JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) – A Missouri couple has been sentenced to 120 days in prison for fracturing four of their baby’s ribs and both his legs.

The Joplin Globe reports that 23-year-old Brandon Sanders and his ex-wife, 22-year-old Anna Sanders, were sentenced Thursday for second-degree assault and first-degree child endangerment. Failure to successfully complete the so-called shock time and probation could land them in prison for seven years.

Their baby was 1-month-old in October 2015 when he was taken to a hospital. A child abuse pediatrician testified at the father’s sentencing hearing that the femur in one leg and tibiae in both legs were broken, with one tibia fractured in a way that usually indicates severe twisting.

Police say both parents admitted to abusing the baby, who has been adopted by another couple.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Authorities say two people have died after a fleeing motorist crashed in Kansas City.

Police said in a news release that attempts to stop the sport utility vehicle ended before the driver apparently lost control early Friday on a U.S. 71 northbound ramp from Interstate 435. Police say the SUV struck a concrete bridge support.

The names of the two people killed weren’t immediately released. Police said only that they were male.

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (AP) – Four teenagers are charged with a felony after they were accused of driving onto a suburban Kansas City high school campus with an AR-15 assault style rifle and other weapons.

Eighteen-year-old Landon Mikle, 18-year-old Tynan B. Mullen, 17-year-old Tanner Nicholson and 19-year-old Scott Ryan were charged Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court with a felony count of unlawful use of a weapon.

The charge specifically mentions a handgun, but a witness also recalled seeing some of the suspects in a car with an assault-style rifle after classes ended for the day Wednesday at Lee’s Summit High School. The witness also told police that he saw Nicholson threaten a person.

Lee’s Summit police later tracked down the car at a home and found the AR-15 rifle and other weapons.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – A 19-year-old Springfield man who raped a young girl he was babysitting was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Chris Courtois was sentenced Wednesday for statutory rape, child molestation and four counts of statutory sodomy.

The Springfield News-Leader reports prosecutors said Courtois sexually abused several victims.

It was the first case in Greene County in which prosecutors used a 2014 state constitutional amendment allowing evidence of prior criminal acts, whether charged or uncharged, to be considered by juries in the prosecution of child sex crimes.

MIAMI COUNTY — A Kansas man died in an accident just before 5p.m. Thursday in Miami County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by James R. Carr, 53, Kansas City, Kansas, was northbound on U.S. 69 at 399th Street.

The vehicle went off the roadway and struck a bridge pillar head on.  Carr was pronounced dead at the scene. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley’s office says it doesn’t appear that Gov. Eric Greitens’ staff violated records laws while using a secretive messaging app.

Greitens’ office released the report Thursday. The attorney general’s office confirmed the report.

Hawley launched an inquiry into Greitens’ office after the Kansas City Star reported last year that Greitens and some of his staff had Confide accounts. The app deletes messages and prevents recipients from saving, forwarding, printing or taking screenshots of messages.

Five members of the governor’s office told the attorney general’s office that they had used Confide to discuss government-related matters. But the staffers said they only messaged about logistics, such as scheduling meetings.

The attorney general’s office concluded that state law doesn’t require those types of messages to be retained.

COLUMBUS, Kan. (AP) — A Missouri man has been arrested on kidnapping charges after police found him with two Kansas girls at traffic stop.

Nathan Belcher, 28, was arrested Tuesday after coordinated efforts between investigators in Cherokee County, Kansas, and Jasper County, Missouri. He’s being held in Jasper County on $10,000 bond.

A Kansas police officer stopped Belcher of Carl Junction, Missouri, early Sunday morning. Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves says the officer found in the car two girls ages 10 and 15 who weren’t related to Belcher. He was released and the officer returned the girls to their parents.

Groves said Wednesday the investigation is ongoing, and that detectives are looking at Belcher’s phone after obtaining a search warrant for digital evidence.

Jail records don’t immediately list if Belcher has an attorney.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — The man charged in a possible hate crime killing in a suburban Kansas City bar is scheduled for a plea hearing next week.

Johnson County Court records show the hearing is scheduled Tuesday for 52-year-old Adam Purinton.

Purinton is charged with first-degree murder in the February 2017 shooting death of 32-year-old Srinivas Kuchibhotla at Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe.

In Johnson County, Purinton also is charged with two counts of attempted murder after two other men were injured during the shooting.

Federal prosecutors allege Purinton targeted Kuchibhotla and another Indian man because of their race or ethnicity. The third man was injured when he tried to help the victims.

Purinton also faces federal hate crime charges. He has pleaded not guilty in the federal case.
