Maryville R2 district logoFunding to secure entrances at Maryville Middle School and Northwest Technical School has been awarded.

The Missouri School Boards’ Association through its Missouri Center for Education said it has awarded a school safety grant in the amount of $7,155 to the Maryville R-II School District.

The District competed with other public schools in the state for a limited amount of funding aimed to enhance school safety in local school districts.  More than $400,000 in grants was awarded to 49 school districts in Missouri, to support school safety related programs and initiatives.

“Providing a safe and secure learning environment for students is a top priority for all Missouri school districts and these grants will help fund projects and programs designed to do just that,” said Paul Fennewald, CES Director.

A Kansas man was sentenced Monday to 30 years in federal prison for trafficking cocaine in Junction City and Manhattan. U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says Albert Dwayne Banks, 33, Junction, City, Kan. was convicted on one count of conspiracy to distribute more than 280 grams of crack cocaine, and six counts of distribution.

Last month, Banks was sentenced to life. At Monday’s hearing, U.S. District Judge Daniel D. Crabtree corrected the sentence by reducing it to 30 years. He said he changed the sentence based on his consideration of aggravating factors in the sentence.

Banks was convicted in June in a jury trial in Kansas City. During trial, prosecutors presented evidence that in late 2012 and early 2013 agents of Kansas Bureau of Investigation and detectives from the Junction City Police Department investigated a large crack cocaine trafficking organization in Junction City and Manhattan. The organization was led by defendants Albert Banks and co-defendant Anthony Thompson, who acquired drugs from three different suppliers and sold the drugs to distributors who resold them on the streets.

Officers took several reports in regard to houses, sheds, and vehicles having been spray painted with the words “dragons” or a spray painted depiction of a monkey. The spray paint colors were blue, black, or silver in all areas.

The police department announced Tuesday that the case is now closed and the three juveniles have been interviewed and turned over to the Livingston County Juvenile Office for further court proceedings.

The department said it is asking any citizen that received property damage connected to this case to contact them with the estimates of how much it cost to repair or replace any damaged property.

Gas prices expected to continue to fall

gas pricesGas prices are expected to fall below the $2 mark across the nation for the first time since 2009.

According to AAA pump prices have fallen for 29 of the past 31 days. As of Monday the national average is less than a penny higher than the 2015 low (January 26), and should soon fall below the $2 per gallon mark for the first time since 2009. It said Monday’s average price of $2.03 represents a savings of one cent per gallon on the week and 19 cents on the month. Significant yearly savings persist, and gas prices are discounted by 65 cents per gallon compared to this same date last year.

Missouri’s average for regular unleaded Monday was $1.81 a gallon, the same as this time last week and 28 cents lower than a month ago. In St. Joseph the average came in at $1.79, 1 cent lower than a week ago and a drop of 27 cents in a month.

AAA said OPEC’s decision at its meeting last week to sustain its current production levels sent ripples through the global oil market and has contributed to lower oil prices. The cartel is not scheduled to reconvene until June 2016, and in the interim the imbalance between supply and demand will likely persist.
