Royals fans urged to be on the lookout for fake tickets

Jefferson City, Mo. – With many Missourians attempting to buy tickets to the Kansas City Royals World Series games, Attorney General Chris Koster is advising fans to be aware of the potential for scams and counterfeit tickets.

Koster warned that scammers may make multiple copies of the same printed-out ticket or design tickets that look real to sell to unsuspecting fans. Scammers may also promise tickets through websites such as Craigslist, and then fail to provide them after receiving payment.

“Tickets to the World Series games are in high demand, which creates an environment for scammers and counterfeiters to take advantage of consumers in the secondary market,” said Koster. “We want Royals fans planning to watch a game in person to get what they’ve paid for.”

Koster recommends that fans:

· Stick with trusted secondary market vendors, such as StubHub and Ticketmaster. These sites offer buyer guarantees that protect you against unscrupulous sellers. Be wary of purchasing tickets from someone you don’t know on Craigslist, eBay, or other similar marketplace or auction sites.

· Shop securely. If you plan to buy online, verify that the website is a trusted site before giving your credit card information. Check to see that the URL begins with https:// and a lock to indicate that it’s a secured site. Only buy from a ticket reseller that provides clear details about the terms of the transaction. Always use a credit card so you have some recourse; do not use cash, debit card, prepaid money card or wire transfer.

· Be especially wary of paying cash to a stranger for tickets. If you’ve been sold counterfeit tickets you’ll have a very hard time finding the scammer again and won’t get your money back.

· Check guarantee policies on online sales. Stick with vendors that guarantee refunds if you receive invalid tickets or don’t get them at all.

· Stay away from sellers who ask you to wire money or make your purchase using a pre-paid card. These are signs of a scam.

· Inspect your tickets to look for signs that they are copies or fakes.

Royals fans can search the National Association of Ticket Brokers website for secondary market vendors that offer authenticity guarantees on the tickets they sell. Koster said Missourians can also call his Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-392-8222 if they suspect a scam.

From excess to success, pig poop project moves to phase two (video)

A St Louis company hopes to convert the nearly intolerable odor of pork farming into the sweet smell of success.

Roeslein Alternative Energy and Smithfield hope to change manure into methane into money.

The companies’ $120 million initiative in Albany, Missouri enters phase two this week.

Impermeable synthetic covers are now installed on nearly half of the 88 existing manure lagoons at nine Smithfield farms in Northern Missouri, capturing methane from one of the largest concentrations of finishing hogs in the Midwest. The covers turn the lagoons into anaerobic digesters that produce a lot of biogas. Up until now, that biogas has been flared.

Phase II of the project will see equipment installed to remove impurities from the biogas to create pipeline-quality natural gas. A new interconnection being installed at the farm will take that gas to the national pipeline grid. Duke Energy in North Carolina has agreed to purchase a portion of the RNG to help meet clean energy requirements for power generation.

When the project is complete several hundred million cubic feet of RNG will be available for similar transmission each year.

Officials with the companies launch the new phase of the project on Wednesday under tight security at farm near Albany.

Holt County gets “good” audit rating

State Auditor LogoMissouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has released an audit of the government of Holt County.

The audit received a performance rating of “good,” but identified some areas of concern.

Auditors recommended improvements to accounting procedures in the sheriff’s office.

The audit report was critical of the procedures related to operation of a commissary where inmates purchase snacks and personal items. The sheriff also handles money received for concealed carry weapon permits, bonds posted for bail, and other various items.

The report also identified threats to the security of information in some county offices related to password and computer controls. Employees in multiple county offices, including offices of the county collector, prosecuting attorney, recorder of deeds and county assessor, are not required to periodically change their passwords, putting accounts at risk for unauthorized access.

The Citizens Summary and the Complete Audit Report is available here.

New signage and new flashing yellow arrows on Frederick

Flashing yellow left turn arrowThey’ve changed the advisory sign on Frederick, and they’ve changed some of the stoplights too.   Those flashing arrows are planned at four stoplights along Frederick, and were due by November 1, but Monday morning, at least one of them was active.

The new signals include the flashing yellow arrow for left turns, which indicate you should wait for traffic to clear and then proceed with caution.

They indicate the same traffic status a solid green globe would in a left turn lane.  Experts say the flashing yellow arrows are safer because they’re better at getting your attention.

Weekend fires keep St Joe Fire Department busy

SJFD patchA family using a electric generator in a home with no utilities must now find a new place to live. That generator caught fire shortly after noon on Sunday, sparking the house at 800 North Fifth Street. The house sustained about $20,000 damage.

It was the third damaging fire of the weekend for the St Joseph Fire Department. On Saturday, a half-dozen people were displaced when fire damaged their home at 614 South 11th. No one was home at the time.

Shortly after that, another house fire was reported, at 2222 Seneca Street. Six people safely evacuated.

The cause of Saturday’s fires have not been determined. American Red Cross was called in to assist residents.

Apple wraps up Bus Safety week with tips and search for drivers

school busThe St. Joseph School District bus provider is urging safety in the wake of bus safety week and searching for more drivers.

Bus Safety Week took place Oct. 19 – 23.  However, Apple Bus Company Northwest Regional Manager Kim Green said safety is always a top priority.

Sometimes it is small choices, like getting to your bus stop on time, that can help us keep students safe,” Green said.

She offers these tips:

  1. Always be at the stop five minutes before the scheduled pick up time. This may not seem like a safety tip, but a late student running after a bus can be a real safety concern, as the driver can’t see them.

  1. Do not rough house and play around at the bus stop, as someone could fall or trip in front of a bus.

  1. Stay back off the road, and don’t approach the bus until it comes to a complete stop. If crossing in front of the bus, make eye contact with the driver and wait for the driver to give the okay to cross.

  1. Always cross in front of the bus – never behind the bus, which is a blind spot.  Walk 10 feet (10 giant steps) in front of the bus.

  1. There must always be a responsible adult present for a kindergartner or a first grader.

Apple Bus is currently looking for drivers.  Green said Parents are especially encouraged to apply.

“Bus driving has parent-friendly hours and children below school age can ride along,” Green said.

To apply contact Apple Bus at (816) 273-0041.
