Infected puppy prompts rabies precautions in Nodaway County

Labrador puppiesDozens of people in Nodaway County must undergo painful rabies vaccinations after a puppy tested positive for the disease.

The Nodaway County Health Department says the puppy was purchased by a breeder in Iowa. Officials in Iowa notified the owners after another puppy from the same litter tested positive.

The nine-week-old Labrador retriever puppy in Nodaway County has been euthanized. Officials did not identify the Missouri family that bought the puppy, but said they do not live in Maryville.

Officials in Nodaway County took no chances in ordering people to get the rabies shots. Rabies can quickly turn lethal for humans who are infected.
