WATCH Replay: Trump returns to Missouri to seal deal on tax plan

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump’s speech promoting the Republican tax plan (all times local):

2:40 p.m.

President Donald Trump claims the Republican tax plan is going to cost him “a fortune.” Watch his comments here.

Trump is speaking at an event promoting the legislation in St. Charles, Mo. He is providing no evidence to support his claim, insisting, “Believe me.”

Trump has repeatedly declined to release his tax returns — something every other modern president has done.

Trump is trying to rebut independent analyses showing that many wealthy individuals would receive a tax break under the proposal, saying his rich associates have called him to complain about the plan.

Responding to Democratic charges that the bill would mostly benefit the rich, Trump says, “If it is, my friends don’t know about it.”

2:30 p.m.

President Donald Trump’s visit to Missouri may be less about winning the support of Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill than boosting her opponent.

Trump, who called on McCaskill to support the bill during his tax reform event in St. Charles, Mo., is lending his support to Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley’s bid to unseat the Democratic lawmaker.

Trump is recognizing Hawley from the stage, saying, “He’s going to be a great senator.”

McCaskill voted against the GOP proposal in committee earlier this month, and is expected to vote against it when the full Senate takes up the measure.

Hawley greeted Trump at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, and hitched a ride with the president to his event, where Trump is plugging the Republican tax reform effort.

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) – A little over 100 protesters gathered outside a suburban St. Louis convention center where President Donald Trump will speak on tax reform Wednesday afternoon.

The president is scheduled to speak at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Charles convention center. About 1,000 invited guests will attend.

Outside, protesters chanted slogans such as “this is what democracy looks like” hours before the speech. The Frontline protest group that has been active since a former Sr. Louis police officer was acquitted in the death of a black suspect in September is urging demonstrators to show up.

A couple dozen Trump supporters stood nearby with signs, including one that read “promises made, promises kept.”

The appearance by the president comes as the Senate is expected to vote this week on a tax reform plan.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will return to Missouri on Wednesday as he tries to push the Republican tax plan across the finish line.

Trump is expected to once again emphasize the plan’s benefits for middle-income Americans, small business owners and workers in the St. Louis suburbs. Critics say the House and Senate plans will disproportionately help the wealthy and corporations.

It’s his second trip to the state to sell his plan.

Senior administration officials briefing reporters ahead of the visit said Trump is expected to mention Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, a top Republican target in next year’s midterm elections in his remarks. Trump in August said that that if McCaskill didn’t support his plan, voters should push her out of office.

Extension allows Missourians to continue to fly with existing IDs

File Photo

(Missourinet) – Fourth District Republican Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler announced on Twitter Tuesday morning that Missouri has been granted an extension to comply with federal standards for government issued IDs.

According to Hartzler, Missouri driver’s licenses will be counted as compliant for federal security checkpoints, including at airports, through October 2018. She said she was happy to support the extension along with the rest of the Missouri House delegation in a letter to the Department of Homeland Security last summer.

Missouri has received several extensions of the law over the years because the state legislature failed to move forward on the issue. In 2016, the federal government notified the state that no more extensions would be granted.

A small coalition of legislators, primarily Republicans, have protested against the federal law over storage of personal information in a database.

State Senator Ryan Silvey, R-Kansas City, sponsored a bill signed into law this year that lets Missourians choose whether they want a federal compliant or non-compliant driver’s license.

At the time, he said he expected the Missouri Department of Revenue, which is overseeing implementation of the law, to begin issuing compliant IDs in 6 to 18 months.

Silvey also said he thought the Revenue Department would ask the federal government for an extension of the January 2018 deadline to come into compliance.

Stricter ID requirements are tied to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and were recommended by the 9/11 Commission. The federal REAL ID Act, which was passed in 2005, requires more stringent identification standards for homeland security and immigration purposes.

Stiffer security standards are already in place at many federal facilities and military bases, and some Missourians have had to use a non-compliant ID with additional identification, such as a birth certificate or Social Security card, to gain access.

“Giving Tuesday” encourages charitable spirit around the world

After Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, a day focused on charitable giving.

Youth Alliance is one nonprofit organization in the St. Joseph community. Youth Alliance Executive Director Robin Hammond said Giving Tuesday is a national day of giving.

“It’s a great way to remember nonprofits in the community and throughout the nation and to send a gift that kind of shows that you support the work that they do and that you value the work that they do in the community,” Hammond said.

Hammond said on Giving Tuesday, community members can support Youth Alliance programs such as Circle of Parents.

“It’s a group that has been meeting at Youth Alliance for many years and we don’t have any ongoing funding for that and we’re reaching out into the community to ask people to give to us and one avenue is through Giving Tuesday,” Hammond said. “Circle of Parents is really a support group. It’s a way for parents who maybe are isolated to come together and build relationships with other parents. It gives them an opportunity to bounce ideas off of each other. We usually have an educational component at each of the meetings. They are parent led and parent planned.”

Hammond said Youth Alliance also focuses on youth volunteerism through programs such as Youth Volunteer Corps which works with youth 11-18 engaging them in volunteer service in the community.

Trump to speak in Missouri Wednesday

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) – President Donald Trump is returning to Missouri for the second time in three months.

The White House says Trump will speak Wednesday in St. Charles.

The speech comes as Trump and other Republican leaders seek to pass tax overhaul legislation by the end of the year. The House recently passed a $1.5 trillion bill and Senate GOP leaders hope to push their bill through this week. The package blends a sharp reduction in top corporate and business tax rates with more modest relief for individuals.

Trump also discussed the need for tax reform in an August speech in the southwest Missouri town of Springfield.
