Habitat for Humanity celebrates unlocking the dream at upcoming event

habitat-for-humanity1An annual fundraising event for the local Habitat for Humanity organization will celebrate accomplishments and help continue their mission.

St. Joseph Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Melissa Koch said they will be celebrating 63 completed homes for families at the 3rd annual Unlock the Dream event.

“Every year we hold a big event to celebrate the previous fiscal year and our accomplishments and celebrate the families and the people that have been involved with Habitat,” Koch said. “This year, our Unlock the Dream event is celebrating 20 years in St. Joseph and really we just decided that’s the best theme, unlocking the dream of home ownership. We’re just celebrating 20 years of progress, of change, of impacting people’s lives and this will be an opportunity where we’re going to actually invite our homeowners to the event and give them an opportunity to shake hands again with the folks who have helped make their dream come true.”

Koch said the event is also a fundraiser and will feature a repurposed furniture auction.

“Our commodity is a little bit more expensive than some organizations,” Koch said. “But a large chunk of that is paid for with either donations of material or cash to help us offset that cost, which allows us in turn to sell that home for a much more reasonable price to individuals so they can afford it.”

Leading up to the event, there are sponsorship opportunities including sponsoring a family which allows a partner family to attend the Unlock the Dream event.

“We have over 40 sponsors already,” Koch said. “I feel really blessed by that because I think that says what the interest is of people in this community to support an organization where we make such permanent life change for individuals and families.”

Habitat for Humanity’s Unlock the Dream event takes place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Word of Life Church.

Sept 11-17 declared Rail Safety Week in Missouri

wpid-modot-logo-200x150.jpgJEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Department of Transportation, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Missouri Operation Lifesaver have declared Sept. 11-17, 2016, as Missouri Rail Safety Week.

These three agencies along with local law enforcement and railroad companies are partnering together to raise public awareness about the dangers of disregarding railroad crossing laws and trespassing on railroad property.

“Collisions between vehicles or pedestrians and trains are preventable,” said Missouri Operation Lifesaver Executive Director Tim Hull.  “Missouri law enforcement agencies and railroad special agents will be out monitoring railroad crossings during Missouri Rail Safety Week.  We are hoping to change the public’s mindset regarding rail safety.  Rail Safety Week is a great opportunity to get our message out there.”

Since July 4, Missouri Operation Lifesaver has aired radio messages across the state to stress the fact that it is “no contest” to try to beat a train or even to share a walkway with trains. These ads focus on the safety campaign theme of “See Tracks? Think Train!”  Enforcement events are scheduled to deter violations of crossing safety laws and to curb trespassing on the railroad tracks.

“We are constantly striving to reduce crashes and eliminate deaths and injuries with both crossing collisions and trespasser incidents,” said Missouri State Highway Patrol Public Information and Education Director Captain John Hotz.  “We encourage everyone to take these warning devices seriously and pay attention at all railroad crossings.  Also please remember railroad tracks are private property and trespassing is dangerous and illegal.”

In 2015, there were 62 crossing crashes and trespass incidents resulting in 23 fatalities and 26 injuries in the state of Missouri.

“MoDOT works with the railroads to upgrade public crossings with lights and gates, LED lights and more reflective signing. With our limited funding, we do 25 to 30 signal upgrades per year,” said Missouri Department of Transportation Railroad Administrator Eric Curtit. “MoDOT continues to work with local communities and railroads to reduce the number of railroad crossings to improve safety. A closed crossing is the safest crossing.”

Missouri Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade intersections and on railroad rights of way through public education, engineering and enforcement.  To learn more about Missouri Operation Lifesaver, please visit www.oli.org.

Signal work planned for Belt and Mitchell

wpid-modot-logo-200x150.jpgST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Evening signal work will affect motorists traveling on U.S. Hwy 169 (Belt Highway) and Route YY (Mitchell Avenue) through St. Joseph next week.

Crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation will begin at approximately 6 p.m. Monday evening, Sept. 12, to upgrade the left-turn signals at the intersection to flashing yellow arrows, along with other routine maintenance. The work will require crews to close the turn lanes in order to change out the signals heads, signs and vehicle detection system.

During different portions of the project, the signals will be inoperable and stop signs will be in place. Drivers are reminded that whenever a signal is dark or in flash mode, the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop.

Crews hope to have the work completed by 7 a.m. Even after the signals are operational, workers will be present at the intersection performing maintenance work. Motorists should use extra caution and may encounter delays throughout the night.
