Southwest Baptist, Lincoln leaving the MIAA in football

riggertMIAAThe Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced jointly Thursday that the two NCAA Division II conferences have entered into a Strategic Conference Football Scheduling Alliance, which will enable MIAA members Lincoln University and Southwest Baptist University to join the GLVC in the sport of football only.

The proposed four-year agreement, which is slated to begin in 2014, will give both Lincoln and Southwest Baptist associate member status within the GLVC.  Each school will remain full active members of the MIAA in all other sports and will continue those MIAA competitive schedules.

The Strategic Conference Football Scheduling Alliance provides scheduling stability and non-conference flexibility for both conferences moving forward, while also addressing two major scheduling goals for each league, including:

1. The desire of Lincoln and Southwest Baptist to obtain more flexibility with their non-conference schedule;

2. A scheduling model for the MIAA that would allow all conference schools to play one another; thus crowning a true league champion at year’s end;

3. The GLVC’s interest in growing and stabilizing its football membership;

4. A schedule for the GLVC that addresses challenges current membership has faced with non-conference scheduling.

“I am excited about this strategic alliance and believe it is a benefit to all MIAA institutions,” MIAA Commissioner Bob Boerigter said. “Grant Teaff (Executive Director of the American Football Coaches Association) has encouraged Division II conferences to work together to help grow and sustain Division II football. GLVC Commissioner Jim Naumovich and I believe that this will help meet football scheduling challenges in both conferences.”

Commissioner Naumovich agrees.

“Since beginning our sponsorship of football in 2012, our coaches and administrators have advocated for an increase in conference games, which then enables our schools to be both flexible and selective when it comes to non-conference scheduling,” said Naumovich.  “The Strategic Conference Football Scheduling Alliance not only meets our needs, but the addition of Lincoln and Southwest Baptist also gives us two programs located within the conference footprint that have been common opponents, and in some cases, rivals, to our current football schools.  We are thrilled to embark on this unique venture with Commissioner Boerigter and the MIAA.”

Lincoln is located in Jefferson City, Mo., while Southwest Baptist resides in Bolivar, Mo., just 115 miles away.  Five of the current GLVC football schools – Missouri S&T (Rolla, Mo.), Truman State (Kirksville, Mo.), William Jewell (Liberty, Mo.), Quincy (Quincy, Ill.), and McKendree (Lebanon, Ill.) – are within a three-hour drive from Lincoln and a four-hour trip from Southwest Baptist.

The GLVC’s two newest associate members are excited about the changes.

“Our alliance with the Great Lakes Valley Conference allows our football program to play similar size schools within the footprint of our institution,” Lincoln Athletic Director Betty Kemmna said. “As a Historically Black College or University, it was our desire to have the opportunity to play other HBCU institutions that share our same mission. This alliance will enable us to schedule a few non-conference games within our schedule and it allows us to renew former rivalries with other HBCU’s and still play for a conference championship.”

“We are very excited about this arrangement,” Southwest Baptist Athletics Director Mike Pitts said. “It’s a win-win-win for the MIAA, the GLVC and SBU. Our fans are used to seeing us play the football schools of the GLVC. We are looking forward to great competition and good rivalries in football with the GLVC colleges and universities, while maintaining full membership in the MIAA with all other sports. We appreciate, very, very much – the leadership of Commissioners Boerigter and Naumovich over the last few weeks that turned this great idea into reality.”

The MIAA is expected to release its 2014 schedule by week’s end, while the GLVC will announce its new-look schedule at a later date.

Bearcat soccer gets shutout win at Graceland

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team managed its second straight shutout victory Tuesday as the Bearcats defeated Graceland University on Tuesday, 1-0. In the victory, senior Kelsey Adams etched her name into the Northwest goalkeeping record books.

Adams had nine saves in Tuesday’s victory, giving her 344 in her career, which surpassed the old record of 339 set by Kathie Leach (1999-01).

“I am very excited about the accomplishment,” Adams said. “The record is not just mine, it’s the whole team’s because I could not have done this by myself.”

Adams, who hails from Savannah, Mo., entered the season tied for second on the all-time saves list, also nabbed her 11th career clean sheet, moving her to second on the all-time shutout list for Northwest.

“Kelsey was amazing today,” said head coach Tracy Hoza. “She is an absolute pleasure to coach and I know coach Lampa and Kelsey have worked extremely hard the last few years to get to this point. Kelsey is one of the best athletes we have here at Northwest.”

Northwest found the back of the net when Anna Holden notched her second goal of the season in the 56th minute to go up 1-0.

One goal was all they needed as the Bearcat defense continued their excellent play, giving up only one goal in the last three games. The talented back line stepped up again Tuesday, not allowing a goal and grabbing their second shutout of the season.

Northwest improves its 2013 record to 3-4-1, 1-1 with the victory. The Bearcats will remain on the road as they head to Tahlequah, Okla., to take on Northeastern State in an MIAA matchup Friday with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Royals sign manager Ned Yost to a two-year extension

RoyalsThe vast rebuilding job that Ned Yost inherited as the manager of the Kansas City Royals was strikingly similar to the one he took on when he was hired by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The difference this time is that Yost will have a chance to stick around.

The Royals and Yost agreed to a two-year contract extension Tuesday after wrapping up an 86-76 season, the best finish for the franchise in 24 years. Yost’s contract was set to expire after the season, though both sides had expressed a desire for the manager to remain on board.

“Our main goal is to win the World Series, but we took a major step this year,” Yost said. “We finished 10 games over .500. That was huge for us. That was a big step.”

The next big step is to make the playoffs, something that Yost had the Brewers on the verge of when he was fired in 2008. He eventually landed in Kansas City and became the interim manager in 2010, and then lost more than 90 games each of his first two full seasons in charge.

His biggest task then was to help develop one of the youngest rosters in baseball, and the work began to pay off this year. The Royals rebounded from a disastrous 8-20 May to go 43-27 after the All-Star break, and weren’t eliminated from wild-card contention until their penultimate series.

“Milwaukee was a great experience for me, like May was a good experience for our team,” Yost said. “I’m thankful for that opportunity because it made me stronger. It made me a better manager. The May we went through, it made us better, it made us stronger, because we endured it, and we were better for it the rest of the year.”

Yost, who is 741-831 in 10 seasons as a manager, held off on discussing a new contract until after the season. It came together quickly on Monday.

“When you have something good you need to stick with it,” outfielder Alex Gordon said after the final game, “and I think that’s what we have. We have a good manager that gels well with the guys on this team and we all have a good relationship.”

Yost’s two-year deal creates a strange situation in the organization in that general manager Dayton Moore is only under contract through next season. Moore declined to discuss whether he will also seek an extension this offseason, saying only that he’s “secure” with his situation.

“I’m at peace about where I am and what we’ve done,” Moore said. “There’s an emotion and an expectation and excitement around this group of players, and in a small way, I feel like we’ve won the World Series, because we have a fan base that’s excited.”

Now that Yost is under contract, Moore will soon turn his attention to putting together a roster for next season. Most of the lineup will return intact, led by promising young players such as first baseman Eric Hosmer and catcher Salvy Perez. But plenty of questions remain, starting with right field and what was one of the best starting rotations in the big leagues.

The Royals cobbled together right field when Jeff Francoeur fizzled out, and David Lough and Justin Maxwell were platooning there late in the season. But Yost and Moore both have indicated they would like to add a bat with power to the lineup, and right field is the natural fit.

In the rotation, Ervin Santana and Bruce Chen are both eligible for free agency. Santana may have priced himself out of the Royals with the best season of his career, but Moore said that he anticipates having the resources necessary to make a competitive bid to keep both pitchers.

If that doesn’t happen, Moore said that youngsters Yordano Ventura, Danny Duffy and Kyle Zimmer are prepared to compete for a starting job in spring training.

“Every team has holes. We certainly are not immune to that,” Moore said. “We’ll look at the areas where we can improve, but you can only improve with talent and opportunities available to you, and I have no idea what opportunities are going to be available going forward.”

Moore did say that he expects the Royals’ payroll, which was a franchise-record $81,241,725 on opening day, to remain the same or perhaps even increase next season.

“You have a deep-pitted feeling in your stomach every year you’re not in the playoffs,” Moore said. “We want that for our fan base. We want that for our players in the worst way. So we’re going to continue to work to press the right buttons.”

Former Griffon RB Michael Hill signed to Packers’ 53-man active roster

MWSUThe Green Bay Packers have signed former Missouri Western running back Michael Hill to the active roster from the practice squad and signed WR Reggie Dunn to the practice squad. The transactions were announced Monday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound rookie was signed to Green Bay’s practice squad on Sept. 2. Hill entered the NFL as a non-drafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers and played in all four preseason contests for the club in 2013. He finished his collegiate career as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 4,969 yards and 35 TDs on 828 carries (6.0 avg.).

Hill didn’t know about his “promotion” until he showed up for work on Monday, saw his name on the depth chart, and then went into the meeting room to find a contract waiting for his signature.

“I just signed my contract right there,” Hill said. “It was awesome.”

Hill said he believes he has caught the coaches’ eyes in Green Bay with his pass-protection skills. That’s what the San Diego Chargers coaching staff liked best about him when they released him, he said, and it’s an area of strength he has carried forward from his college days at Missouri Western.

“I actually called the protection calls for our offense and I communicated with the linemen,” Hill said. “It was just us communicating together, so that really prepared me for this.”
