A teenage driver was seriously injured in a Monday night crash in Pettis County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports a 2006 Toyota driven by Jonathan L. Perry, 18, Sedalia was southbound on Highway U north of Highway V. The vehicle’s tire went off the right side of the road.

The driver overcorrected and went into the opposing lane. The driver overcorrected again and the vehicle left the right side of the road. The vehicle struck a ditch, overturned, struck a fence and came to rest in a field.

Life Flight transported Perry to Columbia University Hospital.

The MSHP reported Perry was properly restrained.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri schools could get state money for training on how to respond to shooting incidents.

A provision added to Missouri’s proposed budget by Sen. Kurt Schaefer would provide $750,000 for what he describes as “school safety and active shooter response training.”

Schaefer is a Republican from Columbia who is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The panel agreed Monday to add the money to the budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

The state’s roughly $26 billion budget still must be considered by the full Senate. The House passed a different version last month. A final budget plan must be negotiated and sent to Gov. Jay Nixon by May 9.

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) – Missouri senators have approved a to-do list of more than 300 items that could be funded through a bonding proposal.

The projects are detailed in a resolution passed Monday by a 26-4 vote. The bonding is authorized under a separate bill passed last week by the Senate.

Both measures now go to the House for consideration.

The plan would allot $200 million for a new mental health hospital in Fulton. An additional $400 million of bonds would be split among state facilities and public colleges and universities.

The bonds generally would fund maintenance and repairs that were put off when state revenues dipped during the recession.

State Office of Administration Commissioner Doug Nelson said Monday that some of the maintenance projects now are occurring, even without the bond funds.

KANSAS CITY (AP) – A former suburban Kansas City woman now living in Texas is going to prison for 18 months for a $158,000 tax fraud scheme.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says 35-year-old Kelsey Jones must also repay the federal government nearly $103,000 under the sentence she received Monday.

Jones is a former Grandview resident now living in Houston. She pleaded guilty last year to filing a false claim for a federal tax refund.

Jones admitted filing 36 false tax returns for herself and others from February 2009 to January 2011 claiming $158,000 in refunds. Prosecutors said she recruited people to file individual federal returns but submitted them with false and inflated income and revenue information.

Prosecutors said Jones also had about $17,000 in undeserved refunds deposited directly into her own bank account.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri House member is facing two charges of driving while intoxicated stemming from arrests in the capital city.

Democratic Rep. Steve Hodges, of East Prairie, was charged Friday for two separate events, one that occurred last week.

Hodges was also charged last week for a February arrest in Jefferson City.

Hodges did not immediately return a call to his cellphone seeking comment Monday, and an attorney was not listed on online court records. He was first elected to the House in 2006.

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) – Missouri’s public universities and community colleges could get a 5 percent funding increase under a budget plan embraced by a Senate committee.

The plan approved Monday by the Senate Appropriations Committee would provide a more than $43 million funding increase to higher education institutions.

Gov. Jay Nixon had proposed increases of 5 percent for universities and 4 percent increase for community colleges.

The House had approved a 3 percent increase for higher education institutions. Part of that would have been dependent on state revenues exceeding legislative projections and instead meeting Nixon’s more optimistic forecast.

All of the proposals would distribute the increased funding based on whether institutions meet performance criteria.

The House and Senate must settle their budget differences by early May.

JOPLIN (AP) – A judge has taken under advisement a change of venue request from the suspect in the shooting death of Missouri Southern University assistant football coach Derek Moore.

Jasper County Circuit Judge Gayle Crane on Monday also denied a request for a bond reduction for 40-year-old Jeffrey Bruner, who is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in Moore’s death.

Moore was killed last year near a theater in Joplin, where he had seen a movie with Bruner’s estranged wife.

The Joplin Globe reports Bruner’s attorney claimed pretrial publicity made it impossible for Crane to receive a fair trial in Jasper County.

Crane ruled Bruner will continue to be held on $1 million bond.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City police say 13 shootings aimed at drivers on area highways since March 8 might be connected.

Three people were injured in the shootings.

A driver was shot in the leg Sunday night near Interstate 435 and Interstate 470 in Kansas City, and another shooting happened downtown earlier that day.

The Kansas City Star reports 10 of the shootings happened in the city, while single shootings also have occurred in Leawood, Kan., Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit.

Police don’t have evidence linking the shootings, but say the frequency, geographic area and time of the shootings indicate many of them could be connected. They believe the gunman is traveling in a vehicle.

Most of the shootings have occurred at night in an area known as the Grandview Triangle.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling nearly 435,000 cars to fix rusting frame parts or faulty seats.

The biggest of the two recalls covers nearly 386,000 Ford Escapes from the 2001 through 2004 model years. Ford says the subframes can rust, allowing a control arm to separate and hamper steering control. Ford is aware of one crash but no injuries linked to the problem.

The SUVs were originally sold or registered in 20 states and Washington, D.C., where salt is used to clear snow and ice from roads. Seven Canadian provinces also are included.

Dealers will install a reinforcement brace.

The second recall covers 49,000 Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ, Ford Escape and C-MAX vehicles from 2013 and 2014. Dealers will replace seat back frames that weren’t welded properly.
