After six years of service to the St. Joseph community Salvation Army Captains Chuck and Dana Cook are moving to new quarters.

The Cooks have been stationed in St. Joseph since June of 2009. Capt. Chuck Cook said they came to the area from a Salvation Army based out of Pittsburg, Kan. where they had been stationed for three years prior.

“You’re only as good as the folks that support you and all you can do is support them and I hope that’s what we’ve done here,” Chuck said. “If we have to leave a legacy if anything I hope we leave a legacy of we’ve done what we could do.”

Chuck said when he and his wife Dana moved to the St. Joseph Salvation Army they made efforts to try and improve youth programming, took part in relocating the Salvation Army Thrift Store from the run-down location on 22nd street to its new location at 519 S. 5th Street and aided to improve and maintain shelter living conditions.

The Cooks have been reassigned to the Salvation Army in Springfield, Mo.  A Farewell Reception will be held Saturday, June 13 for the couple from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Salvation Army Community Center located at 602 Messanie St.

The public is invited.

LeeAnn Hobson, Administrative Assistant for the Salvation Army said new officers have already been assigned to the St. Joseph location.

“Their names are Major Abe and Major Ronda Tamanyo,” Hobson said. “Salvation Army terms move officers every few years.”

The incoming couple is moving to St. Joseph from Hastings, Neb. They will take over June, 28.

The public is invited to lend a hand in an effort to preserve the St. Joseph Riverfront Park.

A clean-up event held by Riverfront Rescue will be held Saturday, June 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Riverfront Park. Participants are asked to bring gloves, rakes, shovels, trimmers, and other items to help spruce up the park and surrounding area.

Riverfront Rescue coordinator Madison Davis previously told the St. Joseph Post he started the Facebook page Riverfront Rescue in March of 2014 in an effort to invited citizens who want to help maintain the park.

“I don’t know if you’ve been to Riverfront park in the last three to five years but right now unfortunately it’s basically a place for people to go and not just be there for a positive purpose,” said Davis. “We’re trying to bring light to the area and clean it back up in a positive light.”

Price Chopper approved by Planning Commission

Price_Chopper_LogoPrice Chopper is one step closer to opening its doors in St. Joseph.

Planning and Community Development Director, Clint Thompson said the Planning Commission approved plans for the future infrastructure of a 88,000 square foot Price Chopper to be built in the location of the old Plaza 8 Theater.

The commission voted unanimously on a vote of 8-0 Thursday with Chairman Todd Euler abstaining because of his ties as the co-owner of St. Joseph’s Apple Market stores.

Thompson said the approval allows the developer to present the cite plan that shows how the infrastructure will be in place and allow the city to review the overall concept of the project.

He said before the project is completed the developer will have to come back to get final approval.

However, Thompson said the community can expect to start to see demolition on the old Plaza 8 location sometime in the next several months.

“The new building will be more in-line with Anderson Ford and the strip mall,” Thompson said.

He said he expects the new facility to open sometime in mid-2016.

A St. Joseph teenager escaped serious injury Wednesday afternoon after running her bicycle into the side of a moving vehicle.

St. Joseph Police Officer Scott Vanover said the 15-year-old girl was riding her bike west on Corby St. just before 2 p.m. when she failed to stop at a stop sign and ran into the side of a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Harry Rowland who was southbound on 11th St.

The teen was thrown from her bicycle after hitting the side of the truck.  She was not wearing a helmet.

Vanover said she sustained only minor injuries.

“Minor scraps and abrasions to both knees, right shoulder, and left elbow,” Vanover said.

She was not taken to the hospital and no tickets were issued.

Vanover said it’s important for bicyclists to remember to follow the rules of the roadway.

“Bicyclists are supposed to follow the same rules of the road as cars,” he said. “Obey all posted stop signs, traffic signals, electronic signals and look before you cross the road.
