The KHP reported they were both properly restrained at the time of the accident.

Justices: Can’t make employers cover contraception

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says corporations can hold religious objections that allow them to opt out of the new health law requirement that they cover contraceptives for women.
The justices’ 5-4 decision Monday is the first time that the high court has ruled that profit-seeking businesses can hold religious views under federal law. And it means the Obama administration must search for a different way of providing free contraception to women who are covered under objecting companies’ health insurance plans.
Contraception is among a range of preventive services that must be provided at no extra charge under the health care law that President Barack Obama signed in 2010 and the Supreme Court upheld two years later.

Kansas considering scenic overlook for Flint Hills

Screen Shot 2014-06-30 at 9.16.26 AMTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Turnpike Authority is considering building a scenic outlook along Interstate 35 to allow travelers to stop and appreciate the Flint Hills.

The Kansas City Star reports the turnpike authority is considering improvements to on and off ramps south of Emporia that currently serve cattle owners, who truck in their cattle to graze in the spring and then retrieve them in the fall.

If the project is successful, it would be the first scenic overlook on the turnpike.

Construction of the overlook is tentatively scheduled for spring 2015, although cost estimates and the design have not been determined.

The project also must be approved by the turnpike authority’s board.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say some people had to be rescued from their vehicles after flash flooding hit southeast Missouri, while possible tornadoes left wind damage in the northwest corner of the state.

The National Weather Service says 3 inches of rain fell in an hour Sunday afternoon around Fremont in Carter County, catching some people in their vehicles on U.S. 60. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a few people also had to be evacuated from their homes in the region. No serious injuries were reported.

The highway was closed for about three hours and some county roads are underwater.

The weather service says it received reports of possible tornadoes Sunday evening in Nodaway, Buchanan and Mercer counties. The storms left trees and power lines down, with damage to some outbuildings.

Mo. man admits he killed girlfriend

SPRINGFIELD (AP) – A Springfield man will be sentenced in October for the shooting death of his girlfriend, which he at first claimed was an accident.

Twenty-eight-year-old Darrell Smith pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, 23-year-old Kimberly Walker. Sentencing was scheduled for Oct. 23.

Smith originally pleaded not guilty and claimed a gun accidentally went off while the couple was sitting on the couch last Dec. 30. He said he thought the gun wasn’t loaded. Walker died the next day.

The medical examiner and investigators said evidence showed that version of events wasn’t possible.

Kansas judge taking time joining federal bench

Nancy Moritz

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas Supreme Court justice won’t be taking her seat on the federal appeals court until late July because of pending Kansas cases.

Justice Nancy Moritz’s appointment to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals was confirmed in May.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the 84 days between Moritz’s confirmation and move to the appeals courts is unprecedented. The average amount of time between confirmation commission has been about three days for the 42 other justices appointed since 1929.

A spokeswoman for the Kansas Judiciary says Moritz wants to finish her business in Kansas, which includes three death penalty cases.

Judicial selection expert Russell Wheeler of the Brookings Institute says the 10th Circuit’s relatively light caseload makes it easier for Moritz to wait before assuming her new post.

CHICAGO (AP) — Passengers say a United Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Kansas after an evacuation slide deployed during the flight, filling part of the cabin.

Mike Schroeder says he was flying from Chicago to Orange County, California, late Sunday when he heard a hiss and pop. He says he turned around and saw the plane’s emergency evacuation slide inflating inside the plane.

Schroeder says the pilot announced to passengers that they would be landing at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport. He says passengers remained calm and took pictures of the inflated slide with their phones.

Schroder says that after landing the pilot looked at the slide and said he had never seen that happen before.

United Airlines representatives did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment early Monday.

Kansas officials await June revenue figures

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Department of Revenue is preparing to release figures for June’s tax collections, with officials hoping recent shortfalls have subsided.

Revenues in April and May fell $310 million short of expectations, raising questions about whether personal income tax cuts championed by Gov. Sam Brownback were more generous than advertised and threaten to create a budget shortfall.

June’s figures will be released Monday afternoon. Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan already has said they’re expected to be $10 million to $20 million below expectations.

Brownback’s administration has attributed the shortfalls to uncertainty created by disputes in Washington over federal spending and tax policies that affected how investors claimed capital gains.

Democrats blame the lower collections on Brownback’s tax cuts in 2012 and 2013.

Teen Drowns in KC Park Pond

KANSAS CITY (AP) – A teenage boy is dead after drowning while swimming with three other boys in a pond at a Kansas City Park.

WDAF-TV reports the drowning at Kessler Park was reported just after 7 a.m. Sunday. Kansas City Police Chief Darryl Forte tweeted around 11 a.m. that the boy’s body had been recovered.

Fire officials say the teens were swimming in the pond when their friend went under and never came up. Divers began searching the murky water for the boy but soon changed the rescue effort to a recovery attempt.

It took divers from the Lee’s Summit underwater rescue team about two hours to find the victim in water 10 to 12 feet deep.

The victim has not been identified.
