Northwest Health Services hires new CEO

NHS-Logo-copy-01Northwest Health Services announced Thursday that its Board of Directors has hired a new Chief Executive Officer.

Matt Younger started the position Monday.

Younger grew up in Holt County and said he looks forward to leading the organization that provided his own family care as a child.

“We always went to a Northwest Health Services clinic growing up,” said Younger. “The organization was formed when I was young and throughout my life, it has been known as a people-minded organization that supports its communities.”

Northwest Health Services is an organization of Federally Qualified Community Health Centers (FQHCs) with locations spread over 16 counties.

Terry Steinbecker, Board President said the board is excited to bring Younger on.

“The board looks forward to Matt’s leadership and guidance in a changing health care environment as our organization continues to provide high-quality patient care in the communities we serve,” said Steinbecker.

Younger’s most recent experience came as a Director of Operations for Platinum Health Care – a corporation that acquires and operates nursing homes. Younger supervised nursing home administrators in Missouri, ensuring high-quality care. Earlier, he worked at the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) as the Administrator of the Section for Long-term Care Regulation. There, he oversaw the licensing and inspection of 1,143 facilities in Missouri.

Younger said he is glad to be back home and excited to make a positive impact on the communities where he was raised.

“Northwest Health is an organization with a unique mission and identity,” said Younger. “We have a charter higher than commerce. Northwest Health Services is located in areas where care is needed but scarce, and improves access to care for Americans regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.”

SE Nebraska shooting suspect arrested after SWAT response in Kansas

A northeastern Kansas police chief is singing the praises of “Nixle.” Chief John Calhoon of the Horton, Kansas Police Department says they used the alert system Thursday night, urging residents to stay indoors because of a standoff involving a shooting suspect.

“We utilize Nixle which is a free, opt-in, message service for emergency alerts, community alerts, etc, and I just figured that is our quickest way to get the word out,” Calhoon said.

Calhoon says his office received a tip from Nebraska authorities that the suspect, Desiderio Hernandez, might be in Horton with a relative. Shortly thereafter they located the Falls City, Nebraska man in a mobile home at 510 W. 9th Street in Horton. When Hernandez spotted the officers, Calhoon says the suspect barricaded himself inside the mobile home.

Two Horton officers kept an eye on the front and back doors while they asked for additional help, Calhoon said.

“There were two officers there immediately, and then as the evening continued, we ended up with well over, probably, 30 law enforcement officers, into the wee hours of the morning,” Calhoon said. “We had a lot of help.”

“I made a decision to contact the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office and their SWAT team.”

Deputies from Jackson and Brown counties in Kansas, along with Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers and a paramedic response team were also on the scene.

“We did eventually end up using some flash-bangs, and finally started getting some movement in the trailer, and were able to do some negotiating, and then, obviously, when their eyes were on him they were able to deploy a taser,” Calhoon said.

“From that point they were able to go in and get him.”

Authorities in Falls City, Nebraska charge Mr Hernandez with second-degree murder for a shooting in Falls City Wednesday. The victim, 31-year-old Joseph DeBella Jr of Falls City, was in critical condition at the Bryan Trauma Center West Campus in Lincoln Thursday afternoon, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

A judge in Brown County Kansas was expected to hear an extradition request Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, state troopers from Nebraska were in Horton Thursday morning, looking for evidence in the shooting case. Horton would not say if their search included recovery of the weapon allegedly used in Falls City. Horton said at the time the taser was deployed, Mr Hernandez was not armed.

Missouri woman arrested after crash for tazing driver

NE IA Hwy 2 bridge over Missouri R at Nebraska CityNEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities say a Missouri woman was cited for assault after using a stun gun on the driver of the vehicle in which they were traveling.

Jolie Hoefling was treated for minor injuries after the incident.

It’s unclear whether Hoefling has an attorney who could comment on her behalf.

Otoe County Sheriff James Gress told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Hoefling and Miles Sprague, both of Lexington, Missouri, were arguing on July 18 as they drove west on the Nebraska-Iowa Highway 2 bridge. Reports say Hoefling then pulled out a stun gun and shot Sprague.

The SUV struck a concrete barrier and eventually rolled over into a ditch on the Nebraska side.

Gress says Sprague refused to be hospitalized.

The St. Joseph Police Department held a press conference Thursday morning to confirm that a man wanted in a murder case has surrendered to authorities in Columbia.

“His arrest took place without incident, he surrendered himself peacefully,” said Capt. Jeff Wilson with the St. Joseph Police Department.

Charles Leroy Coats Jr., 32 of St. Joseph was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in connection with the Saturday shooting death of Jason Ginn, 32 of St. Joseph.  Coats surrendered to officers in Columbia, Mo. about three hours away from St. Joseph around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Police have been searching for him since he became a person of interest shortly after the shooting took place.

“The St. Joseph Police Department has spent upwards of around several hundred man hours working on this case,” Wilson said. “Running down and investigating over 100 leads, mostly of which were generated by members of our community.”

Due to leads from the public Wilson said Columbia had been narrowed down as a place of interest in Coats whereabouts.

“We are happy the suspect is in custody, the case is not concluded.  There’s a lot of work left to be done in cases like this,” Wilson said. “But having a violent offender off the streets definitely is a positive thing for us.”

Wilson said police will be making arrangements for Coats to be transported back to St. Joseph.

A lengthy police standoff in Horton, Kansas is over, and officials have arrested the man inside, believed to be a shooting suspect from southeastern Nebraska.

A shooting in Falls City, Nebraska led to the standoff in Horton. Nebraska officers identified the shooting suspect as 34-year-old Desiderio Hernandez of Falls City. Another Falls City resident, Joseph Debella Jr. was transported to an area hospital with critical gunshot wounds Wednesday.

Police in Horton warned residents with an emergency text message to stay indoors. Streets in the area were barricaded. Horton police, Brown County deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers were on the scene for several hours.
