(Update) – A 17-year-old has been charged in connection with a crash that killed four people Friday on the northeast part of St. Joseph.

Skylar Lucas-Cox of St. Joseph is charged in Buchanan County with a felony of first-degree involuntary manslaughter.

According to court documents, Lucas-Cox was driving a white Toyota Tundra north on Riverside Road Friday in a reckless manner and was unable to maintain control of the stolen vehicle.

“The suspect crossed into oncoming traffic and was struck in the south lane of Riverside,” said Officer Brendan McGinnis with the St. Joseph Police Department. “The Toyota was occupied by the suspect and (5) other persons.”

As we previously reported, four of the occupants of the Toyota died in the crash and another sustained life-threatening injuries.  Lucas-Cox was hospitalized for treatment of a serious injury.  The driver of the other vehicle also received treatment for a serious injury. We asked the Buchanan County Prosecutor’s Office if the victim’s names would be released and for a status update on those hospitalized. Prosecuting Attorney Dwight Scroggins on Monday said no additional information is being released at this time as the investigation is still pending

“The suspect was helped out of the driver seat by a witness and held on scene, after attempting to flee,” McGinnis said. “The suspect attempted to flee the scene, after knowing he had killed friends of his and continued to attempt to flee even after being restrained by a witness.”

Court documents state Lucas-Cox tested positive for cocaine, marijuana and benzodiazepines.

“The suspect’s reckless driving and impaired nature of driving, directly resulted in the death of the four victims,” said McGinnis

Lucas-Cox is scheduled for an arraignment Tuesday.  He is currently being held without bail after bond was denied.

St. Joseph, MO – The largest annual career fair in Northwest Missouri will be held this week.

Job seekers are encouraged to attend the St. Joseph Career and Resource Fair to talk with hiring businesses, educational providers and social service resources. This year, more than 70 employers will attend in addition to educational providers and social service resources.

This year marks the 13th anniversary for the Career Fair.

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce is a part of the St. Joseph Employment Coalition and both are behind the planning and organizing of the event.

The St. Joseph Employment Coalition was formed about 13 years ago with one goal in-mind: to provide job opportunities to the St. Joseph community and surrounding area. The concept was to do something positive that could stimulate economic and employment development in St. Joseph. A partnership was formed between several social service agencies, the City of St. Joseph, the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce and local media outlets to develop a team that would organize an annual citywide job fair. As the Coalition has no source of income or funding, the group had to rely solely on the support of sponsors.

The career fair takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, at the Civic Arena.

Job seekers are encouraged to dress for success by wearing business or business casual attire to the event.

Northwest Missouri State Provost named president at CSU-Pueblo

Dr. Timothy Mottet
Dr. Timothy Mottet
Northwest Missouri State University Provost Dr. Timothy Mottet will resign his position, effective June 30, to become president at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Northwest named Mottet its chief academic officer in June 2014. Under Mottet’s leadership, Northwest has reorganized its academic structure, revised its general education curriculum and opened Northwest-Kansas City at the Northland Innovation Campus, a 90,000 square-foot research and education complex in Gladstone, Missouri.

Mottet also oversaw Northwest’s development of a profession-based learning model, competency-based programming and a concurrent enrollment program with Metropolitan Community College.
In an email announcing the decision to Northwest faculty and staff, Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski said Mottet had aspirations of becoming a university president, but the opportunity became available sooner than Mottet and his spouse, Rick, anticipated.

“My three years at Northwest made me a qualified and competitive candidate for this leadership opportunity,” Mottet said. “We leave a university that performs; is focused and disciplined; is committed to providing all students with a high-value, differentiated learning experience; and a university where all faculty, staff and an entire community are committed to student success. We now know what good looks like, and it’s Northwest.”

University President Dr. John Jasinski said Mottet’s move has the Northwest community “feeling a sense of deep Northwest pride along with a smattering of emotions.” Jasinski called Mottet a bold thinker, strategist, mentor, listener, giver and servant leader. He also characterized Mottet as a leader who is student-focused; connected to faculty, staff, alumni, donors, partners and the community; and a champion of shared governance.

“Tim’s devotion to learning, relevance and all things profession-based will leave an indelible mark in all that we do in the coming decades,” Jasinski said.

During his tenure at Northwest, Mottet was honored by his alma mater, William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, with a Citation of Achievement for his professional success, and by the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce with its Excellence in Higher Education Award. He was appointed last year to the prestigious Baldrige Executive Fellows Program, which provides one-on-one access to leaders of Baldrige Award recipient organizations and an opportunity to learn role-model leadership strategies.

Prior to transitioning to Northwest’s administration, Mottet was dean of fine arts and communication at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. He worked for the University of Texas-Pan America in Edinburg, Texas, from 2007 to 2011, serving as a professor, endowed chair in communication, and assistant chair and chair of the Department of Communication. Between 1999 and 2007, Mottet held assistant professor and associate professor roles in the Department of Communication Studies at Texas State University.

Mottet has a master’s degree in mass communication from Boston University and an education doctorate in communication and learning and higher education from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.V.
