Bearcat baseball gets swept by Arkansas-Monticello

riggertNorthwestThe Northwest Missouri State baseball team dropped the final two games of its season opening series Saturday against Arkansas-Monticello, falling 8-7 in game one and 11-1 in the finale.

The Bearcats stand at 0-3 on the young season, as the Boll Weevils improve to 4-3 overall. Northwest continues its season opening road swing as they open MIAA play next weekend at Northeastern State.

In game one the Bearcats again fell behind early when UAM pushed one run across in the first inning. However unlike Friday, Northwest rallied limiting the damage to just one run before tying the game in the top half of the second.

The Boll Weevils would hold a 6-1 until the fifth when Northwest would battle back. Scratching away at the UAM lead, Northwest took the lead in the top of the seventh when Luke Lawyer doubled to left giving the Bearcats a 7-6 lead.

A solid pitching effort from Marcus Garrett and Chase Anderson helped Northwest hold the lead as the pair scattered nine hits over 7.2 innings and combined for six strikeouts.

In the bottom of the eighth UAM would tie the game, before a walk-off double ended the game giving the Boll Weevils the 8-7 comeback win.

Four different Bearcats recorded multiple hits while Eric McGlauflin led Northwest going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Game two belonged to the Boll Weevils as they scored 11 runs on 12 hits ending the game via run rule in the eighth inning.

Ryker Fox picked up the loss going four innings and scattering four hits while allowing just four runs. All four runs came in the first inning however before the junior settled in to pitch three scoreless innings.

Although a strong outing on the mound for the Bearcat hurlers in the finale, the UAM pitching staff was even better allowing just two hits over eight innings and striking out six.

Charlie Krueger and Ryan Abernathy recorded the only two hits for Northwest in the loss.

Bearcat baseball begins with loss at Arkansas-Monticello

riggertNorthwestIt was not the ideal start for the Northwest Missouri State baseball team as they fell in the season opener 19-7 to Arkansas-Monticello Friday afternoon.

The Bearcats fell to 0-1, as their bats picked up where they left off in 2012. Unfortunately their pitching struggled in the opener as the Boll Weevils improved to 2-3 on the young season.

UAM got off to a hot start in the bottom of the first, as the Boll Weevils batted around en route to an eight run first inning. Bearcat starter Blane Reutter was unable to get out of the first frame being charged with seven earned runs in 0.2 innings of work.

Being faced with a 10-run deficit the Bearcat offense came alive in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles from Luke Lawyer and Jon Pomatto set the stage for Brandon Huske who singled through the right side scoring both Lawyer and Pomatto.

One batter later, Ryan Abernathy scored on a sacrifice fly from Eric Swain after Abernathy had singled to load the bases for Huske. Abernathy led the Bearcats going 4-for-5 with two doubles in the loss.

After holding UAM scoreless in the bottom of the third frame the Boll Weevils’ offense pounded out six more hits to push their lead to 16-3. Austin Warren gave way to Pat Brady who managed to calm the UAM bats in 2.1 innings of work.

The Bearcats would again chip away in the seventh inning as JJ Baccari blasted a 3-run homer to right pulling the deficit to 19-6. However the UAM lead would be too much as the Bearcats were only able to scratch one more run across in the top of the ninth for a 19-7 final score.

Along with Baccari’s three RBIs, Huske also finished the afternoon with three RBIs pushing the final run across in the ninth. As a team the Bearcats finished with 10 hits, but left five on base and also committed three errors.

Jace Anderson and Tyler Barth combined to hold UAM scoreless over the final 2.1 innings.

UAM finished with 18 hits and left nine men on base in the win. Seven different Boll Weevils finished with multiple hits including three players with three hits. Bobby Bryan picked up the win for UAM going six innings and scattering five hits.

The Bearcats and Boll Weevils return to the diamond Saturday for a double-header starting at 11 a.m. Both games Saturday will be two nine inning games.

Missouri’s rally comes up short at Texas A&M

MUFabyon Harris had 17 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, to help Texas A&M to a 70-68 victory over No. 21 Missouri on Thursday night.

The loss dropped the Tigers (16-6, 5-4 Southeastern Conference) to 0-5 in true road games. They have won three games at neutral sites this season.

Laurence Bowers was wide open when he hit a 3-pointer to give Missouri its first lead of the game, 68-67, with 53 seconds left.

Harris turned it over on Texas A&M’s next possession, but Phil Pressey gave it right back with a turnover to set up the winning score for A&M (14-8, 4-5).

Ray Turner blocked a shot by Keion Bell with 2 seconds left to secure the win.

Alex Oriakhi led the Tigers with 15 points.

Missouri used an 11-1 run to tie it at 63-all with about 2 minutes left. Missouri’s first seven points of that run were on free throws before Pressey capped it with two short jumpers on consecutive possessions.

The teams exchanged baskets before Elston Turner made it 67-65 with a long jumper before the shot by Bowers.

Elston Turner added 15 points for A&M and Kourtney Roberson had 14.

Pressey scored 13 for Missouri and Bell had 12.

Missouri was coming off an 81-59 win over Vanderbilt, and is a perfect 13-0 at home this year. But the Tigers can’t find a way to win on the road.

They had 16 turnovers on Thursday which led to 22 points by the Aggies.

They were down by 15 points with about 14 minutes left before a 15-6 run got them within 58-52 with less than 8 minutes to play. Texas A&M had three turnovers and didn’t score for a more than a 3-minute stretch.

Harris hit a 3-pointer before Oriakhi was called for a foul and then charged with a technical after a scuffle with Harris for a rebound. Elston Turner made one of the free throws to push the lead to 62-52.

The Tigers opened the second half with a turnover by Bowers, which led to a dunk by Ray Turner. They would commit three more before they made their first basket of the second half – a 3 by Earnest Ross with about 15 1-2 minutes remaining.

They had four free throws in that stretch as A&M added 12 points, mostly off Missouri’s miscues to extend the lead to 48-34 before the 3 by Ross.

The Aggies used an 11-2 run to push the lead to 32-19 but Missouri used an 11-4 run to cut its halftime deficit to 36-30.

Nebraska & Colorado to renew football rivalry with four-game series

NebraskaNebraska will renew its rivalry on the gridiron with a long-time Big Eight and Big 12 opponent, as the Huskers have signed a contract to play four games against the University of Colorado between 2018 and 2024.

The border rivals will first meet in Lincoln on Sept. 8, 2018, before a return matchup in Colorado on Sept. 7, 2019. Colorado will also play host to the Huskers on Sept. 9, 2023, with the Buffs returning to Memorial Stadium for a matchup on Sept. 7, 2024.

The games with Colorado will be the first in the series since both schools left the Big 12 Conference following the 2010-11 athletic season, with Nebraska moving to the Big Ten Conference and Colorado to the Pac-12 Conference. The teams last met in the regular-season finale in 2010, and that meeting marked the 63rd consecutive year the two schools had met on the gridiron.

“There is a lot of great history between Nebraska and Colorado on the football field, so I think this will be an outstanding series for both schools,” Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini said. “I think our fans will enjoy the matchups, particularly those in Western Nebraska who can make the short drive out to the games in Colorado.”

Overall, Nebraska holds a 49-18-2 advantage in the all-time series between the schools, including a 26-8 record against the Buffs in Lincoln. Nebraska won the final three meetings against Colorado from 2008 to 2010, and owns a 15-4 record against CU since 1992.

The 2019 game at Colorado gives Nebraska three scheduled non-conference games in that season, joining previously announced home contests against South Alabama and Northern Illinois. The matchups in 2018, 2023 and 2024 are the first scheduled games of those seasons for Nebraska.

Colorado is one of two long-time conference foes Nebraska has recently agreed to play in a non-conference series. Nebraska announced in November that it has agreed to a home-and-home series with Oklahoma in 2021 and 2022, with the first matchup in Norman and the 2022 game at Memorial Stadium.

“We are pleased to add another quality opponent to our future non-conference schedule,” Nebraska Associate A.D. for Football Jeff Jamrog said. “It is great to have future games with both Colorado and Oklahoma, two of our long-time rivals in the Big Eight and Big 12 conferences. Coach Osborne, Shawn Eichorst and Mike Bohn (Colorado A.D.) all put a lot of work into making this series happen, and it is good to have this finalized.”
