(UPDATE) Body recovered from river identified as Chillicothe teen
(UPDATE) The Missouri State Highway Patrol has identified the body recovered Sunday evening from the Thompson River as a Chillicothe teenager.
According to the MSHP, 18-year-old Michael D. Cappell was in the Thompson River in Livingston County around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and entered an area of deep water. Cappell was unable to swim and drowned.
His body was recovered by MSHP Marine Operations troopers at 5:15 p.m. on Sunday.

(Monday 8 a.m.) – Livingston County authorities say the body of a missing person was recovered Sunday evening from the Thompson River.
According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, multiple agencies and teams including the Missouri State Highway Patrol Dive Team helped over the weekend with the search in the Thompson River west of Chillicothe, commonly known at the 3rd street bottoms.
The Sheriff’s office said more details will be released at a later time.
Man dies after suspected Missouri road rage shooting
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) – Authorities say a man who was wounded in a suspected case of road rage has died from his injuries.
Joplin police said in a news release that 27-year-old David Reynolds, of Carthage, died Sunday afternoon. Police say his young children and a woman were with Reynolds on Saturday when he and another man got into a disagreement while they were driving on Interstate 249. Both men pulled over the shoulder, and Reynolds was shot outside of his vehicle. Police say the men apparently didn’t know each other beforehand.
Police say that before Reynolds died, 23-year-old Christopher Montz, of Neosho, was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Bond is set at $50,000. The prosecutor’s office didn’t immediately return a phone message asking whether Montz has an attorney.
Man arrested on I-70 after pointing gun at off-duty Kan. officer
SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an aggravated assault involving an off-duty officer and have made an arrest.
Just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday, an off-duty Topeka police officer was the victim of an aggravated assault by use of a firearm in the lot of 1401 SW Wanamaker in Topeka, according to Lt. Aaron Jones.
The officer was able to call in the location, description, and direction of the suspect. The vehicle was initially found by a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper eastbound on Interstate 70 and 75 Highway. Officers from Topeka police, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Capital Police arrived to assist with a high-risk stop between Mac Vicar and 1st Street.
There happened to be a AAA driver arrive at the same time. They helped to shut down the highway for the safety of the travelers.
Authorities took Randal S. Hogue, 31, Topeka, into custody. Authorities also discovered a stolen handgun and an illegally altered shotgun in the vehicle.
Randal then attempted to escape custody while at the Law Enforcement Center during interviews. Randal was captured and taken to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections under suspicion of Aggravated Assault(2x), Aggravated Escape from Custody, Obstruction, Criminal Use of a Weapon, Theft-Firearm, and Driving While Suspended, according to Jones.

Deputies, volunteers rescue 38 dogs from SE Kansas home
LYON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a case of extreme animal hoarding.
The Animal Justice League of America in Mission, Kansas contacted Unleashed Pet Rescue to save 38 dogs from a home in Olpe, Kansas, according to a social media report.
The animals had been living in a trailer without air conditioning or proper care, according to Unleashed Pet Rescue. “Three of the dogs are going to require extensive vet care, 2 with skin issues and one with an injured back leg.”
Lyon County deputies helped load 17 dogs and communicated in depth with the owner in regards to reaching out for help in the future. They rescued an additional 21 dogs Sunday.
Unleashed also bought a window unit air conditioner and left it with the owner as well as 70 pounds of high quality dog food.
Unleashed Pet Rescue and Animal Justice League are working to find homes for the pets.
Investigation complete: Driver shot by Kan. officer after seat-belt violation
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — An investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Lawrence has been turned over to prosecutors.
The investigation, conducted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, made no conclusions about whether a Lawrence police officer’s shooting of a man during a traffic stop broke any laws. That decision will rest with the Douglas County District Attorney.
The shooting happened May 29 when a man was pulled over in downtown Lawrence for a suspected seat belt violation.
Police say the man was uncooperative, refused orders to get out of his vehicle and then began hitting the officer who pulled him over. Police say that’s when a second officer shot the man.
The man was treated at a hospital and is expected to recover.
4-year-old child injured by stray bullet in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City police say a 4-year-old was wounded by a stray bullet that came from a nearby shootout.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced Sunday that 35-year-old Ellery Beals was charged in the case after being captured on surveillance video firing shots Saturday night at a south Kansas City gas station. Prosecutors said he encountered a man who shot him last month but denied shooting at him.
Beals is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.
About the same time the gunfire was reported, police received a call that someone was shot in a home several hundred yards away. Police say a stray bullet traveled from the shootout into a nearby house, causing a broken arm for the 4-year-old.
Kansas teen remains jailed in Iowa for alleged sex crime
ANKENY, IOWA — A Kansas teen remains jailed in Iowa for alleged sex crimes.
Just after 8p.m. Thursday, authorities in Iowa booked 18-year-old Devin Michael Miller of Rose Hill into the Polk County Iowa Jail on requested charges of enticing away a minor under 13 for sexual abuse or exploitation, according to the Polk County Jail booking report.
The case involves allegedly sending and receiving nude photos on a cell phone in April, according to Ankeny police.
Kan. Supreme Court sends DNA request back to lower court in Kan. rape case
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court has remanded a convicted man’s request for DNA testing back to Leavenworth County District Court for further review.
The court on Friday reversed earlier rulings by a district judge and the Kansas Court of Appeals that denied the request from 39-year-old Gregory Mark George Jr., who is serving time for rape, aggravated robbery and aggravated intimidation of a witness.
The Leavenworth Times reports George was convicted of raping a clerk during a robbery at a Lansing convenience store in 2004.
In 2013, George filed a petition for DNA testing of hairs that were collected as part of his case but were never tested.
The state Supreme Court ruling asks a district judge to determine whether the requested testing might produce evidence that could help exonerate George.
