Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) offers programs to help those with special needs and their caregivers enjoy the outdoors.
MDC will offer an outdoor skills special needs event 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. The program is reserved for outdoor enthusiasts young or young at heart who may have special physical or mental needs, and their guardians or caregivers. Participants in the morning will try fishing in the Burr Oak Woods pond and target shoot with air rifles. MDC staff and volunteers assist participants with all activities.
A campfire lunch will be provided. In the afternoon, participants will get a chance to go canoeing at the pond.
“This is about getting people outdoors and giving them the same opportunities that everyone else has to enjoy nature,” said Lisa LaCombe, Burr Oak Woods manager. “We get cool comments from people, such as ‘this is the first time I’ve gotten to fish in 15 years.’ “
LaCombe is also the latest organizer for a decades-old No Boundaries fishing program. This year it will be held June 11 at the Longview Lake Marina. The event coincides with Missouri’s free fishing weekend. MDC staff and volunteers assist the anglers and their caregivers with the fishing.
“Even the smallest sunfish they catch brings great delight,” LaCombe said.
MDC staff and conservation partners also recently held an 8th Annual Outdoors Without Limits event at Hazel Hill Lake north of Warrensburg in Johnson County. The joy people get from connecting with the outdoors is rewarding to those who help them.
“Our staff partners with people on things like canoeing,” LaCombe said. “We get into the canoe and paddle with them and make sure they have a good experience. Many times they will progress and follow up by paddling a kayak on their own.”
Registration is required for the programs and can be made by calling LaCombe at 816-655-6263, ext. 1332, or email at lisa.lacombe@mdc.mo.gov.
The K-JO 105.5 Radio-A-Thon for Camp Quality Friday raised $12,287 dollars. That compares to about $10,000 raised last year.
The week-long summer camp for kids with cancer operates solely on community donations. Camp Quality offers a summer camp experience and yearly support for the kids and their families.
KKJO Morning Personality Gregg Lynn hosted the event live on the air from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the St. Joseph Hy-Vee as he has each year since it started. By noon Friday, Gregg had raised just $4,000, so the second half of the day proved to be the better draw.

Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster announced this week that a judge has sentenced Licensed Clinical Social Worker, 65-year-old Robert Linebarger, of St. Joseph, to prison for five years.
The execution of that sentence was suspended and Linebarger was ordered immediately to serve 60 days’ shock detention in the Buchanan County Jail. Linebarger’s sentencing comes after his April 7, 2016, guilty plea to the class C felony of Medicaid Fraud.
According to a news release from Koster’s office, Linebarger was brought to the attention of the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Division by the Missouri Department of Social Services, Medicaid Audit and Compliance Unit. The Attorney General’s investigation then determined Linebarger billed for therapy services he was not providing to his Medicaid clients and he abandoned some of his Medicaid clients by not showing up for scheduled counseling sessions. However, he still billed Missouri Medicaid for those sessions. Finally, Linebarger created false progress notes in an attempt to conceal from investigators that he had not provided counseling sessions for which he had billed Missouri Medicaid.
In addition to his sentence, Linebarger must pay restitution to Missouri Medicaid in the sum of $16,099, surrender his Clinical Social Worker license, and perform 480 hours of community service. Upon his release, Linebarger will be on five years of supervised probation.
“When you steal from Medicaid you are stealing from all Missourians,” Koster said. “We will continue to investigate and prosecute all suspicions of Medicaid fraud by providers.”
The case was a jointly prosecuted by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and the Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Recent and continued rain led to the closure of two routes in Northwest Missouri due to high water.
Situations can change quickly, especially during flooding. With the potential for more rain in the forecast, motorists are reminded to stay alert and to not drive through any water over the roadway. It only takes six inches of water (or less!) to lose control of your vehicle and possibly be swept into rising floodwaters. Any time there is water over the roadway, there may be damage to the road surface below. MoDOT encourages all motorists to Turn Around! Don’t Drown!
To keep up with the latest road closures for flooding, incidents and roadwork, the Missouri Department of Transportation provides a Traveler Information Map. Motorists are advised to check the map or call 1-888 ASK MODOT (1-888-275-6636) before heading out to plan alternate routes, as needed.
NOW CLOSED:

Route DD southwest of Gower between SE 115 Road and SE Horn Road (Malden Creek)
