Route M in southern Buchanan County is now closed, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation. A culvert on Route M is scheduled to be replaced next week between Nichols Road and SW 66th Road. Crews have been filling the area around the culvert with gravel, but rains are washing it out, necessitating closing the road earlier than previously scheduled.

With the current weather conditions, crews will not be able to begin work on replacing the culvert until next week. The road is closed now and will remain closed until 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014. Motorists are asked to use an alternate route and to not drive around barricades.

“When we close a route, it is for the safety of the traveling public, which remains our number one priority,” said Northwest District Engineer Don Wichern. “Crews tried to keep the road open as long as they could, but conditions made it necessary to close the road so motorists are not at risk.”

St. Joseph Police Department investigating shots fired into two homes

The St. Joseph Police Department is investigating shots fired into two homes Wednesday night.

According to Captain Jeff Wilson officers responded to the 3000 block of Kearnes Road around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after residents came home to find a window of their home shot out by a bullet.

Wilson said a short while later officers were called to the 1100 block of Magnolia Avenue to another window at a home struck by a bullet.

No one was struck and there were no injuries reported. Wilson said the shots fired appear to be random incidents at this point.

“We’re not seeing a pattern of a rash amount of these going on right now,” said Wilson. “But even an isolated incident is concerning.”

Anyone with information in connection with the incident is asked to contact the TIPS HOTLINE at (816) 238-TIPS.

Road closures expected due to heavy rains

With heavy rain forecasted across the state over the next few days, the Missouri Department of Transportation cautions motorists that some state routes are expected to close due to flooding.  The already saturated creeks and streams are expected to rise with flash flooding conditions across the state.

Current road closures are posted on the department’s Traveler Information Map, located at http://www.modot.org/. The majority of flooded roadways are expected on lettered and numbered routes with low traffic volumes.

“MoDOT crews are closely monitoring roadways and are prepared for more temporary closures as the rivers across the state continue to rise,” said MoDOT State Maintenance Engineer Beth Wright. “We encourage travelers to visit our Traveler Information Map before hitting the road to check the latest road conditions and closures.”

MoDOT offers the following driving tips that can help avoid delays and unsafe conditions during rainy weather:

•Slow down, use caution, and don’t use cruise control when driving in rain to avoid skidding and hydroplaning. Leave plenty of following distance.

• When windshield wipers are needed, turn on your headlights. It’s the law.

• Never move or drive around barricades placed on roadways due to high water. Barricades are a warning designed to protect you from an unsafe condition. You can put yourself at serious risk if you proceed into a flooded section of road.

• If a road is closed, find another route.

• If a road is covered in flood water but is not closed by a barricade, do NOT drive into the high water. Stop and turn around. Notify local police, the sheriff or the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

•”Turn Around – Don’t Drown” as highways become impassable.

Hundreds of area students check out My Success Event

More than 2700 high school students from Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas will make their way through the 2014 My Success Event to learn about career and education options for their future.

“This is the largest group that we’ve had,” said Mary Brown, St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce Programs Coordinator. “I think unfortunately this is the last year we’re going to be able to take on any new schools just because logistically we can’t handle anymore.”

The two day event kicked off Wednesday morning at Wyatt Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph.

“I’m just looking around to get some ideas about career opportunities,” said Natalie Eaton, Cameron High School Sophomore. “I think I want to work with animals but i’m not 100% sure yet.”

Students were able to stop by more than 70 booths set up by area businesses to learn about career options in St. Joseph and Northwest Missouri.  Students asked booth attendees many questions from the types of careers available with the company to job duties and educational requirements.

There were also booths from 14 area colleges and tech schools in attendance.

“Even though I’m only a Sophomore I want to get a head start,” said Shelby Palmer, Albany High School Sophomore. “I’m between two art schools.”

Albany High School Sophomore, Mickayla Woody said she thinks she knows what she wants to do but the event was still helpful.

“There’s agriculture and there’s animal science,” said Woody. “I want to be a Marine Biologist.  I really love the water and I really love animals and so I think that’s the perfect thing for me.”

Students were encouraged to talk with area employers and ask questions by receiving raffle tickets from booth workers which they submit to qualify to win prizes at the end of the day.

“The raffle tickets are two-fold to get them engaged with the businesses” said Brown. “The student doesn’t realize they’re learning in the process.  They are more interested in the raffle ticket because they want to earn the prizes but they’re learning about the businesses that are here in the area at the same time.”

Drivers urged to use alternate route as roadwork begins on 5th Ave. bridge

Two street maintenance and repair projects are currently in progress on 5th Avenue.

The first, a mill and overlay project, from 18th Street to St. Joseph Avenue, is expected to be complete by the end of the day Thursday, October 9, weather permitting.

The second project involves the bridge just to the east of St. Joseph Avenue. Traffic will be reduced to one lane during the repair of the bridge from 12th Street to 500 feet west. The one-lane traffic will be under signal and/or flag control for the duration of the work. It may be necessary
to, periodically, close this section of 5th Avenue for short durations. The lane closure will begin tomorrow (October 9) and work is expected to be complete by Friday, October 17, weather dependent.

Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route during the construction period to avoid the area. The suggested alternate route for westbound traffic is south on 12th Street, west on Grand Avenue, then north on St. Joseph Avenue. Eastbound traffic should go south on St. Joseph Avenue, east on Grand Avenue, then north on 12th Street. Parking will be restricted on 12th street between 5th Avenue and Grand Avenue until the repairs are completed.
