Auditors: UMKC business school submitted false data

UMKCKANSAS CITY (AP) – A newly released report finds that the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s business school knowingly submitted false data when applying for rankings and awards from national organizations.

The Kansas City Star reports that the University of Missouri System released the findings Friday. The international accounting firm that conducted the review also found no reason to believe rankings were undeserved, even after accounting for misinformation.

The university system’s Board of Curators commissioned the audit on July 31. Gov. Jay Nixon had sought the review after The Star conducted an investigation into the rankings, which became the focus of an advertising campaign.

The Bloch School’s current dean, David Donnelly, has appointed a special faculty committee to oversee future rankings data submissions.

DUI-2BILL DRAPER, Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court has reversed the drunken driving conviction of a Wichita man who was asked to take a breath test after failing a common field sobriety test that has been determined inadmissible in court.

William Molitor was stopped in February 2009 after leaving a Wichita bar and failing to use his turn signal. Officer Jeremy Diaz says Molitor struck the curb with his tire and had bloodshot eyes. There also was a strong odor of alcohol coming from his vehicle.

But Molitor had no problem producing requested documents or getting out of his vehicle. Diaz says he asked Molitor to take a breath test after he failed the horizontal gaze test.

The state Supreme Court ruled Friday that the gaze test wasn’t evidence that Molitor was impaired.

Mo. Man Indicted for Shooting at Airplane

CourtSPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Tammy Dickinson, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced in a media release on Friday that a Miller, Mo., man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for shooting at an airplane.

David Leroy Dickenson, 38, of Miller, was charged in an indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury in Springfield, Mo., on Jan. 20, 2015. That indictment was unsealed and made public following Dickenson’s arrest and initial court appearance. Dickenson remains in federal custody pending the court’s ruling on a detention motion.

The federal indictment alleges that Dickenson attempted to set fire to, damage, destroy, disable and wreck a 1997 S2R 510 Thrush aircraft on Dec. 3, 2014. Dickenson allegedly shot a firearm at an aircraft engaged in crop dusting then attempted to dispose of the firearm to prevent its discovery by law enforcement.
