A St. Joseph man has been charged after a manhunt in northwest Missouri over the weekend spanning several counties.

43-year-old Jeffery Griffith of St. Joseph has been charged with felonies for Tampering with a Motor Vehicle and Resisting Arrest.

According to the Cameron Police Department authorities began investigating a report of a stolen Ford F-250 spotted outside Cameron city limits around 2:20 Saturday afternoon behind the Motel 6 at 1920 Bob Griffin. The vehicle had been reported stolen the day before near Faucett.

When officers arrived police found the vehicle pulling a stolen trailer and loaded with stolen 3-wheelers. When officers tried to make contact Griffith allegedly sped off in the vehicle northbound from the Motel.

Authorities said that’s when a chase began until Griffith existed just north of Kidder, Mo. and abandoned the vehicle to run into a wooded area.

Members of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol along with several other agencies from the area began searching the area and Sunday at around 4 p.m. Griffith surrendered to law enforcement and was taken into custody by the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department.

Police said Griffith also had warrants for his arrest from Andrew County for resisting arrest and one from Clay County for Non-Support.

Griffith is being held in the Daviess/DeKalb regional jail on $50,000 bond.

Science, technology, engineering and math will soon have a new home at Hillyard Technical Center.

St. Joseph School District board members, as well as officials, teachers and students with Hillyard helped break ground Friday on a new Advanced Science Research Center.

“This is very exciting for us because we have been approached by the school foundation here in St. Joe to support this fascinating project,” said Albrecht Kissel, Boehring Ingelheim Vetmedica President and CEO.

The add-on facility will include more than 8,150 square feet of space, secure entry and reception office, science laboratory and lap prep space, two classrooms, and an independent research area and lap prep space.  The total cost of the new facility is $1,627,800.

Kissel said Boehringer decided to contribute $250,000 to the project because the company is always trying to hire local.

“We employ about 900 people here in St. Joe and about 600 of them work in manufacturing and many of them need education in STEM education,” Kissel said. “We want to ideally hire locally, and the more people who are educated locally the more we can hire here.”

The project is anticipated to be completed in August of 2016.

Surveillance image released of vehicle wanted in assault investigation of Civilian Officer

Green LeSabre (1)The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department has released a photo from surveillance video footage of a vehicle used in a threat on a Civilian Officer.

According to the department, on Saturday Aug. 29 a Civilian worker with the Buchanan County Detention Center was in the parking lot of Little Caesars on Ashland when an individual in a vehicle pulled out what appeared to be a handgun, yelled the words ‘die pig die’ at her and fired the gun. A shell casing was recovered from the scene.

The female detention officer was not injured.

After reviewing video footage of the incident the sheriff’s department has released a photo of a mid-1990s Buick 4-door car.

Four individuals were in the vehicle at the time of the incident and the department said the weapon was fired from the rear passenger seat of the Buick,

“Our civilian employee pulled their vehicle into a parking space on the passenger side of the Buick. When our employee exited their vehicle is when this incident occurred,” said Cpl. Sarah Hardin with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department. “Our employee was taken completely by surprise and was shocked that the incident occurred. Our employee immediately entered Little Caesars for safety purposes.”

“Die Pig Die” yelled and shots fired at Buchanan County Detention Worker

Buchanan County Sheriff sealThe Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a civilian detention worker was assaulted earlier this week.

“Two Hispanic/Latino males approximately late teens early 20s pulled what appeared to be a handgun, yelled ‘die pig die’ and fired the weapon,” said Col. Bill Puett, Undersheriff. “We don’t know if it was a blank pistol or a real pistol but the employee wasn’t hit.”

Puett said the female employee was not injured.  He said she has worked with the Buchanan County Jail for many years.

“She has been here over 10-years,” Puett said.

She was not a sworn officer.  He said she just worked in the jail watching or observing inmates.

The assault took place over the weekend in a parking lot of a local business just off of Ashland Ave.  Puett said the employee was wearing a polo and tactical pants that are part of the jail uniform.

A description of the vehicle driven by the suspects is that of a late 60s early 70s 4-door dodge, green in color with a lot of rust on it.

Puett said all employees have been instructed to stay on their guard.

“We have instructed all our employees to be hyper-vigilant with awareness of their surroundings and what’s going on and the things they encounter, to be very cautious,” Puett said.  “We’ve broadcast this to the police department, highway patrol, others in the region so they’re aware.  We want everyone to be safe, to not be harmed.”

He is asking the public to report any information they may have on the incident.

“The public’s help is greatly appreciated.  If anybody saw or has heard anything about this we’d very much appreciate to have that information,” Puett said. “We understand that our community is supportive of law enforcement.  They don’t want nor will they tolerate this behavior.”

Sex Offender scam warning issued by sheriff’s department

Scam AlertThe Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a fake email notifying individuals of a Sex Offender moving into the neighborhood.

The department said an email has been circulating which notified individuals that a Sex Offender has moved to close proximity of their home and are directed to go to a specific website to learn more.

“We strongly suggest against opening this email or going to the link on that email,” said Sheriff Steve Cox. “May be a scam or infect your computer with a virus.”

The department said several area residents have reported receiving an email like this.

“There are literally hundreds or thousands of dangerous emails out daily but this one has a bit of a different twist which may lure people into getting more than they want,” Cox said.
