Heat-related illness reported at Mosaic

Mosaic Feature(Update) – As temperatures spike Mosaic Life Care said it’s seeing several heat-related cases come through its emergency room.

Wednesday, the National Weather Service said St. Joseph tied a record of 101 degrees set in 1918.  Mosaic Life Care said Friday morning that unconfirmed numbers show five people with heat-related illnesses have come through its emergency room since Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said a heat advisory remains in effect for the area until 8 p.m. Thursday.  Temperatures are expected in the middle to upper 90s with heat index values between 105 and 109.  The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity can create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

As we previously reported, Connie Werner with the City of St. Joseph Health Department said it’s important when temperatures get this hot to take precautions.

“So what we want to avoid are extreme heat reactions – that would be reaching heat exhaustion and then heat stroke. Heat exhaustion is that in which your body is becoming stressed under the heat conditions,” she said. “That would be the extreme perspiration, the red face. That is your body telling you that you’re heading into a medical emergency. The first thing that you need to do is to get yourself cooled off,  that could lead into a heat stroke and that is a medical emergency.”

She offers several tips to remember during hot weather:

  • Stay hydrated – your body needs more water than usual
  • Try to stay as cool as possible – try to stay in air conditioned areas
  • Avoid direct sunlight, wear light colored and lightweight clothing, have something over your head
  • Remember to check on individuals at high risk of getting overheated including elderly individuals, anyone without AC, those with chronic medical conditions, anyone working outside, children and pets

Two people are now wanted on warrants in Livingston County after authorities said tips from the public helped to identify suspects in a Nov. burglary investigation.

Aaron P. Dryer, 38 of Pleasant Hill, and Jessica Dawn Borchert, 24 of Excelsior Springs are each charged in Livingston County with alleged Burglary in the 2nd Degree and Theft/Stealing property valued between $500 and $25,000.  The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office said both are wanted on felony arrest warrants.  It’s asking anyone who may know of their whereabouts to call 660-646-0515 or the nearest law enforcement agency.

The office said in Nov. it shared camera shots of two suspects actively burglarizing a building and sought TIPS from the public.  It also worked with other agencies and followed leads that let them to the Kansas City area.

“We appreciate all TIPS we receive,” the office said in a news release. “If you know the whereabouts of these two fugitives, please call us.”

A St. Joseph kid will have her artwork featured in next year’s KCP&L calendar.

10-year-old Aubrey Markt received an honorable mention prize in the KCP&L 2016 Safety Coloring Contest for her drawing. Aubrey’s picture, featuring the safety theme “don’t mix water and electricity,” will show up in the KCP&L 2016 – 2017 Safety Calendar.

KCP&L said children under the age of 12 submitted drawings to show how to be safe around electricity. Safety themes included not overloading outlets, call before you dig, and do not play near electrical equipment. The public voted on KCP&L’s Facebook page to select a winner.

All 16 pictures are featured in the 2017 KCP&L calendar.

“Finding new ways for our customers to learn about safety is always priority, that’s why we launched our first annual Safety Coloring Contest,” said Derek Bell, KCP&L senior director of Corporate Safety. “Aubrey’s picture is colorful and imaginative, which makes it engaging and informative for all ages. The 2017 calendar is a great way to display the art and give a monthly safety reminder to our customers.”

Opponents gear up for new power line project filing

Block Grain Belt Express cropped and resizedThe group that successfully organized opposition to block a power line project across Missouri is now gearing up for another fight. Block Grain Belt Express–Missouri has scheduled a series of information meetings for landowners and concerned citizens. They anticipate Clean Line Energy Partners will re-file the paperwork for the project with the Missouri Public Service Commission.

The company’s first application for a high voltage direct current transmission line across the state was denied by the PSC on July 1, 2015, when it found “the evidence shows that any actual benefits to the general public from the Project are outweighed by the burdens on affected landowners.”

As a complement to informational meetings to be held by Grain Belt Express, Block GBE will be holding its own informational meetings across the state. The Buchanan County meeting is scheduled in Faucett at the Lion’s Club June 25 starting at 10:30 a.m.

Block GBE spokeswoman Jennifer Gatrel said, “Once again, we will need the support of everyone in order to defeat Grain Belt and protect all of our property rights. We are in it to win it!”

Block GBE President Russ Piscotta said, “We look forward to seeing everyone again. Thank you all for your ongoing support. With your help, we can defeat Grain Belt once and for all!”

Block GBE will once again be represented pro bono by successful St. Louis attorney Paul Agathen, and will be raising funds for expert witnesses and expenses.

The meeting schedule:
Saturday June 18th
New London, Mo. in Ralls Co. at Lion’s Club starting at 10:30 a.m.
