Suspect in Missouri killing arrested in Washington state

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say a suspect in a southwest Missouri killing has been arrested in Washington state.

Police in Joplin, Missouri, said that U.S. Marshals took 33-year-old Michael Osborne into custody Wednesday night. He’s charged with first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Shawn Rockers.

Rockers was found Jan. 11 lying in a street with a chest wound and died at a hospital. Police say Osborne stabbed Rockers after a disturbance at an acquaintance’s apartment and then fled. The search included a nearly five-hour Joplin standoff that left police empty handed.

Police haven’t said what started the argument. But charging documents say a witness told police that Osborne threatened to kill Rockers about seven days earlier.

Osborne previously served time in prison for abandonment of a corpse.

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI – Ricky Bobby Lee Gillpatrick, 37, of Kansas City, Missouri died in a house fire on January 27, 2019. Ricky was born on January 21, 1982 in St. Louis City, St. Louis, Missouri. He worked as a cashier at Price Chopper.

Larry D. Bruns
1941-2019

Larry D. Bruns, 77, of Whiting, died Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at his home.

He was born October 25, 1941 at Holton. His parents were William and Eva Williams Bruns. He graduated from Whiting High School and had served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Larry was a farmer and a stockman.

He married Marjorie “Pat” Zirger on September 27, 1967 at Holton. She preceded him in death on September 23, 2014.

Larry was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Bruns.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy McNeely (Don), Topeka; two sons, Kevin Robbins, Holton and Tracy Robbins (Terri), Circleville; a brother, Dick Bruns (Darlene), Holton, seven grandchildren, Cody Robbins, Kasie VanDonge (Adam), Jordan Robbins (Dylan), Sarah Robbins, Brittany Robbins, Kelcie Strecker (Trey) and Ryan McNeely and two great grandchildren Kynslee Strecker and Copelan Robbins.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1st at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Private inurnment will be later in the Holton Cemetery. Larry will lie in state after noon on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Albert “Al” W. Richardson
1930-2019

HOLTON – Albert “Al” W. Richardson, 88, of Holton, died Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at the Holton Community Hospital.

He was born September 9, 1930 at Oakley, the son of Alvin and Alice Bogart Richardson. He graduated from Oakley High School in 1948.

Al worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Topeka, retiring in September of 1992.

He was a member of the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton.

He married Dorothy Doherty on September 24, 1950 at Colby. She preceded him in death on June 15, 2000.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and was the last of their surviving children.

Survivors include a son, Steven Richardson (Mary), Holton; three daughters, Karen McDonald (Chris), Frankfort, Linda Richardson, Glendale, AZ and Marvene DeVader (Henry), Hoyt; his girl friend, Mary May, Holton; nine grandchildren, Shawn, Denise, Charles, Clifton, Jessica, Jenny, Jandy, Kayle and Mason, twenty-six great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

A visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, February 1st at the Evangel United Methodist Church Family Life Center. Inurnment will be later in the Holton Cemetery. Frances Louise Roberts
1928-2019

Frances Louise Roberts 90, of Kansas City, Missouri formerly of St. Joseph, MO passed away Wednesday January 30, 2019 in a Kansas City health care center. She was born August 20, 1928 in St. Joseph, Missouri daughter of the late Alma & Oran Burkart. She retired from Whittaker Cable in 1986. She was a former member of the Hyde Valley United Methodist Church. Frances was preceded in death by her parent, husband, Frederick A. Roberts, 4 brothers & 3 sisters. She is survived by daughter, Candace Roberts, Kansas City, MO, granddaughters, Carlee Turner, and Breanne Turner, grandson, Sean Shepherd. Human remains identified as those of missing Missouri man

KENNETT, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say human remains found in the Bootheel area of far southeastern Missouri are those of a man who was reported missing six months ago.

Dental records were used to identify the remains as Steven Wayne Ketchum. He was 26 when he was reported missing in July. Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder says the remains were found Jan. 16.

Police: Kan. mom went to bar, left 2 toddlers in car on cold night

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a mother has been arrested after going to a Lawrence bar and leaving her two toddlers in a vehicle parked outside on a dangerously cold night.

Police responded around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report that a customer was trying to get back into the bar after she was kicked out. Staff told police that the woman had been at the bar while her 2- and 3-year-old children stayed unattended in the vehicle as temperatures were in the single digits amid a polarvortex.

Officer Derrick Smith says the woman left before police arrived, but officers stopped her vehicle. He says the children weren’t hurt, although they were left “without heat for a substantial amount of time.” The woman has been booked into jail on suspicion of child endangerment and drunken driving.

KC Woman Sentenced for Leading Meth Conspiracy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City, Mo., woman was sentenced in federal court today for her role in leading a large methamphetamine conspiracy, according to the Unites States Attorney.

Yadieras Y. Contreras, also known as “Fajita,” 36, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to 13 years and nine months in federal prison without parole.

Contreras was the third defendant in this case to be sentenced this month. Co-defendant David F. Bushdiecker,47, was sentenced on Jan. 24, 2019, to 20 years and five months in federal prison without parole. Co-defendant Benjamin H. McDaniel, also known as “Cowboy,” 56, was sentenced on Jan. 4, 2019, to 14 years in federal prison without parole. Additionally, nine co-defendants in this case have been sentenced and three more have pleaded guilty and await sentencing.

On Feb. 9, 2018, Contreras pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Contreras admitted that she sold more than 40 kilograms of methamphetamine to McDaniel from 2014 to April 2015. McDaniel then distributed methamphetamine to others.

Contreras also admitted that she sold methamphetamine to co-defendant Troy C. Hudson, 50, of Belton, Mo. Hudson delivered drugs to Contreras and collected the proceeds of drug trafficking. Hudson also transported a large amount of cash (the proceeds of drug trafficking) to Arizona. Hudson was sentenced on Nov. 16, 2018, to eight years and two months in federal prison without parole.

Contreras also received methamphetamine from Roberto W. Duran, also known as “Muchacho,” 37, a citizen of El Salvador who resided in Phoenix, Ariz. He delivered approximately 10 pounds of methamphetamine at a time to Contreras’s residence or to a garage behind a pizza restaurant in Raytown, Mo. The methamphetamine was hidden in various vehicles and removed once it arrived. Contreras paid the drivers for methamphetamine they had previously delivered, and those proceeds were then transported back to Arizona. Duran was sentenced on June 28, 2018, to 14 years and seven months in federal prison without parole.

Contreras was allowed to use the Raytown garage by the garage’s renter, co-defendant Aaron R. Plowman, 41, of Eldon, Mo. On four occasions, Plowman permitted Contreras to use the garage to receive methamphetamine shipments from her Arizona supplier. In exchange for the use of the garage space, Contreras fronted about one pound of methamphetamine to Plowman on each occasion. Plowman was sentenced on July 30, 2018, to 10 years and eight months in federal prison without parole.

William Joseph “Bill” Hines”

William Joseph “Bill” Hines, 91, of Lancaster, KS died on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at his home in Lancaster, KS.

Funeral services will be 1:30 pm on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Neill officiating. Burial will follow in the Lancaster Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, Jan. 31st, 2019 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Bill was born on Sept. 13, 1927 in Atchison Kansas the son of Samuel K. and Norine (Herbst) Hines. He attended Shannon grade school and graduated from Atchison County Community High School, Effingham in 1944. He celebrated his 18th birthday in the Pacific aboard the “USS Iowa” in charge of a 5” gun mount. He returned home after World War II aboard the “Iowa” as a 3rd Class Petty Officer. He was married to Shirley Jeanne Grame on Nov. 29th, 1953. She passed away on April 4, 1958. He married Joanna “Jo” Bewley on Dec. 22, 1962 in Holton, KS. Bill was self employed as a carpenter and farmer. He was the 3rd generation to farm the Hines farm north of Shannon. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post # 1175, and the American Legion Post # 6, of Atchison and a former member of the NFO (National Farmers Organization). Bill served 12 years as Treasurer of the Lancaster Township. He enjoyed woodworking and his garden.

Survivors include his wife Joanna Hines of the home, two daughters, Teri (Thayne) Ramsey, St. Joseph, MO, and Cheryl (Tom) Hawk, Effingham, KS, two sons Rex (Kathy) Hines, Atchison, and Kent (Stephanie) Hines, Eldon, MO, two granddaughters Sarah and Molly, seven step grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. His parents, first wife, Shirley, two sisters Carlene Hicks, and Ardenna Henning, one grandson Toby Schrader and one step great granddaughter preceded him in death.

1925-2019

Dorothy A Hadley 93, of Savannah, Missouri, passed away Monday, January 28, 2019 in a Savannah, MO. health care center. She was born February 28, 1925 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Alice and James Alvin Stewart. She was a homemaker and farmer with her husband, and continued farming for 20 years after her husbands death in 1965, and she was a Christian. Dorothy was preceded in death by husband, Milton Hadley, her parents, a daughter Helen Frances Hadley, a son Edward Cyrus Hadley, seven brothers & sisters. Survivors include, six daughter: Linda (Kenneth) Kretzer, Savannah, MO, Jerrie Ann (Alec “Sonny”) Hovey, Cosby, MO, Alice M. (Mark) Gariepy, New Draunsels, TX, Betty “Dorothy” (Larry) Kretzer, Savannah, MO, Vera Chadwick, St. Joseph, MO, and Sheila R. (Sy) Miller, Overland Park, KS, 20 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren 23 great great grandchildren, a brother, Richard Stewart, Denver, CO, sister, Jean Hall of Anchorage, AK, and a sister in law, Shirley Stewart, Ohio.

James “Jim” F. Sears
1943-2019

James “Jim” F. Sears 75 of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully Sunday, January 27, 2019 at his home. He was born May 9, 1943 in St. Joseph, MO to the late Rachel and William E. Sears.

At age 17 Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 4 years. Upon his discharge, he moved to Wichita, KS to attend computer trade school, where he met and married his wife, Martha. They continued to live in Wichita, KS for 30 years. During this time, Jim also volunteered as a Sheriff Reserve for 13 years, and then an additional 13 years as an EMS Reserve. In 1997, they returned to live in St. Joseph, MO. for the remainder of his life. During this time, he was employed by the Missouri Department of Corrections State Prison, until his retirement in 2008. After his retirement, he continued 2 days a week volunteering over 900 hours to the Department of Corrections assisting the Warehouse staff, Employee Benefit Fair, Special Olympics benefit golf tournament, staff cookouts, family day and much more. One of his most treasured moments was having them name him Employee of the Month in March 2017 for being a genuinely kind, caring, helpful person and an excellent example of professionalism. He enjoyed traveling the mid-west, riding his motorcycle, going to classic car shows, fairs and events. Most will remember him for his love of family and friends and his annual birthday phone calls, along with his never-ending compassion to always be there when they needed a helping hand. Or, just to stop by to say ‘Hey’ and visit awhile. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters: Olliemay McQuiston; Delma Sears; Thelma Sears; Julia Sears; Darlene Kriner; Glendola “Yvonne” Morse; Esther “Roberta” Kunzler, six brothers: Thomas “Sonny” Sears; Raymond Sears; Kenneth Sears; Earl Sears; Dale Sears; and Charles Sears. Survivors include wife, Martha Sears (St Joseph, Mo.); daughter, Connie (Brian) Salmon (Roseburg, OR); son, John (Natalie) Sears (Eureka, KS); one brother, Delbert (Linda) Sears (Sterling, CO); 1 grandson; 5 step grandchildren; and 14 step great grandchildren. Joann Irene Stewart
1935-2019

Joann Irene Stewart 83, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday January 28, 2019 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. She was born June 18, 1935 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was a first generation American as her parents Stanley and Anita Salata, who preceded her in death were born in Poland. She graduated from St. Stanislaus and Benton high school class of 1952. She enjoyed a long career in bookkeeping, accounting & credit management. She was a former member of St. James Catholic Church, and enjoyed Pinochle and bowling. Joann was preceded in death by her parents, grandchildren: Demetria and Robert White, and brother, Tom J. Salata. She is survived by daughters, Georgi Stewart, and Kathy R. (K.C.) Stewart-Holt both of St. Joseph, MO, brother, Edward (Bernice) Salata, Sabata, CA, grandchildren: Brandon (Valerie) White, Donovan (Renee) Stewart, great grandchildren, Bianca, Dominic, Kalea, Tyrese, and Isaiah, as well as many friends. Daviess Co. man, 11-year-old hospitalized after crash into tree

DAVIESS COUNTY – Two people were injured in an accident just after 6a.m. Wednesday in Daviess County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Jeep Liberty driven by Larry C. Raymo, 77, Jamesport, was northbound on 320th Street five miles north of Jamesport.

The driver lost control on the ice covered road. The Jeep traveled off the road a struck a tree.

A passenger Ivan L. Miller, 11, Jamesport, was flown to Children’s Mercy for treatment of serious injuries, according to the MSHP.

Grundy County Ambulance transported Raymo to Wright Memorial Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

2 bills aim to protect students in Missouri accused of sex assault

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Republican lawmakers are proposing an overhaul of how Missouri universities handle sexual harassment and assault claims to add more protections for the accused.

Two measures in the Missouri House and Senate include provisions that give more power to those accused under Title IX, the federal law that bars gender-based discrimination in schools that receive federal money.

Both bills would borrow judges to hear appeals from students punished for sexual misconduct. The proposals would also allow a student to sue a university if they are not afforded due process.

The measures dovetail with major Title IX changes under review by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Wendy Murphy of New England Law Boston says the Missouri proposals would further victimize women in a system that already favors the accused.
