Got help paying for health care? Watch your mailbox

WASHINGTON (AP) — If you’re among the millions of consumers who got government subsidies for health insurance last year under President Barack Obama’s law, watch your mailbox.

The administration says it has started sending out tax reporting forms you’ll need to fill out for your 2014 return. They’re like W-2s for health care.

Called 1095-A, the forms are for people who got health insurance tax credits. They list how much the government paid each month to subsidize your premiums. You’ll need to make sure it’s right and report it to the IRS.

It’s the first time that Americans will experience the complex connections between the health care law and taxes. So there’s concern that some people may not realize the new forms are important, and that they do need to open that envelope.

Trout fishing in Kansas? Yes, in the winter

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 9.55.38 AMHUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Think of trout fishing and you aren’t likely to consider Kansas as a destination.

But the state offers trout fishing during the winter at several of its waterways. From Nov. 1 through April 15, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism stocks rainbow trout, which are cold-water fish that can’t survive the state’s summers.

Jeff Koch, a fisheries biologist with the wildlife agency, says the trout program is one of the most popular the department offers.

The Hutchinson News reports  the Dillon Nature Center is a hot spot for trout anglers near Hutchinson. Other stocking areas include the Webster Stilling Basin, the Cedar Bluff Stilling Basin, Lakewood Lake in Salina, Scott State Fishing Lake, Pratt Centennial Pond and Sedgwick County’s Vic’s Lake.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the age of technology and digital innovation has created enormous vulnerabilities for the U.S.

Obama is addressing online privacy issues at the Federal Trade Commission. He’s proposing legislation that would require companies to inform customers within 30 days if their data has been hacked.

Obama says the benefits of technology come with risks. He’s citing the recent hack on Sony as an example.

Obama says every state currently has its own policy on when companies must notify consumers of a breach. He wants a single, 30-day standard across the country. Obama says there ought to be baseline protections across industries.

The cybersecurity proposal comes as Obama seeks to call attention to issues he’ll highlight in his State of the Union address.

2 airlines were targets of attempt to steal customers’ miles

hackingDAVID KOENIG, AP Airlines Writer

DALLAS (AP) — Thieves with stolen usernames and passwords have broken into customer accounts at American and United airlines and in some cases booked free trips.

The airlines say the incidents happened in late December. American began notifying affected customers by email on Monday.

American says 10,000 accounts were affected and some have been frozen while the airline and customer set up new accounts. Spokeswoman Martha Thomas says the airline isn’t aware of anyone booking a free trip.

But at United, a spokesman says thieves booked trips or made mileage transactions on up to three dozen accounts.

Representatives from both airlines say nobody hacked their systems and that the thieves got usernames and passwords somewhere else, and tried to use them to log into American’s AAdvantage and United’s MileagePlus.

McCaskill not a candidate for Missouri governor

McCaskillKANSAS CITY (AP) – U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill says she won’t run for Missouri governor in 2016.

The Democrat announced her decision Monday on KCUR radio in Kansas City.

McCaskill’s decision clears the path for fellow Democrat and Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster, who already has been running for the state’s highest office.

Current Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon is barred by term limits from seeking re-election.

The only declared Republican candidate is former U.S. Attorney and House Speaker Catherine Hanaway, but Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich also has been considering the race. That could mean a potential primary battle for the GOP.

McCaskill ran for governor in 2004, defeating then-Gov. Bob Holden in a Democratic primary. She lost to Republican Matt Blunt in the general election but was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006.

Hallmark’s Crayola sorry after hackers make its Facebook page off-color

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 10.04.14 AMEASTON, Pa. (AP) — Crayola is apologizing after hackers filled its Facebook page with off-color content.

The Forks Township, Pennsylvania-based crayon and marker manufacturer regained control of the page late Sunday and removed the offending posts.

Instead of burnt sienna and cerulean blue, the page’s 2.4 million followers saw cartoon breasts and sophomoric sex jokes.

Crayola tweeted early Sunday evening that it was aware of the hack and “making every effort to stop the unauthorized posts.” A few hours later, it had restored the page to its usual family friendliness.

“Our sincere apologies to our Facebook community for the inappropriate and offensive posts you may have seen here,” the post said.

Crayola LLC is a subsidiary of Kansas City, Missouri-based Hallmark Cards Inc.
