Cold temperatures postpone pool opening

Krug Pool FeatureDue to extremely cold water and outdoor temperatures and unfavorable weather conditions, the opening of the pools has been delayed.

According to a press release from the City of St. Joseph, the water temperature on Tuesday was 57 degrees, way too cold for safe and enjoyable swimming.  As a result, aquatic staff is monitoring the water temperature, outdoor weather temperature, and weather conditions. They will continue to do so until the water is at least 70 degrees and outdoor temperatures and weather conditions are appropriate for safe and enjoyable swimming.

May 28th is the tentative opening date for the pools, dependent on water and air temperatures and favorable weather conditions.

According to the City of St. Joseph Special Event and Communication Coordinator Julie Noel, the water portion of the lifeguard training class will be held at the YMCA Wednesday afternoon and future water training has been postponed.

“The water temperature yesterday was 57 degrees and the outdoor temperature was cold, making it unsafe conditions for the water portions of the course to be held at the aquatic center,” Noel said. “Water training will not begin at the aquatic center until the water, weather, and outdoor temperature are such that the Parks Department is certain that the water training will be safe.”

The May 28th opening date is tentative because the lifeguard training and returning lifeguard refresher sessions must be completed prior to the opening.

Health Dept. to offer free Hepititis screening

St Joseph Health Dept logoThe City of St. Joseph Health Department will offer free Hepatitis C screening in recognition of National Hepatitis Testing Day Thursday.

The department will offer free walk-in screening for Hepatitis C on Thursday, May 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Patee Market Health Center, 904 S. 10th Street, 2nd floor.

The screening is considered a “rapid test” and will be completed within 20 minutes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that millions of Americans have Hepatitis C and 75% of them are baby boomers born between 1945 and 1965. A “silent” disease, Hepatitis C often has no noticeable symptoms for years, even decades.

Hepatitis C is an infection of the liver, which is the body’s filter and helps rid the body of toxins. Infection with the Hepatitis C virus, HCV, can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, or even death. There is no vaccine for HCV but there are many successful treatments for Hepatitis C. Early screening and diagnosis is essential in preventing transmission of the disease and in easing the long-term health consequences of Hepatitis C.

The City of St. Joseph Health Department offers testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, and Hepatitis C, Monday through Friday, by appointment only, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. There is a $10.00 charge for the visit but treatment for curable sexually transmitted infections is free of charge.

Missing Person flyer released by Savannah PD in an effort to ask the public for help locating 47-year-old Tony Snodgrass

A Savannah man found injured in Andrew County last week after being reported missing has been charged with child molestation.

Tony Lee Snodgrass, 47 was charged Tuesday in Andrew County with two counts of felony first-degree child molestation.  One charge stemming from earlier this month, a second from Dec. of 2015.

As we previously reported, Snodgrass was reported missing by his family early last week after the Savannah Police Department said he left his home and no one heard from him.  He was located Wednesday with injuries and transported to Mosaic Life Care for evaluation.

According to probable cause documents on May 8 around 1 a.m. Officer Matthew McMillen took a report of a possible sexual assault.  The victim reported she had been staying at a friend’s house when the assault took place.

Snodgrass was then taken into police custody.

“I asked him if he remembered anything from the past 24 hours, he told me that he went to Kansas to lay asphalt and then he went to the bar in downtown Savannah to celebrate his birthday with his wife, he said after that he doesn’t remember,” McMillen said.

Court documents said Snodgrass blew a .191 BAC.

A second probable cause statement filed Tuesday, said a woman contacted the Savannah Police Department on Tuesday May 10 in reference to her 10-year-old daughter, alleging Snodgrass abused her.

“On Wednesday 5-11-16, Tony Snodgrass was found in a barn with his neck and wrist cut.  At the scene was a note that appeared to be written by Tony Snodgrass,” Chief of Police David Vincent said in court documents. “In that note he says he is sorry for what he did…and that he was drunk and thought it was his wife.”

Snodgrass is being held on $100,000 bail in the Andrew County Jail.  As of Tuesday afternoon online court documents do not list a court date.
