JACKSON COUNTY – A Missouri man died in an accident just before 11:30p.m Monday in Jackson County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Toyota passenger vehicle driven by Dung N. Phan, 41, Lee’s Summit, was southbound on Interstate 470 just north of Lakewood Boulevard. The vehicle overtook and rear-ended a 2002 Chevy driven by Carl A. Martin, 58, Lee’s Summitt.

The Chevy overturned, ejected the driver and caught fire. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. Phan was transported to Centerpointe Medical Hospital.  Neither driver was wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A former Olathe South High School teacher who engaged in a sexual relationship with a student has been sentenced to three years of probation.

As part of a plea deal, 43-year-old Michael Jasiczek will serve 10 days of “shock time” in jail and will have to register as a sex offender.

Former sociology teacher said he began treatment after he was charged in June.

Jasiczek was an assistant football coach at Olathe South High School until May, when he was placed on administrative leave.

He pleaded guilty in January to engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse and lewd touching with a student over the age of 16. A third fondling charge was dropped.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas Senate committee approved a bill that would make it a felony for fugitives and domestic abusers to possess firearms.

Supporters say the new law would allow offenders to be prosecuted in state courts instead of relying on federal courts, which are sometimes too busy to handle such cases.

Jo Ella Hoye, a representative for Moms Demand Action, said she was happy with committees’ decision. She said the bill advanced Monday bill will help law enforcement protect women and families and ultimately save lives.

In addition to fugitives and domestic abusers, the bill also makes it a felony for an undocumented immigrant to have a firearm.

The committee also advanced a bill that would allow people who have concealed carry permits issued by other states to carry concealed firearms in Kansas.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Harvard Law School professor whose past clients include the family of the 18-year-old fatally shot in 2014 by a policeman in Ferguson, Missouri, has joined the prosecution team in the criminal case against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Circuit Judge Rex Burlison on Monday approved Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner’s motion to have Ronald S. Sullivan join the prosecution.

Greitens was indicted in February on felony invasion of privacy. He is accused of taking a compromising photo of a woman with whom he was having an affair without her permission in 2015, before he was elected.

Greitens has denied criminal wrongdoing.

Sullivan was the attorney for the family of Michael Brown, whose death set off months of protests in and around the St. Louis suburb.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Another member of the Satanic Temple is suing Missouri over its abortion laws.

The Satanic Temple announced the lawsuit Monday. The anonymous pregnant woman’s attorney says the state’s informed consent laws violate her religious beliefs, which are to follow scientific understanding of the world.

The booklets say abortion will end “the life of a separate, unique, living human being.”

Satanic Temple members don’t believe in a literal Satan but see the biblical Satan as a metaphor for rebellion against tyranny.

Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley’s Deputy Chief of Staff Loree Anne Paradise says the office will “vigorously defend” what she called sensible regulations.

Another Satanic Temple member’s challenge to the state’s informed-consent law is pending at the Missouri Supreme Court. The other woman who sued has already received an abortion.

Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer has made a point to say he will not accept harassment and discrimination in his administration. But he won’t say if he’ll reinstate an executive order that would bar discrimination against LGBT state workers.

“What I have said is that we will not tolerate discrimination. If there’s an issue of discrimination, come to me,” Colyer said. “We’ll deal with it. It’s not tolerated by our administration, period.”

Former Gov. Sam Brownback rescinded the executive order that had protected gay, lesbian and transgender workers in 2015. He said protections should be created by lawmakers, not through executive action.

Tom Witt, with the group Equality Kansas, said Colyer’s words are not enough.

“If the governor is serious about rooting out discrimination in his administration, he’ll put it in writing,” Witt said. “We had it in writing.”

Some Democrats in the U.S. Senate cited Brownback’s reversal of the order as the reason they voted against his confirmation as religious freedom ambassador. That opposition nearly cost Brownback his new diplomatic post. He was confirmed after Vice President Pence cast a tie-breaking vote.

Colyer’s first executive order as governor made sexual harassment training mandatory for all executive branch employees.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Police say officers shot and killed a man outside of a Kansas City home where they also found the bodies of two dead women.

The department says in a news release that officers responding to a call about shots fired at the home at around 2:30 a.m. Monday found a dead woman outside. It says a man emerged from the home and fired at the officers, who fired back and killed him.

Police say the officers then noticed smoke coming from the home and found another woman’s body inside the house after firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The names of the two women and the man weren’t immediately released. Police spokesman Lionel Colon said in an email that investigators don’t know of a possible motive yet.
