Royals sign four more players to Minor League contracts

The Kansas City Royals announced Friday that the club has signed four additional players to minor league contracts for the 2013 season.  The club plans to announce Major League Spring Training invitations at a later date.

Right-handed pitcher Anthony Ortega, 27, is currently pitching for Tiburones de La Guaira in the Venezuelan Winter League, recording a 1-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in 16 relief appearances.  The 6-footer from Miranda, Venezuela, who made three starts for the Angels in 2009, is 26-31 with a 4.41 ERA in 118 career minor league games, including 82 starts.  Ortega did not pitch during the 2012 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

34-year-old right-handed pitcher Brian Sanches returns to the Royals organization after nearly 10 with other clubs.  Sanches was the Royals’ second-round selection in 1999 out of Lamar University.  He pitched in the Kansas City system until August 26, 2003 when he was traded to San Diego for outfielder Rondell White.  Sanches was then sent to Philadelphia in a trade on April 1, 2004.  The 6-foot-1 Nederland, Texas native has made 195 career appearances, all but two in relief, in the Majors with the Phillies (2006-07, 2012), Nationals (2008) and Marlins (2009-11), recording a 13-7 record with a 3.75 ERA in 235.0 innings.

Left-handed pitcher Atahualpa Severino, 28, posted a 3-0 record with three saves and a 2.81 ERA in 46 relief stints for Syracuse, Washington’s Triple-A affiliate, in 2012.  Born in Cotui, Dominican Republic, Severino saw his only Major League action in 2011 with the Nationals, recording a 1-0 record with a 3.86 ERA in six games.

Infielder Brandon Wood, 27, spent 2012 at Triple-A Colorado Springs in the Rockies organization, batting .259 with 10 home runs and 64 RBI on 119 games.  The former top prospect of the Los Angeles Angels has played in 272 Major League contests since his debut with the Angels as a 22-year-old in 2007.  He is a career .186 hitter with 18 home runs for the Angels (2007-11) and Pirates (2011).  The 2003 first-round selection (23rd overall), who has connected for at least 20 home runs in five minor league seasons including a California League-record 43 in 2005, came up as a shortstop and third baseman, but has since appeared at first base and in the outfield.

Northwest basketball teams sign three players to NLI

The Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team announced the addition of Brett Dougherty for the 2013-14 season Thursday at the early signing period.

Dougherty helped lead Papillion-La Vista High School to a 23-4 mark last season and a trip to the Nebraska High School Final Four earning all-tournament team honors. As a junior he averaged 13.5 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game to earn all-state and all-metro honors.

“Brett is a great addition for us,” fourth-year Head Coach Ben McCollum said. “He had a tremendous junior season and helped lead his high school team to a Final Four appearance. We were very impressed with him this summer on the AAU circuit and he is primed for a great senior year at Papillion-La Vista under Coach Ryan.

Brett fits the mold of quality and high character kids that we like in our program. His athleticism, toughness, & feel for the game will make him a solid player in our program for years to come.”

Northwest is 1-0 on the young season and coming off a MIAA Championship and NCAA tournament appearance. The Bearcats head to the Hillyard Classic Friday and Saturday in St. Joseph.

Head Coach Mark Kellogg inked two basketball players at the early signing period for the 2013-14 season, the first-year Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball coach announced Thursday.

Ashley Guenther, from Independence, Mo., and Morgan Dittberner, from Louisville, Neb., announced intents to sign with the Bearcat women’s basketball team.

“We tried to put pieces together that complement each other, our current team and our future,” Kellogg said. “In this class we have the size, speed and athleticism that will give us the needed depth to compete for championships. This signing class is the epitome of a student-athlete, they are unbelievable people and their work ethic and self-motivation will serve our program well both on and off the court. Both are young ladies mature beyond their years.”

Guenther was an all-conference forward at Truman High as a junior earning all-district and all-area honors. The 5-11 Guenther averaged 10 points per game and five rebounds helping her team to a 21-5 mark.

“Ashley is a versatile player who really understands how to play basketball,” Kellogg said. “She is aggressive and vocal and she’s incredibly passionate about the sport. Athletically, Ashley brings us size and the ability to score in a variety of ways. Her gift, though, is her mobility on the court. We also see her as being a good defender due to her athleticism and length.

She will flourish in our up-tempo style of play and has the ability to score inside and out. Her motor just never stops. She will really shine in our system and be a vital part of this programs rise to success.”

Ditteberner enters her senior year at Louisville High School after averaging 12 points per game as the teams scoring leader and setting school records in three-pointers in a season and blocks in a game. The 6-0 forward has been all-conference and two-time all-state selection. She has also been an all-conference and all-state volleyball player at LHS.

“Morgan is a kid that everybody calls a pure shooter, but what she really is an unassuming scorer,” commented Kellogg. “She’s a better passer and creator than anybody gives her credit. She is a smooth, scoring wing who can really shoot the basketball and just knows how to play the game.

She has a great feel on the court for what is going on around her. Her frame allows her to score in a myriad of ways. And though her accuracy beyond the arc is what defenders will have to take away, she can beat you with her strength and versatility inside the paint as well. Morgan is incredibly passionate about the game of basketball and a relentless competitor. She will have a great career here at Northwest.”

The two signings are the first at the early period for Kellogg who has helped guide the Bearcats to a 2-0 start.

“We feel so good about these two athletes,” Kellogg said. “Each brings not only an intense competitive desire to our program but an intense passion for Northwest Missouri State University as well. They’re a special duo.”

Kansas rallies from halftime deficit to defeat Chattanooga

Bill Self dared Ben McLemore to be more aggressive Thursday night.

If the freshman guard hadn’t heeded the challenge, seventh-ranked Kansas could have left the court inside Allen Fieldhouse with consecutive losses for the first time in ages.

McLemore wound up with 25 points and eight rebounds, and teamed with Elijah Johnson to trigger a big second-half charge, allowing the Jayhawks to escape with a 69-55 victory over Chattanooga.

“I just wanted to get my teammates involved, too,” said McLemore, who added three assists, all despite dislocating his finger twice in the second half. “I just came in tonight with the mindset of being aggressive, like coach wants me to be every night.”

The Jayhawks (2-1), coming off a loss Tuesday night to Michigan State, got off to a sluggish start against the Mocs, and still trailed 42-30 in the opening minutes of the second half.

Jeff Withey began their comeback with a basket inside, Johnson ripped a 3-pointer and McLemore slammed down the first of back-to-back highlight-reel dunks to trigger a 27-4 run over the next 12-plus minutes. Kansas merely had to go through the motions down the stretch to wrap up the win.

“Ben showed a glimpse of his athletic ability tonight,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “Defenses are going to be designed to stop Ben, and we don’t know how to run offense yet. We’re still trying to figure it out, and to me that was pretty impressive tonight.”

Farad Cobb was just as impressive: He was 6 of 7 from beyond the arc in the first half, and added another 3-pointer in the second half to finish with 31 points for Chattanooga (1-1).

“They just locked us up defensively,” Chattanooga coach John Shulman said. “They came back and made some shots. Once you make a shot, it kind of changes how everything looks.”

Kansas managed to extend the nation’s third-longest home-court winning streak to 25 games despite having more turnovers (9) than field goals (8) in the waning minutes of the first half.

That’s when things were still tenuous for the Jayhawks.

And when Cobb couldn’t miss.

The freshman guard made his first 3-pointer in the opening minutes, and then after a miss, connected on five straight to finish off the half. Two of them came on consecutive possessions just before the break that helped lift Chattanooga to a 36-28 lead.

The halftime deficit was Kansas’ largest at home to a non-conference opponent since 2005.

Self, whose hallmark over the years has been gritty, in-your-shorts defense, was steaming on the sideline as he blew through just about all his timeouts trying to get Cobb to cool down.

“It’s not a good feeling, period,” Johnson said. “I don’t really like for people to come into the Fieldhouse and have a game like that. It doesn’t happen too much.”

Chattanooga stayed hot early in the second half, getting 3-pointers from Z Mason and Ronrico White to extend the lead to 42-30. The Mocs were 10 of 16 from beyond the arc at that point.

That’s when Kansas finally buckled down on defense, let loose on offense, and gave another packed crowd inside Allen Fieldhouse a reason to jump to its feet.

McLemore’s first dunk during the surge prompted a timeout by Chattanooga coach John Shulman. After the Jayhawks forced a shot-clock violation when the game resumed, McLemore hopped on his pogo stick along the baseline and skied to grab a lob by Johnson for another dunk.

“He’s so explosive,” Shulman said. “He hangs up there for a while.”

McLemore was on the giving end on the next possession, tossing up the pass for Travis Releford to finish off a dunk, and Shulman frantically called another timeout.

Johnson’s 3-pointer finally gave Kansas a 44-43 lead, its first since it was 2-0. McLemore added a breakaway dunk, Naadir Tharpe buried a 3, and Johnson connected with McLemore again for an alley-oop dunk. By the time Withey took a feed from McLemore for a dunk and then added a foul shot, the Jayhawks had suddenly built a 57-46 lead.

“We just got on a roll,” McLemore said, “and we took it from there.”

The Jayhawks cruised down the stretch, outscoring the Mocs 41-19 in the second half. They only committed four turnovers after the break while forcing Chattanooga into 12.

“I thought the first half was the worst we’ve played, and the second half was the best we’ve played all year,” Self said. “One thing that I do know, we’re not good enough to play 80 percent or 90 percent. We have to play 100 percent every night. When we do that, we’re pretty good.”

“We filled three important needs for the future and are bringing in the high-caliber young men that our staff and Missouri fans have come to expect,” Haith said. “These young guys are high-character, high-motor players. They come from strong families and great programs and they expect to win. Athleticism was a big key for us, especially with our move to the Southeastern Conference. Johnathan (Williams) and Torren (Jones) are active bigs and can really change ends of the floor in a hurry. Wes is a talented point guard that can push the ball and create. I really like the makeup of this class.

“I also want to note the great work of our staff,” Haith continued. “Tim (Fuller), Dave (Leitao) and Rick (Carter) are second-to-none with their evaluations and preparation. Our staff puts in countless hours during the recruiting process and I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize their efforts.”

Kansas signs Wichita prep Frankamp to National Letter of Intent

It officially became official as do-it-all guard Conner Frankamp has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men’s basketball at Kansas, head coach Bill Self announced Wednesday.

A 6-foot-0, 160-pound, Wichita, Kan., sharpshooter, Frankamp verbally committed to Kansas during his sophomore season at Wichita North High School. Rivals.com rates Frankamp the No. 30 player in the class of 2013 and the best player in the state of Kansas. Scout.com has Frankamp with a four-star rating and as the ninth-best point guard in this year’s class.

“Conner comes as no major surprise because he’s been committed for quite some time,” Self said. “I think Conner is one of the best guards we have recruited since we’ve been here. He can score. He’s sneaky athletic and can play the one and the two and will be a great combo guard in our system.”

As a junior last season, Frankamp averaged 32.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game at Wichita North for coach Gary Squires. The Redskins advanced to the 2012 state quarterfinals with a 15-8 record and Frankamp earned All-State honors for the second straight season.

With 1,639 career points, Frankamp is 538 points from becoming the Wichita City League all-time leading scorer. He would need to average roughly 28 points a game to surpass current KU freshman Perry Ellis’ record of 2,231 points set from 2009-12 at Wichita Heights High School.

“His high school career has been stellar playing for Gary Squires and his father (Marty) at Wichita North,” Self said. “He should become the all-time leading scorer in Wichita, replacing Perry who just set the record just last year. We know he can score.”

Frankamp also has international experience as this past summer he led the U17 USA Basketball team to the gold medal at the FIBA World Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania. Frankamp led the Americans in scoring by averaging 14.1 points per game during the FIBA Championships.

“With USA basketball he did everything,” Self said. “He played on the ball, off the ball and he was the leading scorer on the under 17 team that won the gold medal this past summer. He’s a good scorer. Other players enjoy playing with him and I absolutely love watching him play.”

He was also a member of the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship team which allowed the U17 team to qualify for the FIBA World Championships in 2012. Additionally, Frankamp has twice been selected to the USA Developmental National Team in 2010 and 2011.

“Conner comes from an athletic family where he grew up with his father (Marty) as his coach,” Self said. “Karen is a school teacher and they absolutely love KU and they will be a great addition to the KU family.”
