O’FALLON, Mo. (AP) – A suburban St. Louis man who has served as a Cub Scout den leader has been charged with sexually abusing an 8-year-old boy.

48-year-old Matthew Baker, of O’Fallon, was charged Friday with statutory sodomy involving a child under the age of 12.

Baker is jailed in St. Charles County on $50,000 bond. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

The boy told authorities he was abused earlier this month while playing a board game with Baker on a mattress in the basement of Baker’s home.

Authorities didn’t say whether the alleged abuse was connected to Baker’s association with scouting. Baker is listed on a Cub Scout site for the O’Fallon area as leader for second-graders.

SHAWNEE, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a driver has struck and killed a 26-year-old man while backing up in the driveway of a suburban Kansas City duplex.

The crash happened around 9:20 a.m. Monday in Shawnee, Kansas. The man’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Police say the 51-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman who was driving the vehicle is cooperating with the investigation.

“Ike is the true definition of a leader. I take great pride in the fact that one of the greatest leaders of the past century was from Abilene, Kansas, right here in the true heart of America,” said Gov. Colyer, M.D. “Ike taught us that in order to effectively lead, you need to listen and serve, a model for all Kansans to follow.”

President Eisenhower became the 34^th President of the United States in 1953, before that serving in the U.S. Army during World War I. In World War II, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force.

“We are deeply humbled that my Grandfather would be honored in this way,” said Mary Eisenhower Atwater. “This statue will act as a beacon of light for all who see it and come from simple beginnings to strive for their dreams.  It is only fitting that this statue looks on the Kansas Capitol grounds reminding him of where he started and where he lays to rest.”

In February, Gov. Colyer chose to sign SB 262, which authorized the construction of the statue, as the first bill he signed in to law. The bill signing was held at the Dwight Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene.

The statue is now the fourth tribute to President Eisenhower on the statehouse grounds.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – A 37-year-old massage therapist who was accused of sexually abusing four women has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

William Gene Morlang was sentenced Friday on two counts of sodomy. He was also given a concurrent one-year sentence for sexual abuse.

Morlang insisted before he was sentenced that he had not committed any crimes.

Morlang originally faced 10 criminal charges after police accused him of abusing four women.

After a trial in August, a jury found him guilty of three counts and not guilty of five charges and failed to reach a verdict on two of the counts.

HERMANN, Mo. (AP) – The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a 55-year-old woman died in a collision with a trolley on a tour of the state’s wine region.

Two other people in the woman’s vehicle and seven people on the trolley were injured in the crash Saturday near Hermann.

The patrol says Paula Heidemann, of Hermann, died at the scene when she tried to turn and was hit by the eastbound trolley.

An 8-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl in Heidemann’s vehicle, both from Pacific, were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The passengers on the trolley suffered minor to moderate injuries.

Kevin Sanderlin, owner of Hermann Trolley, said it was the first accident for the trolley, which has operated for nine years.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – A man has been criminally charged days after a woman’s body was found near Fellows Lake at Springfield.

35-year-old Joseph Ehlers has been charged with abandonment of a corpse in connection with the death of 21-year-old Elisa Ferguson.

Police say Ferguson’s body was found Monday afternoon in a stream off a rural road on City Utilities property.

Police say Ehlers, who was charged Thursday told investigators that he came home from work last week and found Ferguson dead with a syringe in her arm. Ehlers told police he panicked, carried Ferguson out to his vehicle, drove to the lake and dumped her body.

Court documents say Ehlers is on probation and parole for previous drug convictions.

Police have not released the cause of Ferguson’s death.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a Minnesota frozen food and packing company is recalling more than 212,000 pounds of ready-to-eat pork and chicken products that contain vegetables that might be contaminated with salmonella and listeria. See the labels here.

The Agriculture Department said in a release  that Buddy’s Kitchen Inc. of Burnsville produced the products between Oct 19, 2017, and Oct. 9, 2018. The items were shipped to Missouri, Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota and New Jersey. They have the number “P-4226” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The problem was discovered by Buddy’s vegetable supplier. The USDA says no adverse reactions to the products have been reported. Consumers are urged not to eat the products.

Salmonella can cause abdominal cramps and fever. Listeria can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion loss of balance and convulsions.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Topeka headquarters of Payless Shoesource will be auctioned online this week, after more jobs were eliminated by the company.

The company on Friday eliminated 35 merchandising positions in Topeka as part of what it calls a new merchandising structure. The jobs will either transfer to Dallas or not be filled.

The online auction of the nearly 307,000-square-foot headquarters will be held Monday through Wednesday, with a starting bid of $1.25 million.

Payless officials haven’t said exactly how many jobs have been eliminated in Topeka or if any divisions will be left here. At least 350 employees have been laid off, but more positions were moved to Dallas.

Payless has been restructuring after emerging from bankruptcy. It is relocating most of its corporate headquarters to Dallas.
