Boy hurt in third US amusement park accident in four days

Idlewide and Soak ZoneA 3-year-old boy has been injured in an accident on an old wooden roller coaster in Pennsylvania and has been hospitalized. This marks the third serious accident in the last four days involving an amusement park ride.

On Monday, three children fell more than 30 feet from a Ferris wheel when their basket overturned at the Greene County Fair in Greenville, Tenn. All were injured and Briley Reynolds, 6, remained in critical condition Thursday. The rides at the fair were being dismantled Thursday.

Former mayor charged with embezzling from food bank

USDOJ bas relief logoA former mayor of Lawrence, Kansas was charged in federal court Thursday with embezzling thousands of dollars from a food bank in Douglas County.

Acting U.S. Attorney for Kansas Tom Beall says Jeremy Farmer, 32, Lawrence, Kan., was charged with one count of embezzlement. According to court documents, the crimes took place while Farmer was the executive director of Just Food, a food bank in Douglas County.

Just Food serves more than 40 partner agencies with frozen meat and fresh produce as well as bread and food donated from community drives. The organization and its partners play a key role in fighting hunger in Douglas County.

According to court documents, prosecutors allege that from 2013 until Farmer resigned from Just Food and from his position as mayor of Lawrence in August 2015 he used his access to Just Foods’ bank accounts and accounting systems to steal more than $5,000 from the organization.

If convicted, he faces a penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.

“The fairest way in my mind was to get them all together and put them in front of one judge,” Scroggins said. “It’s all the same witnesses, all the same evidence that’s the reason you can join them is for judicial economy.”

A hearing on the motion to join will be held Monday, Aug. 15 at 2:15 in Div. 3.

According to a news release last week from the Missouri Lottery, Elizabeth Kaahea, 36 bought a scratcher at City Star on Edmond St. July 29th on her way to work at Venture Foods.

“It’s a very regular stop,” said Kaahea, adding that it often includes a Scratchers buy. “Probably 50/50; some mornings I do, some mornings I don’t.”

She said she scratched the “Ruby Red 7s” ticket she bought that morning after she arrived at work.

“The first one I scratched was $777,” she said. “I kept scratching, saying, ‘No way. Someone gave me a fake ticket.’”

She ended up with the second top prize in the game of $77,777.

At first, Kaahea thought she would sit on the ticket for a while, but then she got nervous and rounded up her Hawaiian-born husband, Keoki, and two children to head to the Kansas City Lottery office. She said she planned to pay off her school loans from Missouri S&T and head back to school to finish her degree.

“I have an opportunity to go back now,” she said.

Erik Borger currently operates Komatsu Ramen in Westport, and the Il Lazzarone restaurant in St. Joseph. He plans to open a second Komatsu Ramen location, along with an oyster bar called Ostrea, in the former Foster’s location.

Each restaurant will have its own separate entrance, but they will share a kitchen and a liquor license. Borger says he hopes to open both by the middle of September.
