Amish parents tip authorities, now teens are cleaning up after kegger

Amish keggerActing on a tip from parents, Livingston County authorities are investigating a messy keg party held by teenage members of the area’s Amish community.

Sheriff Steve Cox says Amish leaders and parents are united in their desire for these young people to learn from their experience.

The minors are being required to clean the entire area, apologize to the land owner, and to the business where the alcohol was purchased.

Sheriff Cox says the incident report notes five (mostly empty) beer kegs, which were seized. The sheriff says nearly $1,000 was paid for kegs and deposits.

The investigation began when parents reported learning that minor children had allegedly been involved in a youth alcohol party on private property without landowner consent to even be there. Cox says the party location in a remote area of northwestern Livingston County was “significantly littered” with various alcohol beverage containers and other items.

The sheriffs of Daviess and Grundy counties met with Cox and the Amish leaders in regard to this incident to discuss cooperation to prevent future problems. Cox said all three sheriffs commended the parents and leaders “for their proactive and positive involvement with the young people in this incident.”

Cox says he has a suspect identified for alleged supplying the beer, but by Wednesday morning no charges had been filed.

Beginning this fall, a new class at Hillyard Technical Center will offer a Manufacturing Technician Certificate. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Patt Lilly says the program will train students for positions that local manufacturers have trouble filling.

“I would suspect, knowing what I know of our current situation in Saint Joe, that the kids coming out of high school with this Manufacturing Technician Certificate will find a job easily and I would suspect a pretty well-paying job,” Lilly said.

Lilly says the first two-semester class starting this fall will train 15 to 20 students, but the program could easily expand in the future.

Lilly says the Saint Joseph School District, Missouri Western, and Innovation Stockyard worked together to create the program. It will use a curriculum that is already working well in Virginia.

AT&T to light up smartphone radio!

AT&T1AT&T will include FM chip activation in its smartphone device specifications for 2016.

That’s according to to NextRadio and TagStation, broadcast entities that promote an FM listening app and station support infrastructure.

“This is a big milestone for the radio industry and shows working together and supporting this initiative is paying off,” the company said in an email signed “The NextRadio + TagStation Team.”

“The change is made by the OEMs (smartphone makers), and by having the support of carriers like Sprint and AT&T putting it in their specifications it increases the probability of getting the FM chip turned on,” it stated in an email.

“We already have experienced handset makers activating it across all carriers (for example, new models of HTC One and Moto phones) and AT&T’s request fuels the support and progress being made.”

Next, NextRadio said, AT&T will communicate the request to manufacturers to activate existing FM chips in Android smartphones. “We will be working over the next few months with their smartphone partners to begin the work of activating FM Radio and NextRadio on as many devices as possible. The activation timing is expected for all new Android smartphones releasing in 2016, with a chance of some phones being ready by year-end.”
