Deadline nears to apply for Leadership NW Missouri class of 2019

ST. JOSEPH- Leadership Northwest Missouri is looking for the right men and women to fill its 2019 class, promising those who join an experience they’ll never forget. Eight days over a seven-month period is the commitment, but the results are worth so much more. The deadline to apply is November 1, 2018.

Often, seminars offer tips on leadership and networking. But Leadership Northwest Missouri is different. It provides a localized experience, offering leadership training, education on hot topics in the region, and access to a well-connected network of contacts. Here is what some of the 2018 class participants had to say about their experience:

“I had heard that the program was a great opportunity to network and build leadership skills but that doesn’t come close to describing the experience that I had building such strong, lasting friendships with a wonderful group of leaders and learning so in-depth about myself as a leader and a person. Truly an amazing experience!”
Austin Hibler, Hamilton/Caldwell County

“Leadership NWMO was better than I could have ever imagined. The time spent making connections with other leaders from the area and finding ways to improve myself were priceless.”
Ashley Bugbee, Bethany/Harrison County

“The experience was better than I ever could have imagined. Not only did we learn how to become a more effective leader, we learned more about our leading style and made some great friends along the way. Going forward, I have more confidence in my ability to lead due to this program.”
Coby Keyes, Savannah/Andrew County

“I am a better facilitator and understand how to manage individuals better. I am a better coach to help other managers through difficult situations. I am more comfortable stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things.”
Kari Corbin, Hamilton/Caldwell County

“LNWMO was a great opportunity to stretch and grow as a leader. The networking and friendship building with the region’s leaders, including Deb Powers and Dr. Tim Crowley, made every session a day that I looked forward to. Wish I had this opportunity years ago. Thanks LNWMO!”
Nathan Jones, Cameron/Clinton County

“My experience far exceeded my expectations. I learned more about myself and developed approaches to leading that I had not thought about prior to the course. I am very grateful for the support and network that was developed during those months together and really look forward to continuing to work with the program.”
Laura McFadden, Liberty/Clay County

“I joined this leadership program at the recommendation of several of my friends. I knew that I would learn and grow, but I did not expect to gain a group of lifelong friends or to learn so much about myself as both an individual and as a leader. It has been a phenomenal experience!”
Jessica Trussell, Chillicothe/Livingston County

“I applied for Leadership NW two weeks after starting a new job. Thankfully I was accepted and the timing was perfect. Having been in a different career for 17 years prior, Leadership NW strengthened my skills, resolve and courage to continue down a new career path. All the amazing people I met along the way was an extra bonus.”
Alicia Endicott, Gallatin/Daviess County

The 2019 class will begin with a two-day retreat at Conception Abbey, January 23 and 24, led by Tim Crowley, Ph.D., a national speaker on personal and professional development. Day-long monthly classes will follow in various communities throughout our 19-county region, (Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Caldwell, Carroll, Clay, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Holt, Linn, Livingston, Mercer, Nodaway, Sullivan and Worth), with the class graduation scheduled for July 18.

Class participants will come away with a new outlook on the workplace, enhanced leadership skills, hands-on team building exercises, communication and motivational skills, and so much more. To create an effective experience, Leadership Northwest Missouri must limit the number of class participants. The deadline to apply is November 1.

Program for parents of new drivers to be held in Chillicothe

A program coming to Chillicothe next week aims to reduce new driver crashes by increasing parental awareness and enforcement of Missouri’s GDL law.

Deana Dothage is Health Educator for the University of Missouri School of Medicine’s Dept. of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the director of First Impact.

Dothage said First Impact is a parent education program for parents of teen drivers who are at the pre-permit, permit, new or independent driver level.

“What we are teaching parents is about Missouri’s Graduated Drivers License (GDL) law and that comes with some rules and restrictions at three different levels of driving,” Dothage said. “We also talk to parents about strategies that they can work with their teens to overcome the risks that teen drivers face. As an example – drowsy driving, speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving – we go into some  detail about each of those risks and how parents can monitor and enforce those rules with their teen drivers.”

Dothage said teens ages 15 to 19 have the highest crash risk of any age group on the road.

“Teens are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash. Risk is highest in the first 30 to 90 days of independent driving, so we believe by educating parents about this law, research shows it reduces teen fatalities 20 to 40 percent and that is definitely our goal is to reduce fatalities and injuries with teen-involved crashes.”

The First Impact program coming to Chillicothe next week will be a 90-minute program featuring a short video and Dothage, along with Chief Deputy Michael Claypole with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, will be speaking.

Dothage said teen drivers are welcome to attend the program with their parents or guardians.

“We love the teen drivers to come, because what we find is when they’re hearing this information from just their parents, they may not absorb it as well as when they’re hearing it from two other professional safety speakers,” Dothage said.

The First Impact program will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Chillicothe High School in the Performing Arts Center.
