the basket and getting fouled, finishing 7 of 10 from the free throw line — he was 6 of 14 from the field.

“I tried to be aggressive,” Wiggins said, “get into the lane, tried to get contact and get to the foul line, and get my teammates involved.”

The teams combined for 50 fouls and shot 65 free throws in a game that rarely went more than a minute without a whistle. More than once, multiple fouls were called on one trip down the court, turning long stretches of the second half into a free throw shooting contest.

The Jayhawks wound up 23 of 34 from the free throw line. West Virginia was 25 of 31.

“We just had some guys that didn’t play very well,” Huggins said, “which happens.”
