UPDATE 3:12 p.m. – An accident involving two semis blocked traffic at a busy south-side intersection Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Chris McBane with the St. Joseph Police Department said one semi was northbound on 59 highway and another was eastbound on Alabama around 2 p.m.

“The semi on Alabama pulled out and hit the side of the other trailer causing the semi on 59 highway to overturn onto its side and lose its load of hay-bales,” McBane said.

The driver of the overturned semi was a 34-year-old man from Wisconsin.  He was taken to Mosaic Life Care for treatment of minor injuries.

CHILLICOTHE, Mo. – The Chillicothe Fire Department and Hedrick Medical Center Emergency Department teamed up to raise money to help fight cancer.

The team recently presented a check in the amount of $7917.46 to Lindy Chapman, Foundation Development Officer for the Hedrick Medical Center Foundation. The money was raised by a boot drive fundraiser during Chautauqua in the Park, and from breast cancer awareness t-shirt sales.

The funds raised will be used to help fund the Oncology Nurse Navigator Program at Hedrick Medical Center. Hedrick implemented a program in early 2015 that focuses on easing the physical, spiritual, emotional, and financial hardships of living with and beyond cancer. The program is funded by donations.

“This fundraiser was once again a great success,” said Bev Shaul, manager of Emergency Services at Hedrick Medical Center. “We would like to thank all of the employees, businesses, and citizens who bought a t-shirt and/or donated during our boot drive.”

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University received a Rural Business Development Grant Tuesday to aid in its future agricultural sciences programming.

Janie Dunning, the Missouri director for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, visited Northwest Missouri State University Tuesday to discuss future agricultural sciences programming with University leaders and to announce its receipt of the grant worth $39,735.

The grant award will support research led by Dr. Nigel Hoilett, assistant professor of agricultural sciences, in partnership with Hampton Alternative Energy of Triplett, Mo.

Hampton uses Missouri’s first beef cattle anaerobic digester to produce renewable energy. The grant will allow Hoilett and his team to test a byproduct of the anaerobic digester as a liquid organic fertilizer for the field turf and produce industries. The grant will assess both the effectiveness and the marketability of the product.

“Partnership is something we value,” Dunning said. “By Northwest Missouri State University working with Hampton Alternative Energy Products, they are creating more opportunities for the advancement of agricultural resources. Their renewable organic fertilizer will be a valuable asset to farmers and producers by providing a more eco-friendly way to operate. Rural Development is pleased to partner with these organizations that both recognize the positive impact renewable organic products can have on the environment and the economy.”

Hoilett said the project is an important opportunity to partner with another organization in an effort to advance agriculture practices while providing Northwest students with profession-based experiences.

The price here is going down just as the national average started to rise, reversing three weeks of daily price declines. The average across Missouri is $2.03/gallon.

The national average price of gas has increased for two days in a row to $2.19 per gallon, which ended a 22-day streak of declining prices.

Despite the end to the slide, the national average has fallen for 24 of the past 30 days. It continues to sit at its lowest price for this date since 2004.

AAA says pump prices are down fractions of a penny week-over-week and have declined by 10 cents month-over-month. Motorists are also benefitting from significant yearly savings, with today’s price 80 cents per gallon less than a year ago.

Consumers in South Carolina ($1.87) and Alabama ($1.90) are paying the nation’s lowest averages at the pump, and a total of nine states are posting averages below $2 per gallon.
