The City of Atchison, Kansas appears to be following in the footsteps, or paw steps, of St Joseph, as another park in the region goes to the dogs.

A workshop and public meeting is planned next month during which officials hope to get a better idea of what residents want to see in such a park.

Earlier this year, the city selected a location near 14th and Laramie streets, the site of an old baseball field. Supporters of converting the site say there’s water on site and it’s near a residential area with parking nearby. Officials say they hope to have the fencing completed by late summer.

The public meeting is planned at Atchison City Hall, in the City Commission Room, on August 11 starting at 7pm.

Pallid Sturgeon larvae confirms spawning below Gavins Point Dam

Pallid Sturgeon larvaBELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — Scientists say that three fish larvae captured from the Missouri River last year have been confirmed as those of the endangered pallid sturgeon.

A U.S. Geological Survey news release issued Thursday says the 1- to 3-day-old larvae were among hundreds of larval shovelnose sturgeon and paddlefish collected near Bellevue on May 30, 2014.

Survey scientists say the discovery indicates that pallid sturgeon successfully spawned in the lower Missouri River downstream of Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota.

But the scientists warned that the successful spawning does not necessarily indicate that the species is on its way to recovery.

Scientist Aaron DeLonay says the pallid sturgeon population is still small and that reproduction sufficient to increase the population has not been documented.

Nebraska nuclear power plant back online

Fort Calhoun1OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Officials say the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant has returned to full power following a shutdown for repairs for a water leak. The Omaha Public Power District says the plant returned to full power Thursday afternoon.

The plant was taken offline on July 20th to repair a water leak in a reactor coolant pump after a seal failed. The utility says the coolant water that leaked was contained inside the plant and treated.

It first came back onto the grid Wednesday afternoon and the power output was slowly increased.

Workers used the shutdown to perform other needed maintenance and repairs. Officials say the outage did not affect electrical service to homes and businesses in the region.

Fort Calhoun sits along the Missouri River about 20 miles north of Omaha.

Meth suspect who called cops on co-defendants sentenced to 10 years in prison

Anthony Grayson
Anthony Grayson
An Excelsior Springs man will serve ten years in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy to make methamphetamine. Anthony Grayson was arrested in July of 2013 after he called police for help and gave them permission to enter his house.

Federal prosecutors say Grayson’s co-defendants were homeless and were staying at Grayson’s home. But Mr Grayson says Co-defendant Glenn Allen DiFalco had threatened him.

Grayson met officers about a half-mile from his residence. He said he feared for his life because Mr DiFalco had a gun. He gave the officers permission to enter his house and arrest DiFalco.

As officers were speaking to Grayson, DiFalco and a third co-defendant Clarissa Cooper approached in a Dodge truck. The vehicle abruptly turned and drove away and officers began pursuing them. When DiFalco’s vehicle stopped in a dead-end cul-de-sac, Cooper fled from the vehicle on foot and was chased by officers, who apprehended and arrested her. DiFalco was also arrested.

Officials say Mr DiFalco’s truck was so completely filled with debris and clutter that officers couldn’t adequately search it at the scene, but they did turn up an airsoft gun, drug paraphernalia, and some meth. They impounded the vehicle, and an additional search turned up approximately 80,000 “Cold Buster” pills containing a key ingredient in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Officers returned to Grayson’s home following the vehicle pursuit and observed, in plain view, numerous items of drug paraphernalia commonly used to smoke and manufacture methamphetamine. They also found an explosive device believed to be a booby trap.

Co-defendants DiFalco, 52, and Cooper, 47, have pleaded guilty to their roles in the conspiracy. DiFalco was sentenced to seven years and six months in federal prison without parole and Cooper was sentenced to time served.

On March 3, 2015, Grayson was found guilty at trial of participating in a conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, attempting to manufacture meth, possessing pseudoephedrine to manufacture meth and maintaining a drug house. He was sentenced by U.S. Chief District Judge Greg Kays to 10 years in federal prison without parole. Grayson has been in federal custody since his initial arrest on July 16, 2013.

The Salvation Army said fans donated for those in need are quickly going out the door.

Wednesday the agency received a donation of 55 box fans from Westlake ACE Hardware to give to those in need. As of noon Thursday 15 fans had already been given away.

“Heat poses a very real danger to the elderly, families with young children and those with medical issues,” said LeeAnn Hobson with the Salvation Army. “Fans are critical to keeping those without air conditioning or who are on a fixed income comfortable and safe during the hot summer months.”

The Salvation Army located at 602 Messanie St. is providing the fans to qualified applicants on a first come, first serve basis.
