UPDATE: Stockyards Expressway back open after semi accident

2700 Stockyards expressway

(UPDATED) – Stockyards Expressway was shutdown Tuesday morning after a semi took a turn too sharp causing some issues.

Doug Loehner with the St. Joseph Police Department said around 7:30 a.m. the 43-year-old man driving the semi tried to make a turn onto US-759 in the 2700 block but turned too tight and hit a support which took one of the semi’s tires of the wheel and knocked down a power line.

Originally the report the semi had been believed to have ruptured a gas main.

“They thought the gas main was hit but it was not it was air coming out of the tire,” Loehner said.

Southbound traffic was diverted at Oak and Hickey streets for about an hour.

The driver was issued a ticket for improper method of turn.

CFO: school district’s Kinkade painting could fetch three times the purchase price at auction

CFO Beau Musser says a lot of people have expressed interest in buying the painting
CFO Beau Musser says a lot of people have expressed interest in buying the painting

In a legal notice published last week, the St Joseph School District announced it will be accepting bids on eBay for the Thomas Kinkade painting “City by the Bay.” The district’s Chief Financial Officer Beau Musser says there are a few reasons for the sale.

“First and foremost the district is looking at assets district-wide that we no longer have a use for, and we’re looking at disposing of those,” Musser said in an interview.

“Obviously, the painting was noted in state audit report, and is really no use for educational purposes, and so we just thought we might be able to get our money back by putting it out to the public for sale.”

Musser says the painting could very well prove to be a good investment.

“I have a friend in town, a local lawyer, who is the one who originally approached me, and he said we’re going to get a lot more than what we paid for it. His estimate was $5,000, so that’d be fantastic.”

Musser says he’s been approached by several people who are interested in buying the piece.

“First off, it’s obviously a decent little painting for a Kinkade with a nice frame, but, it’s for better or worse, a part of St Joe history, with everything that’s surrounded the turmoil with the St Joe School District.”

A painting by Thomas Kinkade that was paid for by the St Joseph School District wound up on the wall in the office of the district’s Chief Operating Officer. It also wound up in the audit report by the Missouri State Auditor’s Office that gave the district a first-ever rating of “poor.”

Now that former COO Rick Hartigan has been fired, the district is putting the painting up for bids in an auction on Ebay.

In a legal notice published last week in the St Joseph News Press, the school district announced it will be accepting bids on the Thomas Kinkade painting “City by the Bay.”

According to the announcement, the framed painting is signed by the artist and has a certificate of authenticity that will be presented to the bid winner. The district posted a picture of the painting on the SJSD Web site.  (Select “City by the Bay.jpeg here. )

The district’s audit report revealed $3,378 in new furniture for Mr. Hartigan’s office. That included more than $1,500 for the painting.

The price noted on eBay is $1,679.95.    The auction is scheduled between August 12 and August 19 (here).

Depending upon whom you ask, the artist is the subject of admiration or derision. According to Wikipedia, he is notable for the mass marketing of his work as printed reproductions and other licensed products via The Thomas Kinkade Company. It has been estimated that 1 in every 20 American homes owns a copy of one of his paintings.

The school district’s Chief Financial Officer Beau Musser says they could see a tidy profit in the auction. Find out more here.

Paving work on I-29 delayed again

i 29ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A resurfacing project scheduled for Interstate 29 in Andrew and Buchanan counties has been delayed again, due to weather.

Contractors working with the Missouri Department of Transportation had planned to begin milling and repaving I-29 between Business Route 71 in Andrew County and 1.5 miles south of Route O in Buchanan County on Monday, July 27, but weather delays on other projects have once again pushed the start date back. The contractor hopes to be able to begin milling and repaving in the northbound lanes on Wednesday, Aug. 19. All work is planned to begin no earlier than 6 p.m. each evening, after peak travel times, and should be completed each day by 6 a.m. One lane in each direction will remain open.

The on and off ramps will also be resurfaced throughout this section of interstate. Every effort will be made to keep all ramps open during the work, but some closures may be required to ensure the safety of both motorists and workers. If a ramp closure is planned, advance notice will be provided.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The bridge replacement project on U.S. Route 59 at the Bankers Crossing Bridge in Buchanan County has been hit with some weather-related delays. The roadway is closed at the bridge as contractors tie the new bridge into the existing roadway.

Originally, contractors working with the Missouri Department of Transportation had planned to open the road and the new bridge as early as Thursday, Aug. 13, but weather delays has pushed the opening back. The contractor is now looking at a possible opening date of Aug. 28. All work is weather permitting and schedules are subject to change.

The bridge replacement project began earlier this year as contractors built a new, wider bridge alongside the old bridge, which was built in 1936, was only 24-feed wide with no shoulders, was structurally deficient and had limited sight distance due to the curve of the roadway. The new bridge had added shoulders and realigns the roadway

St Joe gas prices top Missouri statewide average by 13 cents

AAA smallGasoline prices are falling at the fastest rate since January due to cheaper crude oil costs and the resolution of some refinery issues. That’s the word from the driving club AAA, which reported the national average price of gas has dropped for 16 days in row for a total of 11 cents per gallon.

The national average price of gas was just over $2.59 per gallon Monday morning, which is the lowest average for this time of year since 2009.

The statewide average in Missouri for a gallon of regular no-lead gasoline was $2.406. That’s more than a penny cheaper than the day before, six cents cheaper than a week ago, 16 cents cheaper than a month ago, and about 87 cents cheaper than the average last year at this time.

The average price in St Joseph is about 13 cents more than the statewide average at $2.539.

The average across Kansas was slightly higher than $2.44/gallon.
