Student arrested after Savannah High School lockdown

Savannah R3 Savage mascot logoA student is in custody after authorities said a threat was made at Savannah High School Monday morning.

Sgt. Corey Root with MSHP said a 16-year-old girl is being referred to juvenile authorities after Savannah High School officials placed the school on lockdown.

“Around 8-thirty this morning, school officials received what they believed was a threat for student safety. Therefore they notified law enforcement,” Sgt. Root said. “Savannah Police Department, Andrew County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol responded.”

The Savannah R-III school district confirmed in a news release that a threatening note was found in the girl’s restroom Monday morning.

The district said by 9 a.m. a student was identified as a possible suspect and was isolated in the office.

“There was a threat that was made and obviously all threats are taken as credible and the response from local law enforcement was made,” Sgt. Root said.

The district said movement in the high school was restricted and students and staff remained in classrooms for about 45 minutes with several law enforcement officials present throughout the school until the possible suspect was identified.

20,000 pounds of meat donated to feed those in need

Second Harvest logoMore than 20,000 pounds of meat has been donated to the Second Harvest Community Food Bank by Triumph Foods.

It’s the second large donation of meat in a year’s time. Second Harvest said six months ago, Triumph donated nearly 17,000 pounds of meat to the food bank for distribution.

The donation includes pork ribs, loins, hams and other cuts of meat and is enough food to help provide over 16,600 meals across the 19 counties Second Harvest serves in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas. This area currently has more than 54,000 individuals who aren’t sure where they will get their next meal.

“Second Harvest is extremely pleased to accept the donation from Triumph Foods. When a local producer donates such a large quantity it is a great benefit to our partner agencies and the communities they serve,” said Chad Higdon, Executive Director at Second Harvest. “Because their generosity many families within our service territory will have access to high quality protein during this time of the year. We look forward to our continued relationship with Triumph Foods.”

Christmas donations “dangerously” low at Salvation Army

The Salvation Army in St. Joseph said it’s falling alarmingly behind on its Christmas fund and toy drives.

The Salvation Army announced Monday that its Annual Red Kettle Campaign is well behind this time last year. A shortage of bell ringers and the rainy start of the season has placed the effort more than $10,000 behind this time last year (2014-$28,046) (2015-$18,250.). The overall Christmas goal for The Salvation Army for 2015 is $375,000.00, with $125,000 of that goal being raised through the kettle portion.

The agency said funds are currently dangerously low and adds that the funds raised at Christmas are critical to the year around ministries and services provided to local residents and families.

The Salvation Army Angel Tree Donations are markedly low as well. Last year the Angel Trees provided for more than 400 children. This year, applications indicate that over 660 children have applied for assistance. Salvation Army Angel trees and/or toy collection barrels or boxes are located at Slim for Life, Home Depot, Cracker Barrel, Bank Midwest, and the three Burger King stores in Saint Joseph. The agency said the public is invited to drop toys off at KQ2 TV as well or at The Salvation Army, 602 Messanie.

Flags to fly half-staff for Pearl Harbor Day

Flags will be flown at half-staff Monday to commemorate those who died or were wounded during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. A 1996 State law designates the date as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and directs that on that day, flags be flown at half-staff by all state agencies and political subdivisions of the state.

“Seventy years ago, World War II ended with the surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri,” Gov. Nixon said. “Today, our state’s namesake battleship stands silent watch over the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, where America was drawn into the war. The lowered flags on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day remind us of the sacrifices that have been made by our men and women in uniform throughout many generations to guard our nation, including the sacrifices of those who are serving now.”

Local business suggests winter cow herd care

As cold temperatures drop one St. Joseph Business is looking towards cattle herds.

BioZyme® Inc. said cold temperatures significantly raises energy requirements for cows. The animal nutrition company said undeveloped winter hair coats, wet hides and wind all combine to magnify this increase in energy requirements. It said the combination of calving cows and colder environmental conditions can easily result in producers not providing enough feed energy and cows losing weight.

“The bottom line is, early cold stress can result in a snowball effect if left unchecked. Keeping cows in good condition in fall and early winter ultimately helps insulate cows and minimize the amount of feed required later in the winter season,” said Kevin Glaubius, BioZyme® Inc. Director of Nutrition and Technical Sales. “Now is the time to take an honest evaluation of body condition and match your feeding program to the needs of your cows.”

The company suggests producers feed higher quality hay with more energy, feed cattle a supplement that improves digestibility of their feed, move cows to locations with protection from the wind and wet weather, and match animal nutrition requirements to the quality of forage.
