ADAIR COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday in Adair County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1981 International truck driven by Gene D. McVey, 80, Kirksville, was southbound on U.S. 63, one mile north of Kirskville. The vehicle ran off the road and overturned.

McVey was pronounced dead at the scene.  He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man convicted of trying to sexually exploit two teenage girls has skipped his sentencing hearing and remains missing.

Daelin Williams was convicted earlier this year of two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child after pleading no contest. The 25-year-old is accused of driving two 17-year-old girls to Lawrence and encouraging them to strip at an adult club in January 2017.

Williams registered as a sex offender as required, but he didn’t attend his April 27 sentencing. Judge Peggy Kittel ordered a bench warrant for his arrest, which remained active as of Friday.

Williams posted his initial $50,000 cash bond and was released from jail less than a week after being arrested in April 2017.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas woman who beat her fiance’s 2-year-old daughter to death has been sentenced to nearly 27 years in prison.

Lindsey Thomasson of Gardner was sentenced Tuesday to 26 years and eight months in prison for the death of 2-year-old Presley Porting.

The girl was found unresponsive in the family’s home in February 2017.

Assistant District Attorney Jason Covington said in April that Presley died from blunt force trauma to the head, which she suffered while Thomasson was babysitting her.

Doctors testified that Presley could have been saved if she received immediate medical attention. Instead, the evidence showed Thomasson tried to cover up the crime by putting makeup on the girl to conceal bruises.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – A federal judge has ruled that Planned Parenthood will not be allowed to provide medication-induced abortions at its clinics in Columbia or Springfield.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips ruled Monday that the organization has not proven that enough women will be denied access to abortions under state rules imposed last year.

Phillips denied a request from Planned Parenthood Great Plains and Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri for a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of the regulations.

The regulations require providers of medication abortions to find doctors with admitting privileges at a local hospital who will be available at all times to treat complications from medication abortions.

Currently, medication abortions are provided in Missouri only in Kansas City or St. Louis.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – The chairman of a Missouri House panel that investigated former Gov. Eric Greitens says the state shouldn’t pay more than $150,000 of legal bills submitted by attorneys who represented Greitens’ office.

State Rep. Jay Barnes sent a letter to the Office of Administration urging it to reject the payments requested by the Kansas City-based Graves Garrett law firm and the Connecticut-based Shipman & Goodwin law firm. The letter was publicly released Tuesday.

An Office of Administration spokeswoman says it is still reviewing the bills.

Greitens resigned June 1 while facing potential impeachment proceedings over allegations of sexual and political misconduct.

The former Republican governor contends taxpayers should foot the bills because the attorneys represented his office, not him personally. But Barnes says Greitens should bear the costs himself.

Kobach made his comments Monday night during a gathering of nearly all Republican and Democratic candidates for governor and independent Greg Orman. The event in Lawrence was organized by the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and featured each candidate answering questions in separate 10-minute sessions.

Kobach told the crowd people who want a governor who will try to make everyone happy and say what people want to hear shouldn’t vote for him.

Other issues discussed at the session included a possible constitutional amendment to give the Legislature authority over spending on public schools and immigration policies.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Gov. Mike Parson has appointed two members to the State Board of Education.

The appointments, announced Tuesday, breathe new life into the group that supervises public schools after months of uncertainty.

Former Gov. Eric Greitens had stacked the board with members willing to fire the education commissioner. The effort was successful, but the move angered lawmakers who later refused to confirm Greitens’ appointments, leaving the board without a quorum since January.

Parson appointed Peter Herschend and Carol Hallquist. Herschend is a former member of the education board and co-owns the company that runs Silver Dollar City. Hallquist retired as president of the Hallmark Corporate Foundation at Hallmark Cards Inc. and had previously been appointed by Greitens to the state Coordinating Board for Early Childhood.

The board next meets on Thursday.
