Motel Six standoff trial underway

Roderick Ellis

A jury selected in Clay County is hearing evidence this week in the Buchanan County trial of Roderick Ellis.

Ellis faces multiple felony charges in connection with a lengthy standoff with police at the Motel Six about a year ago.

The most serious charge, 1st degree domestic assault, is a class-a felony, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Ellis is accused of kidnapping his former girlfriend Rebecca Urban on October 14, 2015, forcing her at gunpoint to drive to the motel, and then, when she cried for help, shooting her in the arm in front of motel staff.  Investigators said he then forced the woman into a room at the motel for more than 11 hours. The standoff prompted evacuations and lockdowns, and shut down I-29 and Frederick Ave., along with several businesses in the area.

Seven women and seven men were selected in Clay County on Tuesday to serve as jurors and alternates during the trial.  The defense was granted a change of venue because of widespread news coverage of the standoff.

Prosecutor Ron Holliday gave the panel a preview of the story, and pointed out how the evidence would prove each of the five felony counts against Ellis. The defendant is charged with 1st degree domestic assault, kidnapping, assault of a law enforcement officer, and two counts of armed criminal action.

Public Defender Susan Rinne said the incident was about “love and betrayal,” that he believed the victim was being unfaithful. Rinne told the jury Ellis is not guilty of the charges.

“He just wanted to talk to her, and never wanted to hurt hur, never wanted to harm anyone,” she said.

After opening statements from both sides, the victim, Rebecca Urban took the witness stand Wednesday morning.

Urban described for the jury how she had broken up with the defendant, but testified she was threatened by him the night before the standoff. She recounted how she was abducted and later shot in the forearm. She described applying a tourniquet to her arm during the day-long ordeal. And she described the gunshot injuries which still have not properly healed despite two surgeries.

Testimony continues in the courtroom of Circuit Judge Patrick Robb.

emergency featureA hunter in Buchanan County was taken by life flight Wednesday morning after falling out of a tree.

Hardin said the man was bow hunting and fell out of his tree but that it’s unknown how long he laid there.  He did not have a cellphone on him so when he didn’t return home she said his family was concerned and went looking for him. The man was described as a white man in his 50s.  Hardin said she did not know if he was using a tree stand or wearing a safety harness.

Hardin said when the sheriff’s department arrived on scene crews were already loading him into the helicopter for transport. The extent of his injuries were unknown.

‘No Shave November’ kicks off at Livingston County Sheriff’s Office

razorDeputies with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office are participating in ‘No Shave November’ in an effort to raise funds for the department’s Secret Santa program.

The office said during the month of November most of its employees are tossing out the razor to raise funds to help Livingston County seniors and families in need.

The office said historically the funds raised go to help citizens in the community in situations beyond their control.  The sheriff and deputies have placed food and staples in pantries for people who are struggling, infrared heaters in homes for some with little or no heat and have even bought appliances for seniors going without.

Checkpoints to be held in Platte County in November

Feature - saturation, drunk driving, dwiThe Platte County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that sometime during the month of November it may be holding checkpoints.

The office said it could be conducting sobriety and/or safety checkpoints this month.

Sheriff Mark Owen said he would like to remind motorists that if they encounter a DWI Checkpoint the delay will be brief. The office said if a driver is suspected of being intoxicated, he/she will be asked to complete the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. Any driver found to be impaired will be arrested and transported to the Platte County Detention Center. Motorists should also keep in mind that if they encounter a safety checkpoint, the safety check will also only be for a brief time.

“We appreciate the cooperation from the public as we conduct DWI Checkpoints and take drunk drivers off our roads. We also appreciate the public’s patience when they enter a safety checkpoint, knowing that the overall goal of any checkpoint is to keep innocent motorists safe. Providing a safe and secure environment for the citizens of Platte County is one of the reasons we conduct both of these checkpoints,” Sheriff Owen said.
