WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder says Justice Department prosecutors will investigate whether federal hate crimes were committed in the Kansas shootings that killed three people over the weekend.

In a statement Monday, Holder said he has instructed the department to provide all available support to state and local authorities to determine whether the shootings outside Kansas City involved federal hate crimes law.

The attorney general says the senseless acts of violence at two Jewish facilities are all the more heartbreaking because they were carried out on the eve of Passover.

Holder says the Justice Department will do everything in its power to ensure justice is served in the case on behalf of the victims and their families.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is remembering those killed at a Jewish community center and retirement complex, saying no one should have to worry about their security while gathering with their fellow believers.

Obama is speaking at an Easter prayer breakfast at the White House. He says the fact that Sunday’s attack in Kansas came as Jews prepare to celebrate Passover and Christians prepare for Easter makes the tragedy “all the more painful.”

The man accused of killing three people Sunday is a well-known white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader who was once the subject of a nationwide manhunt.

The president also recalled his meeting at the Vatican last month with Pope Francis. He says the pope has inspired people around the world with his “simple, yet profound” actions.

AURORA, Mo. (AP) — There was no answer at the last known address for a man suspected in the shooting deaths of three people at a Kansas Jewish community center and retirement complex.

Frazier Glenn Cross was booked into the Johnson County, Kan., jail on a preliminary charge of first-degree murder after the attacks Sunday in Overland Park.

On Monday, an Associated Press reporter knocked on the door of his last known address outside the small southwest Missouri town of Aurora.

No one answered at the small, single-story house, which was bordered on three sides by barbed-wire fences. Outside the home, a red Chevrolet pickup bore two Confederate flag stickers.

Hate- and terror-monitoring groups say Cross is a known anti-Semite who is active with groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — A woman who lost her father and son to shootings at a Jewish community center says she knows they are in heaven together.

Mindy Corporon is the mother of 14-year-old Reat Griffin Underwood and the daughter of William Corporon, who died outside the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park Sunday. William Corporon took his grandson to the center to audition for a contest.

Video shown on local media sites show Mindy Corporon speaking calmly a vigil Sunday night while others are heard sobbing. She said she arrived at the shooting scene before police and ambulances and “knew immediately that they were in heaven.” She vowed that her family would continue living life to the fullest.

The identity of a third victim shot at a retirement complex has not been released.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — A Johnson County jail official says the man accused of killing three people outside of Jewish sites near Kansas City is Frazier Glenn Cross.

The official confirmed that Cross is the suspect in Sunday’s attacks in Overland Park. He spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Public records show that the 73-year-old Cross also goes by the last name Miller. The Southern Poverty Law Center says he has long been an outspoken white supremacist and was once a “grand dragon” of the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

The group reports on its website that it spoke to Miller’s wife, Marge, by phone Sunday and she said police told her that her husband had been arrested in Sunday’s attacks.

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) – Missouri senators are pausing to remember former colleagues who have died during the past several decades.

The Senate was holding a memorial service Monday to commemorate 60 former state senators who passed away since May 1987.

The Senate memorial service used to be a biennual event held around Memorial Day. But the tradition faded away after the state Constitution was amended to change the length of Missouri’s annual legislative sessions, and senators no longer were in session around Memorial Day.

This year’s ceremony will include roses and candles for each deceased senator as well as several musical selections, including a duet of “Amazing Grace” sung by a current and former senator.

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) – A physician regarded as the father of osteopathic medicine will be inducted this week into the Hall of Famous Missourians in the state Capitol.

Andrew Taylor Still founded the American School of Osteopathy, now called A.T. Still University, in Kirksville in 1892.

Officials said Still was the leading vote-getter in a public selection process for additions to the hall. Members of his family and people involved in osteopathic medicine plan to attend Wednesday’s induction ceremony.

The Hall of Famous Missourians is a collection of bronze busts that generally has honored people chosen by the House speaker.

Four new people were selected this past December for the hall. Half were chosen through a public nomination and voting process. Induction ceremonies have not been announced for the others.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is offering condolences to the families of those killed in Sunday’s shootings outside a Jewish community center and a retirement village in Kansas.

Obama says he has asked his White House team to make sure law enforcement authorities have “the necessary resources to support the ongoing investigation.” He is pledging the full support of the federal government during what he called “this trying time.”

Two men were killed Sunday when a man in his 70s fired shots behind the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City in Overland Park, Kan. The gunman then fled and opened fire at nearby Village Shalom, killing a woman, before being arrested near an elementary school.

Obama says reports of the shootings were “heartbreaking.”
