KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A burglary suspect burglar broke his leg while trying to flee from police after a homeowner found him inside a western Missouri residence.

WDAF-TV reports the man was discovered around 11 a.m. Thursday inside a Freeman home in Cass County.

Police say the suspect pulled over and broke his leg at some point after jumping out of the still-moving vehicle and climbing a median to escape. His car crashed into a Cass County deputy’s vehicle.

Neither the suspect’s name nor those of the other man and two women in his vehicle have been released.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chelsea Clinton says she and her husband are expecting their first child later this year.

The daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced at a Clinton Foundation event in New York that she and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, are “very excited” to be having their first child later this year.

The former first lady says she’s “really excited” about becoming a grandmother and it makes the work of empowering future generations even more important.

The 34-year-old vice chairman of her family’s foundation made the announcement at the end of an event on empowering young women.

Chelsea Clinton said last year in a magazine interview that she hoped 2014 would be “the year of the baby.”

NEW YORK (AP) — The government’s latest report card on food poisoning is out, and it has some good news: a drop in illnesses from salmonella.

Last year, salmonella cases fell 9 percent, compared to the previous three years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that’s the largest drop in a decade.

But officials were cautious about making too much of it. Last year was compared to a time period that included a large salmonella outbreak tied to eggs.

Overall, there wasn’t much change. The CDC report found no significant change in most kinds of food poisoning. There was a spike in illnesses caused by a bacteria found in raw shellfish like oysters, but the number of cases was still relatively small.

DENVER (AP) — A judge in Colorado who will play a pivotal role deciding whether gays should be allowed to wed in the United States sharply questioned whether Oklahoma can legally prevent the marriages.

Jerome Holmes is one of three judges on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals who is hearing arguments from attorneys Thursday about the state’s gay marriage ban. A lower court overturned the ban.

Holmes indicated during the hearing that states cannot define marriage in a way that would “trample constitutional rights.”

His line of questioning could be good news for gay marriage advocates because Holmes is viewed as the swing vote on the panel.

Whatever the 10th Circuit panel rules will inevitably be appealed. Attorneys expect the U.S. Supreme Court to have the final word on gay marriage.

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) – The Missouri House and Senate have each passed bills that would prevent people younger than 18 from purchasing electronic cigarettes.

But the legislation passed on Thursday would also exempt those products from the state’s tobacco taxes, which opponents say would allow the nicotine products to be sold with fewer restrictions.

Supporters say taxing the products would prevent the measure from passing the Republican-led Legislature. They argued that failing to pass a bill would mean children could continue buying the e-cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices used to heat a liquid nicotine solution and create vapor that is inhaled.

The House voted 129-19 to send its bill to the Senate, where senators voted 27-4 in favor of their version. Both chambers must pass identical legislation by mid-May.

MARIONVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A small-town Missouri mayor’s public support of a Kansas shooting suspect has led to the resignation of one of his elected colleagues.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder says all Americans are standing with the mourners of three people killed at Jewish community sites in suburban Kansas City.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and several religious leaders also attended the service Thursday at the Jewish Community Center.

Holder told the overflow crowd of more than 1,000 that every alleged hate crime, no matter the intended target, is an affront to the nation.

Avowed white supremacist Frazier Glenn Cross is charged with capital murder and premeditated first-degree murder in the killings Sunday of Dr. William Lewis Corporon and his grandson, Reat Griffin Underwood, outside the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City.

Cross is also accused of killing Terri LaManno at a nearby Jewish retirement complex. Her funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

PITTSBURG-Two Missouri drivers were involved in an accident in a Crawford County Kansas accident on Thursday morning.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1989 Honda Civic driven by Emily A. Adams, 25, Lamar, Mo was westbound on K126, passing a long line of cars and struck a 2004 Mini Cooper making a left turn onto county road 260^th Ave.

Adams and the driver of the Mini Cooper, David Redick, 32, Carthage were transported to Via Christi in Pittsburg.

The KHP reported both drivers were properly restrained.

SHELL KNOB, Mo. (AP) — An international Christian ministry says it is planning a $21.5 million expansion of its facilities on Table Rock Lake in southwest Missouri.

Young Life, based in Colorado Springs, Colo., said Wednesday its new development near Lampe will allow the organization and other groups to schedule events beyond the traditional summer camps.

The Springfield News-Leader reports the organization bought 276 acres on the lake in 2000 for $2.5 million. A ground-breaking for the expansion is planned for Tuesday.

The expansion will add an office, dining hall, pool and bath house, two dormitories and a covered basketball court. Young Life estimates it will serve 200 students and leaders a week beginning in June 2015.

A master plan includes a third phase adding 10 more buildings, although no timeline has been set.
