MSHP patch
A Cameron woman suffered moderate injuries in a single-vehicle crash in Clinton County Tuesday night.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Meredith Appling lost control of her vehicle on loose gravel along Witt Road south of Route A shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned.

Ms Appling, 18, was transported to Cameron Regional Medical Center with what were described at the scene as moderate injuries.

Authorities investigate inmate death

Missouri-Department-of-CorrectionsAn investigation continues into the death of a prison inmate in Cameron last week.

The Missouri Department of Corrections announced that a 49-year-old man serving a life prison sentence died Friday, May 6, at the Crossroads Correctional Center. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death of Timothy Adams.

Mr Adams has been held since February of 2009 for his convictions in Howard County on charges of being an accessory to first degree murder and armed criminal action.

Looney Complex pool renovations underway (VIDEO)

Looney Pool exterior

Renovations are underway at the swimming pool in the Looney Complex at Missouri Western State University. Crews are currently giving the pool deck and shell a new surface.

After that they’ll work out a new, direct entrance to the pool area from outside, and the locker rooms will get an upgrade.

Missouri Western’s Assistant Director of PR and Marketing Kent Heier tells us the pool will not be ready this summer, but should reopen before the city pools close.

“What’ll be nice is that we’ll be reopening in August,” Mr Heier said in an interview, “so just shortly before the municipal pools close for the season we will be reopening, and so people will have that recreational opportunity continuing through the off season.”

The pool will be open year-round, subject to reserved times for private events, school district practice and programming from the City of St Joseph.

The project came together thanks to partial funding from Buchanan County, which paid out $20,000 to jump start the repairs. The St Joseph School District has paid $22,000 to secure the pool for physical education and swim-team practices. The City of St Joseph will supplement the operational expenses of the pool. An accounting is expected in about a year to see just how much the city will contribute based on costs and revenues. Officials say the city’s share is capped at about $61,000.

The county money ensures that every resident of the county will have access to what is now a public swimming pool. But Mr. Heier says there will be fees.

“There will be fees for the general public using the pool,” he says. “Those fees are currently being discussed and will be set before the pool reopens in August.”

Heier says the fees will be similar to those being paid by patrons of the city’s neighborhood pools.

Fuel tax hike proposal advances to Missouri House

Rep. Joe Adams (D-University City)
Rep. Joe Adams (D-University City)
(Missourinet) – A proposal to ask Missourians whether the state’s fuel tax should be increase to pay for roads and bridges is on its way to the full state House.

University City Democrat Joe Adams was glad to see the proposal advance but calls it a “band aid.”

“I hope that this is a step forward, that we will start doing more to rebuild our infrastructure in this state so Missouri can be the economic engine it should be, that we are denying it its opportunity to be,” said Adams.

If approved by voters, the measure would increase the 17-cent fuel tax by 5.9-cents. Another House committee has added two provisions to the bill that would increase the tax on natural gas used in vehicles, and on any fuels used in vehicles in the future. If those aren’t removed, House passage would send it back to the Senate to consider the changes. The session ends Friday.

Leadership in the House Republican majority caucus does not favor a tax increase to fund transportation infrastructure.

Attorneys ask U.S. Supreme Court to block Missouri execution of Earl Forrest

(Missourinet) – It’s up to the U.S. Supreme Court whether Missouri will carry out the execution of a man convicted of 13 years ago killing three people, including a Dent County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Earl Forrest is scheduled to die by lethal injection at the state prison in Bonne Terre between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 5:59 p.m. Thursday. His attorneys, including Lance Sandage, have asked the Court to block the execution based on their argument that the death penalty is unconstitutional.

Forrest does not deny killing Chief Deputy Sharron Joann Barnes, Harriett Smith or Michael Wells in December 2002, but Sandage says the jury that sentenced him to die didn’t hear information about a brain injury he suffered years before.

“PET scans that were conducted showed that. That has really been the thrust of Mr. Forrest’s claim through post-conviction, was trial counsel’s failure to properly litigate that in the penalty phase of his trial,” Sandage told Missourinet.

The appeal to the Supreme Court, however, is solely that the death penalty violates the 8th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution. A request for clemency from Governor Jay Nixon (D) has also been filed. Other appeals for a stay have already been denied.

Prosecutors said Forrest had gone to home of Smith to demand she keep her end of a deal in which he introduced her to a source of methamphetamine. He killed her and Wells at her home and killed Deputy Barnes in a shootout with law enforcement at his own home. He also shot his then-girlfriend and then-Dent County Sheriff Bob Wofford, both of whom survived. He was sentenced to death for each of the three murders.

St. Joseph summer bus program for kids starting this week

2016 Transit Program
2016 Transit Program

The city of St. Joseph’s summer bus program will kick off another year after more than 1800 children used the transit program last summer.

“Last summer we introduced a summer youth pass. We called it ‘My Summer Ride,'” said Mary Gaston, General Manager for St. Joseph Transit. “From the last day of school in May until school went back in August the pass was good for unlimited rides.”

Gaston said the program is coming back again this summer. Passes are currently on sale for $30 and are valid from May 12 to Aug. 13.

“We were getting calls back in March asking if we were going to have the pass again,” she said.

The pass comes with some additional perks too. This year it includes a free ticket to a Mustangs home game, one free open gym pass to the St. Joseph REC Center, One admission to the Remington Nature Center, One free swim at the Aquatic Park, and $5 off youth swim sessions or sport session at the YMCA.

“Summertime kids have more flexible schedules, they do have places they want to go, especially that teenager group. The ones who are old enough to manage themselves on transit, find out where the bus stop is and that kind of stuff but they’re not driving yet,” Gaston said. “Using the bus to get around to wherever they’re going. Wither they’re going to swimming or to the library or wherever they’re going.”

The passes are for children age 6-18 but anyone under age 9 is required to be accompanied by a rider who is at least 12-years-old.  Gaston said the hope is to get children involved in utilizing the transit system.

Tickets are being sold at St. Joseph Transit located at 702 S. 5th St., City Hall, and HyVee at the Service Desk.
