Sedalia man serving life sentence for murder dies in custody

getPublicFrontal (1)An inmate serving his first year of a life sentence for murder has died in custody in Cameron, Mo.

67-year-old Joseph Arbeiter was admitted into the Missouri Department of Correction on Dec. 18, 2014.

He was serving a  life without parole sentence for first-degree murder, armed criminal action, first-degree sodomy or attempted sodomy, first-degree rape or attempted rape, first-degree sexual abuse, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree assault, and possession of controlled substance from Clay County.

According to the Sedalia Democrat, Arbeiter pleaded guilty in the murder of Mandy Black in Dec. and to an attack on a neighbor in a Sedalia area trailer park.  The news agency reported the sentences came days after the 51st anniversary of his first murder charge in St. Louis when he was accused of the murder of 28-year-old Nancy Zanone, a married mother of two children during a burglary in 1963 and sentenced to life without parole.  His first sentence however, was overturned by the Supreme Court in Oct. 1966 and sent back to court because officers failed to take him directly to the juvenile court as the law required.

Arbeiter was pronounced dead at 9:54 p.m. Saturday at Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron of apparent natural causes.

Erosion shuts down Riverwalk

city of st joseph seal logoExperts are considering a detour along the St Joseph Riverwalk. Meanwhile the popular walk along the Missouri River was closed over the weekend.

Last week, city officials announced the attraction would be closed indefinitely because of river erosion. By the weekend, the entrances were blocked. A stretch of the sidewalk is at risk of collapsing into the Missouri River.

Officials are considering using a service road to steer foot traffic around a section of the trail worn away by high waters on the Missouri River.

Long term plans call for officials to dump rocks, or “riprap” into the river to shore up the shoreline.

Sunday night burglary and attempted burglary investigated

wpid137133-wpid-sjpd-patch1.jpgSaint Joseph police arrested a suspect in a residential break-in committed while officers were investigating an attempted burglary involving the same suspect.

Sergeant Brett Kelly says at about 10:30 Sunday night a man tried to break into a residence near 28th Street and 36 Highway.  Kelly says after the suspect left that residence he apparently tried his luck on another home nearby.  He woke up an elderly lady who ordered him out of her bedroom.  He left and she called police.

A short time later an alert citizen spotted a man who turned out to be the suspect and directed officers to his location.  The suspect was booked for investigation of burglary.
